SUMMARY:World Car Free Day
DESCRIPTION:Launched in 1996\, World Car-Free Day is celebrated in over 1\,500 cities around the world by encouraging sustainable commuting. Minneapolis joined the celebration in 2016 when nearly 1\,800 downtown commuters pledged to go “car-free” for a day\, and improve their commute. With a little transportation coaching\, commuters kept their cars at home and used transit\, bicycled\, carpooled\, walked\, or teleworked. \nMinneapolis celebrates World Car-Free Day 2018 on Friday\, September 21st. Move Minneapolis demonstrates just how easy\, inexpensive and fast car-free commuting can be. Commuters can enter to win a bicycle by sharing their commuting story.  Employers can vie for the “Best Car-Free Workplace” award. \nMORE INFORMATION

SUMMARY:Welcoming Week Celebration at The Commons
DESCRIPTION:The City of Minneapolis and community partners are hosting a Welcoming Week celebration Friday\, Sept. 21 at The Commons. Welcoming Week is a national celebration focused on creating meaningful opportunities for community members\, whether immigrant\, refugee or native-born\, to come together\, learn from one another and demonstrate that we are stronger when we are a welcoming community. \nThis year’s Welcoming Week celebration is organized in partnership with the artists behind Carry-on Homes\, an interactive public art installation temporarily at The Commons focused on immigrants and immigration stories. The event will feature live performances by several artists and participation by organizations including the YMCA\, Green Card Voices\, CAPI\, Greater MSP\, Iraqi and American Reconciliation Project\, and the International Institute of Minnesota\, food trucks\, soccer\, voter registration information and more. \nArtists include traditional dancers from the Thai Art and Cultural Group from Wat Promwachirayan in collaboration with Asian Media Access\, spoken-word artists Ifrah Mansour and Bryan Thao Worra\, performance artist La Curandera (Xochi de la Luna) and dancers from the Somali Museum of Minnesota among many others. \nSeveral City departments will also be represented at the event\, and attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about the City’s new Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs\, which advises City leaders on immigration issues and connects community members with critical resources\, including legal service providers. \nThe City of Minneapolis is a proud member of Welcoming America’s network of Welcoming Cities and Counties\, a symbol of its commitment toward immigrants\, refugees and all residents. In 2017\, there were more than 700 Welcoming Week events across the country.

SUMMARY:ARTCRANK 2018
DESCRIPTION:ARTCRANK’s 2018 Minneapolis show will take place on Saturday\, October 13 at IDS Center. Staging a show in one of the most iconic buildings in Minneapolis is a far cry from our DIY bike shop roots\, but one thing remains the same: Affordable\, bike-inspired poster art created by local artists. This year’s edition of ARTCRANK features new bike-inspired posters created by more than 40 artists from around the Twin Cities. \nFor the fourth consecutive year\, ARTCRANK is teaming up with Fulton Brewing to provide adult refreshments and benefit a local nonprofit organization. A portion of proceeds from beer sales will benefit the Minnesota Cycling Federation and its programs that introduce kids to the sport of cycling\, let them try out racing for the first time\, and learn how to ride like pros. \nARTCRANK is also partnering with IDS Center — which is donating the space for the event — and the mpls downtown council to create a showcase of all the ways that cycling is transforming the downtown neighborhood\, from commuting to shopping to sightseeing. Show attendees will be encouraged to take advantage of the revamped\, Nicollet to arrive by bike\, with free valet bike parking near IDS Center’s Nicollet entrance provided by the Cultural Wellness Center’s My Bike Project\, another longtime ARTCRANK partner. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTISTS\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re proud to represent and support the work of these incredibly talented local artists. \nAdam Turman // Aleta Perez // Allan Peters // Amy Jo // Andria Chinander // Andy Wood // Anne Ulku // Brent Gale // Brian Geihl // Brooke Ekelund // Bruce Doscher // Courtney Thomas // Dana Kingery // Danielle Aba-Onu // David Schwen // Ellen Schofield // Erica Mathern // Erik T.
