SUMMARY:Two-week closure of Hwy 55 west of downtown Mpls to begin Oct. 30
DESCRIPTION:Work now to move\, replace outdated storm water tunnel will save money\, time\nBlue Line Extension LRT station to be built later above tunnel’s present location  \nMINNEAPOLIS – Oct. 24\, 2017 — Starting Oct. 30\, Highway 55 just west of downtown Minneapolis between Van White Memorial Boulevard and West Lyndale Avenue will be closed for about two weeks to replace a structurally deficient storm sewer. The work also will save time and money later when a Blue Line Extension light rail station is built at the intersection above the sewer’s present location. \nDuring construction\, traffic will be detoured to Highway 100 and Interstate 394. For a detour map and construction information\, see https://bit.ly/2xchv5A and https://bit.ly/2zoEA5R \nThe work is being coordinated with the Minnesota Department of Transportation and city of Minneapolis in preparation for the start of Blue Line Extension LRT heavy construction. MnDOT identified the 130-year old storm sewer pipe as structurally deficient and budgeted $3.2 million to replace it. The pipe also needs to be moved to make room for construction of LRT tracks in the highway median and the future Van White Boulevard Station.  \n“Coordinating the work is saving roughly $3 million dollars and minimizing impacts to the traveling public by avoiding MnDOT crews from having to repair the tunnel now and then having other crews relocate it underground east of the station during LRT construction\,” said Dan Soler\, director of the Blue Line Extension LRT Project. \nHighway traffic will be detoured while local access will be maintained  \nThe quarter-mile closure of this major commuter route will occur between West Lyndale Avenue and Van White Memorial Boulevard. Highway traffic will be detoured onto Highway 100 and I-394. \nRoute 19 buses will be detoured around the closure area\, and rider alerts will be posted at impacted bus stops. Crews will maintain local access to the surrounding neighborhoods and Summit Academy OIC. A sidewalk along Highway 55 will remain open. Planned roadway detours will not impact access to existing polling locations. \nBlue Line Extension LRT Project staff have coordinated the Highway 55 closure dates with MnDOT\, Hennepin County and the city. Work on I-94\, I-394 and Highway 169 is complete\, and lanes are reopened.  Crews are planning to work around the clock seven days a week to keep the closure period as short as possible. \n“Replacing and relocating the tunnel as quickly as possible minimizes the impact to the region in the short term\, while benefitting the public in the long run with better infrastructure and transit. Replacing the pipe now benefits the public by not waiting until it fails\, which would require more tax dollars and result in a longer road closure\,” Soler said. \nPartial lane closures will occur at times over the winter while crews reconnect the new tunnel. Crews will finish restoration work in spring 2018. \nHow to get detour information \nVariable message signs will alert the public about the closure and detours. Detour information is also available at www.BlueLineExt.org for drivers\, trail users and bus riders. People can also sign up to receive email or text alerts on the project website. The information will also be available on the project’s Twitter account (@BlueLineExt) and the Metropolitan Council’s Facebook page (@MetropolitanCouncil). \nEditors’ note: For more information about the LRT project\, visit www.BlueLineExt.org. \nGet more information about this closure at https://metrocouncil.org/ble/videos/omh or by contacting community outreach coordinator Sophia Ginis at Sophia.Ginis@metrotransit.org or 612-373-3895 or by signing up for email or text alerts on the project website.

SUMMARY:Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) - VOTE November 7th!
