DESCRIPTION:Join this session with Fernando Burg to explore the opportunities offered by envisioning the redefinition of the North Loop viaduct. \nOpen to all. \nMinneapolis’ North Loop Viaducts Offer A Unique Opportunity – Streets.mn \nH. Fernando Burga is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota with a dual appointment at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and University of Minnesota Extension. His research\, teaching\, and service focus on urban planning\, particularly the incorporation of immigrant populations into planning\, and urban food systems. Fernando has a background in architecture\, urban design\, and urban planning. Before transitioning into academia\, he worked on an array of sustainable urbanism projects\, including designing Hope VI communities\, mixed-use infill developments\, transit-oriented developments\, and military communities. He obtained his doctorate degree in city and regional planning from the University of California\, Berkeley. His research has been published by Harvard University Press under an anthology sponsored by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts1. You can find more information about him on his curriculum vitae2 and the University of Minnesota College of Design directory3. DESCRIPTION:Service Saturdays take place from spring through fall in the North Loop. Service Saturdays include picking up trash from around the neighborhood\, working to enhance our beautiful park and playground along the river\, as well as other special activities each month. \nWe are so fortunate to have a committed crew of volunteers to help us maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our neighborhood! \nService Saturdays are held on the second Saturday of each month\, from April through November (or when the snow flies). \nThe day starts with gathering at 9:30am at Corner Coffee at 514 N 3rd Street\, where volunteers are provided with bags and gloves\, and spend an hour or so picking up trash around the neighborhood. Service Saturdays include picking up trash from around the neighborhood\, working to enhance our beautiful park and playground along the river\, as well as other special activities each month. \nWe are so fortunate to have a committed crew of volunteers to help us maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our neighborhood! \nService Saturdays are held on the second Saturday of each month\, from April through November (or when the snow flies). \nThe day starts with gathering at 9:30am at Corner Coffee at 514 N 3rd Street\, where volunteers are provided with bags and gloves\, and spend an hour or so picking up trash around the neighborhood. This makes a huge difference as we all work to keeping the North Loop a clean\, litter-free zone! \nStarting at 10am\, another volunteer group gathers at James Rice Park to begin their efforts of the day to continue working to beautify the park and playground area\, continuing to remove invasive plants\, planting trees\, shrubs and perennial plants\, and much more. \nIn addition\, special neighborhood activities and events are secheduled for Service Saturdays throughout the season. \nHere’s the schedule for the season ahead: \nJune 10 \n\nTrash Pick-up – Corner Coffee 9:30am\nFlower Gardens and Playground (Mulch Day) MPRB supported event at 4th Avenue Playground – 10am\n\nJuly 8 \n\nTrash Pick-up – Corner Coffee 9:30am\nTree Care – mulch and water new trees at James Rice Park (Central/North Riverbanks) – 10am\n\nAugust 12 \n\nTrash Pick-up – Corner Coffee 9:30am\nJames Rice Park Clean-up with focus on Invasive Plant Removal\, especially buckthorn and invasive vines\, focusing in the South and North Forests. This will help prepare the ground for the Tree Planting event in September. – 10am\n\nSeptember 9 \n\nTrash Pick-up – Corner Coffee 9:30am\nThe big North Loop Tree Planting event at James Rice Park North Riverbank. Activities will include digging/planting the 150 saplings\, plus staking\, ID flagging\, covering (tree tubes)\, mulching\, and watering the new trees.
