SUMMARY:Hewing's "Studio 54" Halloween
DESCRIPTION:In 1977\, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager opened a night club that would make history. Launched at the peak of the disco era\, Studio 54 became world famous for its decadent dance parties\, its exclusive celebrity guest list\, and famously unpredictable and harsh door policy. Getting in was like winning the lottery. Even big stars were often turned away. But there were some notable regulars like Cher\, Liza Minnelli\, Andy Warhol\, Richard Gere\, Debbie Harry\, Michael Jackson\, Elizabeth Taylor\, and Bianca Jagger. Known for its over-the-top theatrical stage shows\, wild patrons dressed in outlandish costumes – or nothing at all — and the glittery debauchery that attracted the city’s eccentric and elite\, Studio 54 burned like a comet for only three short years.\n\nOn Saturday night\, October 30th\, we’ll step into Studio 54’s spectacular and salacious past. Join us as we transform our ballroom into the notorious nightclub for one unforgettable night. Dress as your favorite celebrity or embrace your 70s disco wild child and be prepared to party! Your ticket includes a “Liza Martini” cocktail\, hearty appetizers from our Tullibee kitchen\, and a complimentary Candy Bar stocked with retro sweets. Dance the night away with DJ Shiek and some special surprise guests! Prizes will be awarded to the top costumes.\n\nA limited number of tickets will be available.\nDon’t get caught on the wrong side of the velvet rope!

SUMMARY:Mill City Players at Central Library

Williams is the Artistic Director and comes to this project with 42 years of theater experience and incredible skills. JW (as he is known) has been a professional actor\, director\, producer and writer for almost 40 years.  Patricia Brown\, adjunct professor of dance at the University of Minnesota and Macalester College\, teaches movement and serves as Associate Director. Ahanti Young\, professional percussionist\, actor and spoken word artist\, teaches our actors drumming on paint pails and also serves as Associate Director. \n \nAhanti Young (far left\, pink shirt) teaches drumming. \nThe most exciting news is that we have agreed to make the Mill City Players a year-round troupe. Stay tuned for the details as they are still being planned. The overall plan is to offer 8-week sessions throughout the calendar year with hiatuses in between. We have seen what our actors have been able to accomplish in this short amount of time and are even more excited to have the time to keep building on their accomplishments with a predictable calendar. \nAntonello Hall at MacPhail Center for MusicOur first set of performances with this group are coming soon. Please mark your calendars to join us on August 21st at 7 p.m. in MacPhail Center for Music‘s Antonello Hall\, or on August 25th at 1:30 p.m. in Central Library‘s Pohlad Hall. Performance will be in 3 sections: Movement\, Drumming\, and Acting. The actors have been writing – you can expect to hear their own words\, and they are powerful. \nPohlad Hall\, Minneapolis Central Library \nThis troupe was created and sponsored by Friends of the Mill District. Our mission is to create and support activities that build community\, and are free of charge to all participants. We hit a home run with this group! Come and see for yourself. You do not want to miss a chance to experience what these actors have to say. \nIf you have any questions or comments\, or want to know more about supporting the work of the Friends of the Mill District\, please contact Claudia Kittock at cjkittock@gmail.com. \n– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – \n\nAbout Claudia Kittock \n\nClaudia is a resident of the Mill District. SUMMARY:Global Water Dances - Dancing for Safe Water Everywhere
DESCRIPTION:Choreographer(s): \nLori Mercil\nShe is a BFA trained dancer\, choreographer\, & instructor who has been part of the Twin Cites dance scene for the last 20 years\, working with many local artists and groups\, including Hauser Dance\, Becky Heist\, Link Vostok\, Una Setia\, Marciano Silva Dos Santos\, MotionArt\, Off-Leash Area\, Young Dance\, and Marylee Hardenbergh on many site-specific works in the area\, including as project manager for Solstice River XIX/Global Water Dance 2015. Her own work has been shown at Dances at the Lake\, Hauser Dance\, Kinetic Kitchen\, & Solstice River. Lori currently dances with Christopher Watson Dance Company\, where her work was shown in last year’s 25th Anniversary Show\, and is one of 7 other choreographers presenting work in the upcoming “16 Feet: Assorted Dances” being presented at Intermedia Arts June 8-10th. Lori is thrilled to be part of Global Water Dances again this year! \nRae Eden:\nRae Eden Frank trained with the Minnesota Dance Theater before pursuing a career in social justice. Rae currently works in the environmental health field\, and is in training to be a dance movement therapist. Rae offers community workshops using embodied movement as the medium for communication. Rae sees nature and dance as her healers and can be found dancing on the street corners or wandering in the forest. Rae is also a ritual artist and priestess of public rituals\, including the fire dance performance at an annual Brighid Festival. In 2012\, Rae was the recipient of two Irrigate Placemaking grants to develop “The Flowering Dance Project”. When not dancing\, Rae can be found spending time with her two daughters and grandson or picking up litter along the freeway. This is her fourth Global Water Dances. \nHistory of Site and Related Water Issues: \nMinnesota is home to more than 10\,000 lakes and more than 90\,000 miles of rivers and streams. Many of these waterways are threatened by pollution and agricultural practices. An estimated 40 percent of the state’s lakes and streams are polluted making them unsafe to fish from or swim in. These factors led to negative impacts on the quality of life in Minnesota. \nThe Stone Arch Bridge is a former railroad bridge crossing the Mississippi River at Saint Anthony Falls in downtown Minneapolis\, Minnesota. It is the second oldest bridge crossing the Mississippi and the only arched bridge made of stone on the entire length of the Mississippi River. \nThe word Mississippi comes from Messipi\, the French rendering of the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe or Algonquin) name for the river\, Misi-ziibi (Great River). St. Paul and Minneapolis rely on the Mississippi River as its source water supply. \nMusic: \nLive drumming \nThe Performance: \n16 to 20 dancers will perform in the center of the Stone Arch Bridge to live drumming. \n \nEnvironmental Impact: \nRaising awareness about general water issues and local concerns\, and giving audience members specific information about how they can help improve water quality in the area by providing access to information tables by local water organizations at the site on the day of the performance. \nDirections to the Site of Performance: \nGoogle directions by geographical coordinates \nEmail for more information: \n\nlmercil.dancer@gmail.com\nrae8eden@hotmail.com\n\nHow can I get involved? \nDance\, drum\, water organization informational tabling\, audience participation. \nLocal Website: \nwww.globalsiteperformance.org