DESCRIPTION:Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) is being used to elect our mayor\, city council members\, park board representatives and member of the Board of Estimate and Taxation on Nov. 7. Adopted by Minneapolis voters in 2006 and used for the first time in 2009\, RCV will get its second big test in this year’s highly competitive mayoral\, at-large Park Board and city council elections Identifying second and third choices isn’t mandatory\, but it’s smart. Ranking your ballot 1-2-3 gives you more choice and gives your ballot more power. \nRanked Choice Voting works just like two elections – a primary and a general election – but it’s done in a single trip to the polls. It has eliminated the low-turnout August primary\, when historically a tiny\, unrepresentative group of voters culled the field to just two viable choices for everyone else. Best of all\, RCV requires that candidates receive support from the broadest swatch of voters possible. \nRCV allows you to identify two backup choices in case your #1 candidate doesn’t gather majority support in order to win in the first round of counting. That means choosing your favorite – plus two other candidates you could live with – and marking them in order of preference on your ballot. Identifying backup choices isn’t mandatory\, but it’s smart. Ranking your ballot 1-2-3 gives you more choice and gives your ballot more power. \nEach ballot will have three columns. Simply mark the ballot left to right\, indicating your first choice in the first column\, your second choice in the next column\, and your third choice in the column after that. “Bullet voting\,” marking just one choice or marking the same candidate in all three columns\, is identical to only picking a first choice. It’s just like voting in the primary\, but sitting out the general election if your first choice doesn’t make it through. \nFully ranking your ballot in the mayoral and other multicandidate races means that if your favorite candidate doesn’t gather enough support in the first or second rounds of counting and is eliminated\, your vote will transfer to your next choice and you’ll continue to be part of the decision-making process. \nIdentifying three candidates that are acceptable to you takes a bit more effort than choosing one\, to be sure. But it’s worth it\, and ensures there’s a bigger chance you’ll help elect someone you like – or could live with. \nTo learn more about who’s on the ballot and how RCV works in Minneapolis\, visit www.rankyourvote.org and  vote.minneapolismn.gov. \nClick here to see a video about how Ranked Choice voting works: https://vote.minneapolismn.gov/rcv/index.htm \nAnd click here to download your sample ballot: https://myballotmn.sos.state.mn.us/ \n  \n

SUMMARY:Proposed Freight Rail Corridor Protection Wall
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the design of the proposed corridor protection wall between freight rail and light rail tracks in Minneapolis\, and give your input on aesthetic design options.  \nBetween Glenwood Avenue and Bryn Mawr Station in Minneapolis\, METRO Green Line Extension tracks will run parallel to high volume mainline freight rail tracks (the Wayzata Subdivision). The current design of the Southwest LRT project includes protection for bridge piers and other corridor elements in this area. The additional corridor protection wall between the freight rail and light rail tracks is required by BNSF as a condition for allowing the LRT tracks to be built on its right of way. \nFor more information about the proposed corridor protection wall and to view a video of the area\, visit the project’s website at www.swlrt.org. If you can’t attend this meeting\, a comment form and open house materials will be posted on the website to receive your feedback. \nAbout the Project:  \nThe planned Southwest Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project (METRO Green Line Extension) will operate from downtown Minneapolis through the communities of St. Louis Park\, Hopkins\, Minnetonka\, and Eden Prairie\, passing in close proximity to the city of Edina. The line will connect major activity centers in the region including downtown Minneapolis\, Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park\, downtown Hopkins and the Opus/Golden Triangle employment area in Minnetonka and Eden Prairie. Ridership in 2040 is forecasted at approximately 34\,000 average weekday boardings. The project will interline with the METRO Green Line\, which will provide a one-seat ride to destinations such as the University of Minnesota\, state Capitol and downtown St. Paul. It will be part of an integrated system of transitways\, including connections to the METRO Blue Line\, the proposed METRO Blue Line Extension\, the Northstar Commuter Rail line\, a variety of major bus routes along the alignment\, and proposed future transitway and rail lines. The Metropolitan Council will be the grantee of federal funds. The regional government agency is charged with building the line in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The Southwest Corridor Management Committee\, which includes commissioners from Hennepin County and the mayors of Minneapolis\, St. Louis Park\, Edina\, Hopkins\, Minnetonka\, and Eden Prairie\, provides advice and oversight. Funding is provided by the Federal Transit Administration\, Hennepin County\, Counties Transit Improvement Board (CTIB)\, Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority (HCRRA)\, state of Minnesota\, and other project partners. The Southwest LRT Project website is www.swlrt.org \nIf you require assistance to participate\, please contact Sophia Ginis at least seven business days before the scheduled meeting: \nEmail: Sophia.Ginis@metrotransit.org \nPhone: 612-373-3895

