SUMMARY:Annual Earth Day 5K Bee Run/Walk/River Cleanup at Boom Island Park
DESCRIPTION:Great River Coalition Announces Annual Earth Day 5K Bee Run/Walk/River Cleanup at Boom Island Park\, April 22\nSUNDAY\, FEBRUARY 19\, 2023 AT 2:24AM | KIM ESLINGER | MILL CITY TIMES\n\nThe Great River Coalition has announced their annual Earth Day 5K Bee Run/Walk/River Cleanup at Boom Island Park\, 724 Sibley Street NE\, will take place Saturday\, April 22 from 9am to 12pm. The event features a family and dog-friendly fun run/walk\, river cleanup\, and Earth Day festivities to protect pollinators and their habitat. Learn more and register at greatrivercoalition.com/2023-beerunwalkcleanup. \nSince 2017\, the Great River Coalition has been raising funds for pollinator plantings along the Mississippi River and building awareness about the importance of protecting and saving our pollinators due to climate and environmental changes. Native pollinators\, including the federally endangered Rusty-patched bumble bee and other wild bees\, need our help more than ever. \nThe Earth Day 5K Bee Run/Walk/River Cleanup is hosted by the Great River Coalition\, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board\, the National Park Service\, St. Catherine University\, Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet\, and Mill City Running/St. City Running. \nThe 5K course traverses through the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area – the only national park offering scenic views of the Mississippi River. Following the 5K\, participants will be able to take part in an organized river cleanup and enjoy festivities including live music and entertainment\, prizes\, games for kids\, demonstrations\, and more. Photo ops will include a bee-themed selfie station\, notable appearances\, and mascots. Bee and pollinator themed costumes are highly encouraged! All are encouraged to participate in the event to help save our bees and other pollinators. \nRusty-patched bumble bee“Great River Coalition is working to expand the habitat for our pollinators\,” said Board President Diane Hofstede. “If you walk along our Minneapolis riverfront\, or travel around the state\, you’ll see the limited food resources that sustain our pollinators as they travel along the Mississippi River. The erosion created by the lack of grasslands contributes to soil and water pollution\, and encourages invasive species. The Rusty-patched bumble bee\, Minnesota’s state bumble bee\, is now listed as critically endangered. They have lost 95% of their range\, and experienced a 90% decrease in abundance. We aim to bring awareness to the vital role pollinators play in the health of our riverfront communities.” \nEvent Details: \nThe cost is $40 in advance\, $45 on Race Day. Free for kids race (ages 6 and under) and River Clean Up. Includes family-friendly activities and a celebration of Earth Day. \nThe 5K will start promptly at 9am. A free kids race\, with goodie bags\, will be held at 8:30am – children must be age 6 or under and must be registered before the event\, either online or in-person. \nRiver Clean Up volunteers should also register online before the event. This activity is free. \n \n\n\n\n\nConnect with Mill City Times on:  Facebook / Twitter

SUMMARY:Minneapolis Arbor Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Annual spring celebration shifts to the streets at block party along Third Street North between Fifth and Sixth Avenues \nThe 2022 Minneapolis Arbor Day Celebration brings an entertaining evening in appreciation of trees to North Loop neighborhood on Friday\, April 29\, 4-8 pm! After a two-year pandemic hiatus\, this year the award-winning\, traveling festival shifts out of the park and into the streets with a block party planned along Third Street North between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. \nSupporting street trees is the focus of this year’s Minneapolis Arbor Day Celebration. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is responsible for all trees planted on public property in Minneapolis\, which includes all trees on park land\, but also approximately 200\,000 trees that line 1\,100 miles of city streets and parkways. \nThe MPRB is teaming up with partner organizations that support the city’s urban trees to educate festival-goers on how to help trees survive and thrive in urban environments. The event is being held on a stretch of Third Street North that was recently rebuilt\, so people will have opportunities to help plant new trees along the freshly paved street and learn about urban tree care. \nAn initial rundown of activities and attractions is below. Share this event with anyone who may be interested at minneapolisparks.org/arborday. \nTree Planting\nJoin MPRB Arborists for tree planting excursions leaving every half hour\, 5-6:30 pm. \nArbor Day Stage\n4:30-6 pm: Live music from the Brass Messengers\n6-6:30 pm: Announcements and remarks from local elected officials\n6:30-8 pm: Live music from the Wailing Loons \nActivities\n\nInformation and activities from environmental organizations\nTree-sized lawn games\nAsk an Arborist booth\nFood Trucks\nBeer Garden\nArbor Day Fun Run – see MN Brewery Running Series website for details

SUMMARY:James Rice Park Community Sessions - March 1 and April 6
DESCRIPTION:North Loop Park Volunteers\, \n\n\nAs you know\, Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) and North Loop Neighborhood Association (NLNA) are currently developing a 5-year\, volunteer-centric plan to guide the restoration of this park\, and community input is needed! \n \nJoin FMR and NLNA at Pryes Brewing Company to learn about the plan\, share your feedback\, ask questions and find out how you can get involved. \n\nFMR is hosting two public listening sessions\, on March 1 and April 6 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Pryes Brewing Company. Light snacks will be provided\, but space is limited and registration is required. Please register today!\n\nHope you can join us! \n– North Loop Parks + Placemaking Committee   \n\n\nJoin FMR and the North Loop Neighborhood Association (NLNA) for an evening imagining the future of the natural areas at James Rice Park. This riverside park\, located along the Mississippi between the Plymouth Avenue Bridge and the Hennepin Avenue Bridge on West River Parkway\, is a space with a lot of potential for restoration and community access. \nThe park contains a variety of walking and biking paths\, picnic areas\, parking\, a playground and forested natural areas. Currently\, the park is dominated by plants like buckthorn\, bush honeysuckle and garlic mustard\, which crowd out native vegetation. This means increased erosion and a negative effect on water quality\, as well as very little habitat for pollinators\, and barriers to access and recreation. \nFMR is currently developing a 5-year\, volunteer-centric plan to guide the restoration of this park\, and community input is needed! Join FMR and NLNA at Pryes Brewing Company to learn about the plan\, share your feedback\, ask questions and find out how you can get involved. \nLocal mask guidelines will be enforced\, and we will keep you updated closer to the event dates with any change in safety plans. \nLight snacks will be provided\, but space is limited and registration is required. We are holding two community meetings to ensure we are able to hear from as many community members as possible. You can register to join us on Tuesday\, March 1\, from 5-7 pm\, or on Wednesday\, April 6\, from 5-7 pm. Please select the date you’d like to attend when registering here. \nPartners: \n\nThank you to our partners and funders: Fair State Brewing\, Hennepin County\, Marathon Foundation\, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board\, Mississippi Watershed Management Organization\, North Loop Neighborhood Association\, Pryes Brewing\, RBC Wealth Management and Xcel Energy.
