SUMMARY:STORIES FROM THE BOOK OF HARBOR LIGHT — Preview
DESCRIPTION:Come challenge your perceptions of homelessness and share in a community-building experience. zAmya Theater\, in collaboration with Hennepin Theatre Trust and The Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Center\, created Stories from the Book of Harbor Light. It is based on storytelling\, writing and acting workshops with people staying at the Harbor Light Center and others who have experienced homelessness or are currently homeless. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe workshops and play were inspired by a mural commissioned by the Trust for the Harbor Light Center. Artist Bianca Pettis used the mural to amplify the voices of Harbor Light residents by having conversations with them to inspire her artwork and create a sense of community and belonging. Now\, you can see those stories come to life in an original theatre piece at 900 Hennepin. \n“A big theme that has stood out for me is homeless people tend to feel alone\,” says Stories from the Book of Harbor Light playwright Caroline Mannheimer. “They almost all crave community\, fellowship. Sometimes all a person needs is for another to listen to their story.” \nLearn about the making of Stories From the Book of Harbor Light! \nSee FREE Preview performances at the Harbor Light Center Chapel March 8 and 9 at 7pm and March 10 at 3pm. \nSee Stories from the Book of Harbor Light March 15 at 6 p.m. at 900 Hennepin Ave. with a reception at 5:30 p.m. A donation of $20 is recommended. Our goal is to bring together a socially diverse audience. Proceeds will benefit The Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Center. No one will be turned away due to inability to pay. \nStories from the Book of Harbor Light is supported by the Carolyn Foundation and a grant to Harbor Light from the Minnesota State Arts Board’s Partners in Arts Participation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPosted in Performance\nTagged The Book of Harbor Light

SUMMARY:You Am I Opening Reception - Veronique Wantz Gallery
DESCRIPTION:‘YOU AM I’ \nStep into this lively and colorful Utopia where class\, race\, sexuality\, age\, abilities\, belief systems and gender dance in all their beauty and complexities to a rhythmic beat of respect\, tolerance and understanding. \nIntermingled\, intertwined\, interfacing. In an age where we seek ideological purity\, ‘You Am I’ examines how each of these facets of our identity can coexist in analogous ambiguity. How are these multiplicities embraced? Is there a singular thread that weaves across the identity landscape: binding\, repairing? Is there a rise of fantastical individualism? Or does identity melt into a pool of punctuated homogeny? As the dance progresses\, do we forget to notice? Our diversity becomes our unity as we sway forward to the beat of this neoteric revolution. \nYou am I\, I am you\, we are one.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI’m attending!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEXHIBITION DATES\nTuesday March 26th\n11AM – 6PM \nWednesday March 27th\n11AM – 7PM \nThursday March 28th\n11AM – 7PM \nFriday March 29th\n11AM – 9PM \nSaturday March 30th\n11AM – 5PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOPENING RECEPTION\nAND JUXTAPOSITION ARTS FUNDRAISER\n\nFriday 29th March 5PM – 9PM\n— \nIn conjunction with Artaxis\, we are honored to be holding a fundraiser during the reception to support Juxtaposition Arts through the sale of donated works by Artaxis members.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsored by Artaxis\, this venue originated exhibition is part of ‘Claytopia’ the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts 2019 Conference in Minneapolis. \nCurated by Louisa Vincent\, Gallery Director\, Veronique Wantz Gallery; Samuel Johnson\, Artaxis Board Member and Professor of Art and Department Chair at College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University\, NCECA Member & Juliane Shibata\, Artaxis member. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:A Dialogue Between Generations - Minneapolis Central Library
DESCRIPTION:More Than a Single Story: Men of Color in Today’s America – A Dialogue Between Generations \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore Than a Single Story is a series of conversations curated by writer Carolyn Holbrook\, inspired by Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s powerful TED talk\, The Danger of a Single Story\, showing how stereotypes are fostered when we treat one story of a people as their only story.\n\n\n\n\nThe difficulties young men of color face today are oppressive and often life-threatening. From education to the justice system to stereotypes in the media to discriminatory public policies\, the environment many young men of color grow up in is not conducive to their psychological health or to fulfilling their potential. Yet there are many young men of color who are succeeding despite the world around them and older men of color who are helping them. \nThis panel\, moderated by David Mura\, will provide a dialogue between younger and older men of color about the conditions they face in the current political and social climate and the strategies used to survive\, help others and help themselves. Panelists include Alexs Pate\, Carter Meland\, Ricardo Levins Morales\, Kevin Yang\, Yevrah Bradley and Suleiman Ada.
