SUMMARY:Open Window Theatre Presents Everyman in Urban Jungle
DESCRIPTION:The classic old English morality play is given a modern twist with an urban setting\, live music and a diverse cast rotating into the roles of Everyman.\nThe newest production at Open Window Theatre brings a classic piece of theatre literature to the stage with an urban setting\, live music and a diverse cast.  In his contemporary take on Everyman\, director Jeremy Stanbary (Artistic Director\, Open Window Theatre) pulls from his own roots of Catholicism to bring out the universality of this medieval morality play as well as the rich symbolism within.  “The play mixes poetry with no-holds-barred imagery\,” Stanbary says\, “and deals with problems of wealth\, power and self-indulgence which can be destructive to humans and the common good.” \nThe set design\, with its multi-level metal piping\, provides an urban jungle playground for the cast in a prison-like structure\, giving a sense of Everyman’s entrapment to his/her material world.  The costumes supply a “high impact look\,” according to designer Josette Elstad\, which plays out with various textures and layers\, echoing both Greek chorus and gothic-inspirations.  Original music performed live during the show will blend medieval with modern influences\, intermixing digital music and sounds.  Guest artists SPARK Theater + Dance (Corey and Betsy Mills) will add stunning visual imagery to the story through movement and choreography. \nThe cast features an eight-person ensemble\, with five diverse actors (including women) rotating into the role of Everyman for a portion of the performance.  With each actor rotation\, a prop piece of what Everyman has acquired will be removed except for a common shroud that symbolically defines the spiritual element of the fateful journey.  According to Stanbary\, the play is “not afraid to pull punches\,” even calling out corrupt members of the clergy. \nThe cast of Everyman includes Corey Mills (Everyman #1 & #6/Confession)\, Nicole Goeden (Everyman #2/Beauty/Angel)\, Kiara Jackson (Everyman #3/Strength)\, Elohim Pena (Everyman #4/Fellowship/Five Wits)\, Joann Oudekerk (Everyman #5/Kindred)\, Sharayah Bunce (Death/Good-Deeds)\, Siddeqah Shabazz (Messenger/Knowledge) and Nathan Gebhard (Cousin/Goods/Discretion). \nThe artistic team is Jeremy Stanbary (Director/Producer)\, Justin Barisonek (Scenic Design)\, Courtney Schmitz (Lighting Design)\, Josette Elstad (Costume Design)\, Corey and Betsy Mills (Movement)\, Jeromy Darling and Kurt Larson (Sound Design)\, Nate Farley (Props) and Lisette Matos (Stage Manager). \nOpen Window Theatre has free parking and is located at 1313 Chestnut Ave #102\, Minneapolis\, just north of the Basilica of St. Mary.  Single tickets start at $16 (for children)\, $26 (for adults) and are on sale through the box office at 612/615-1515 or online at www.openwindowtheatre.org. \nFEBRUARY 19-MARCH 20\nThursdays-Saturdays @ 7:45pm\nSundays @ 1:30pm\nSpecial matinees:  Wednesdays\, March 2 & 9 @ 10:30am\, and Saturday\, March 19 @ 1:30pm \nTICKETS:  $16-30.  Box Office:  612/615-1515\, or website: https://openwindowtheatre.org/theater/get-tickets \nThursdays are “Pay-As-You’re-Able” for a $1 minimum at the door for any unsold tickets. \nNorth Loop Neighborhood Discount:  Use the coupon code NORTHLOOP to receive $2.00 off any ticket!\nCONTACTS: \nJeremy Stanbary\, Director\, 612/615-1515\, email:  jstanbary@openwindowtheatre.org\nJoy Donley\, Publicist\, 952/454-7344\, email:  press@openwindowtheatre.org

SUMMARY:Hennepin Avenue Reconstruction (Washington Avenue-12th Street
DESCRIPTION:The Minneapolis City Council is considering a street reconstruction project on Hennepin Avenue between Washington Avenue and 12th Street. The Hennepin Avenue reconstruction project is currently programmed in the City’s Capital Improvement Program for the year 2020. \nThe Department of Public Works is conducting preliminary planning work in 2016 in order to submit an application for federal transportation funding that would help support the project in addition to State and local funding. Prior to submitting the grant application in the summer of 2016\, Public Works will be seeking City Council approval for a preferred street corridor that establishes a general concept for the design of Hennepin Avenue. \nPublic Works will hold an informational meeting to introduce the scope of the 2020 Hennepin Avenue reconstruction project and discuss the purpose of the initial planning work in 2016. The meeting will be held on Wednesday\, February 17 at 4:00 p.m. with a repeat presentation at 5:00 p.m. If you wish to attend\, you only need to attend one presentation. \nPublic Works staff will be present to answer questions and there will be opportunities to provide general feedback about the corridor. There will be future opportunities in spring of 2016 to review proposed corridor concepts and provide feedback. \nAdditional information can be found on the attached page and on the project website: www.minneapolismn.gov/cip/future/WCMSP-172270 If you have any questions about this project\, please contact Simon Blenski at 612-673-5012 or Simon.Blenski@minneapolismn.gov.

SUMMARY:National African-American Parent Involvement Day
DESCRIPTION:National African-American Parent Involvement Day\nHistory \n\n\nNational African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) started in 1996. It was the brainchild of Joseph Dulin\, a longtime school principal in Michigan. He was attending the Million Man March in Washington\, D.C. and was inspired by a speaker at the event who challenged the men in the crowd to go back to their communities and do more. \nWhat is NAAPID? \nNAAPID is a national call to action to get parents\, particularly those of children of African-American descent\, more involved in their educational lives. It is expected that this national observation will open up dialogue among teachers\, parents\, and students\, which will lead to a more conducive learning environment for African American students from kindergarten through college. \nWhy NAAPID? \nNAAPID’s call to action is designed to address the serious achievement gap facing African- American students\, who continue to lag behind other ethnic and minority groups. Research shows that the more that parents are involved in the educational lives of their children\, the greater their academic success. Therefore\, NAAPID is making a concerted effort to get more parents involved in this win/win endeavor that will benefit all stakeholders. \nWhen is NAAPID? \nNAAPID is held the second Monday in February (Black History Month). \nHow is MPS celebrating? \nMany schools are hosting events across the district. We are also hosting a districtwide family event at the Roller Gardens on February 8\, 2016 from 6-8 pm.  Parents will learn about enriching programs\, engage with MPS staff\, request enrollment for 2016-17 school year and much more. This is a free event for all MPS families.

SUMMARY:Minneapolis School Fair Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) is partnering with schools throughout the city to host the upcoming School Fair Showcase\, an annual event where more than 70 public and charter schools gather to share the programs\, activities and educational opportunities they can offer to students.   The free event gives families the chance to explore the Pre-K–12 options available across Minneapolis so they can make an informed decision about which school will best meet their student’s needs. \nFamilies will be able to submit their school request forms for the 2016-17 school year. Request forms may also be submitted online at studentplacement.mpls.k12.mn.us until March 5. School request forms are necessary for incoming kindergartners and ninth-graders. They can also be submitted by students in any grade looking to switch to a new school next year or incoming middle school students who do not wish to attend their pathway middle school. \nTo learn more about the School Fair Showcase\, visit https://studentplacement.mpls.k12.mn.us/minneapolis_school_fair_showcase
