In them\, she captures the isolation and resilience of a damaged but unbroken child making her way decisively towards adulthood. “My work has always been driven by a desire to create a safe place for myself and for those who consider themselves outsiders. We live in a world of cataclysm and upheaval\, not by accident but as a result of the crushing limitations and controls set by centuries of patriarchal misgovernance. Can we make a better place that includes all of us? For me that is one of the tasks of art: to create a world where everyone can breathe and live free. Through our art\, we can help make a world where differences flourish and love obliterates hate.”\n \nArtist’s Biography\nChris has had careers as a theater artist (writer\, director\, performer)\, ELL teacher\, and visual artist. She toured her one-woman trilogy of plays\, “Growing Up Queer in America”\, throughout the US from 1985 to 1996. As a teacher\, she was deeply engaged with and influenced by her students. Both of these careers have had a profound effect on her life as a visual artist. Chris has received grants from the Bush and Jerome Foundations\, as well as the Minnesota State Arts Board. Her work has been exhibited by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts\, ARC Gallery in Chicago\, Hopkins Center for the Arts\, as well as in Texas\, Kansas\, Michigan\, Oregon and throughout Minnesota. She will be showing a large body of her work at the Phipps Center for the Arts in the Fall. Chris has been a member of Form+Content since 2020. This is her second solo exhibition at the gallery. More of her work can be seen at: www.chriscinque.com and www.formandcontent.org. She can also be reached at chriscnq@gmail.com \nPress Images \nFor high resolution images\, please contact chriscnq@gmail.com \n \nThe Suitcase\, charcoal on paper\, 68″ x 28″\, 2022 \n \nTo the Beach\, charcoal on paper\, 50″ x 25″\, 2023 \nMission Statement\nForm+Content Gallery nurtures diverse artistic practice and thoughtful dialogue. We value art as a catalyst for critical thinking. We value integrity and the artistic process. We aspire to link personal expression to broader social contexts. Form+Content Gallery is dedicated to moving the definitions and practice of culture forward in new and lively ways. \nCovid-19 policy\nWe are following the current Covid-19 protocol set forth by the Minnesota Department of Health. She translates the vibrancy and complexity of reflected images using the sensual medium of oil stick and the gestural engagement of drawing. These works become expressions that hover between recognition and mystery. The artist plays on the double meaning of reflection\, attentive to the sometimes ambiguous images projected onto the water (is this real or mirrored\, is this what I see?) while engaging in meditations on the natural cycles of life and the intertwined journeys of the human and natural world. \n  \nArtist’s Biography \nJoyce Lyon has used drawing and digital imagery / artist’s books to address issues of identity\, ecology and ageing from a personal and female perspective. Recent exhibitions include Crosby Farm Park (Groveland Gallery\, Minneapolis)\, Passing Radiance and Some Pages for a Book of Hours (Form+Content Gallery) and Shifting Perspectives: Dialogue in Place with Andrea Thoma (University of Leeds\, England). In support of her work she has received grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, the Jerome Foundation and the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Her work is in many public and private collections\, including the Minnesota Historical Society; the Georgetown University Law Library\, Washington\, D.C.; the Florida Holocaust Museum / Tampa; the Federal Reserve Bank / Minneapolis; and the Weisman Art Museum\, Minneapolis. She was a founding member of the feminist collective\, WARM: Women’s Art Registry of Minnesota\, and has shown her work regularly at Groveland and Form+Content Galleries. Joyce is Associate Professor of Art emerita at the University of Minnesota. \nPress Images \nFor high resolution images\, please contact lyonx001@umn.edu \n\nJoyce Lyon\, Cooper’s Pond\, Study 2\, 2023\, oil stick on paper\, 23 x 31.5″ \n\nJoyce Lyon\, Cooper’s Pond 3\, 2023\, oil stick on paper\, 40″ x 51.5″ \nMission Statement\nForm+Content Gallery nurtures diverse artistic practice and thoughtful dialogue.