SUMMARY:Southwest LRT Proposed Wall - Community Open House
DESCRIPTION:Plan requires tweaks\, given its impact on historic area.\n\nBy Janet Moore : Star Tribune : NOVEMBER 8\, 2017\n\n\n\n\n\nSouthwest LRT officials led a tour in September of the area where a 10-foot wall is proposed. Here\, Brian Runzel\, SWLRT construction director\, walked under the I-394 Bridge near the Bryn Mawr Station Area in Minneapolis. \n\n\n\nA proposed concrete wall separating freight and light-rail trains along a short stretch of the Southwest light-rail line will “adversely affect” a historic rail district in Minneapolis\, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) said this week.\n\n\n\nThe 1.4-mile wall\, which will be 10-feet high in some places\, was added to the project at the behest of BNSF Railway\, which owns the right of way between the Royalston Avenue/Farmers Market and Bryn Mawr LRT stations. \nThe $20 million wall would be located within the St. Paul\, Minneapolis & Manitoba Railroad/Great Northern Railway Historic District. Because the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) determined the historic district is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places\, a review of the proposed changes was required. \nThe FTA found the wall would “adversely affect” the historic district because building it would involve widening “the historic cut\, removal of several historic retaining walls\, replacement of historic stone and concrete walls and earthen embankment\, changing its character.” \nThe wall will also serve as a “physical and visual barrier” between freight track and the historic rail yards\, the review stated. \nNow the Met Council\, which is building and operating the $1.9 billion Southwest line\, will work with MnDOT to prepare a “mitigation plan” to minimize the concrete wall’s effects on the historic property. \n\n\n\n\nDAVID JOLES – STAR TRIBUNE FILE\nRunze showed an artist’s rendering of the Bryn Mawr Station Area during a tour in September. DAVID JOLES ï david.joles@startribune.com Controversy continues to stir over a proposed 10-foot concrete wall that will separate freight and light trains along the Southwest LRT route in Minneapolis. In an effort to appease its critics\, the Met Council is conducting tours along the $20 million mile-long path slated for the wall.**Brian Runzel\,cq\n\nThe Minnesota Historic Preservation Office\, the city of Minneapolis and its park board\, and Hennepin County are expected to contribute to the plan and offer suggestions on its design. \nAn open house for the community is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Bryn Mawr Elementary School\, 252 Upton Av. S. in Minneapolis.\nThe 14½-mile Southwest light-rail line would connect downtown Minneapolis with Eden Prairie\, with passenger service beginning in 2022.

SUMMARY:Traffic Zone Patrick Pryor Art Exhibition - Public Reception
DESCRIPTION:Patrick Pryor\, Maquettes\, 2017\, painted wood\, 23 x 4 x 4 in. \n\nMINNEAPOLIS\, MN (October 20\, 2017) Traffic Zone Gallery presents Constructions\, an exhibition of new work by Patrick Pryor. Ever intent on exploring the potentials for creativity and expression with painting and sculptural processes\, Pryor’s new series of works demonstrates his findings. In these works\, Pryor juxtaposes intuitive mark making and systematic patterns\, layering and erasure. Just as Pryor’s new ventures into three-dimensional work entail processes of construction or building\, so do his acrylic and graphite works on canvas. For his large paintings\, Pryor’s current artist practice begins with intuitive mark and pattern making\, which he outlines with tape. Over time\, the paint he applies builds up along tape in slight relief creating a crisp edge. Pryor photographs the results and generates a digital file of that image. He then further manipulates the pattern digitally\, or physically by cutting up transparencies of the digital file so he can use the same pattern to discover vastly different results. In the completed paintings\, after the painted layers are sanded down\, he applies graphite on top or highlights painted lines in a grey so they appear as drawn graphite lines. \nArtist Statement\n“Creating this strata of work and strata of material\,” Pryor explains\, “is like burying something\, then unearthing it again. The process becomes one that is similar to archaeological discovery. While the focus of the creative process is a back and forth between intuition and a highly planned\, structured arrangement of lines on the canvas\,” he continues\, “the sense of discovering something originally hidden from view\, that represents a remnant or part of the history of the canvas\, is what interests me.” Pryor’s sculptural works take their cues from his paintings. Using plaster\, wood and graphite\, he generates intuitive forms based on the paintings\, transforming them into three-dimensional objects. Once again\, he says\, “the graphite lines\, layers of paint and sanding to reveal remnants of the original lines is a celebratory part of my process. The sculptures are\, then\, another physical manifestation of the almost sculptural-like layering of paint that happens on my canvases.” \nArtist Biography\nPatrick Pryor works from a place of spontaneous intelligence. He generates bold statements that engage mind and heart by using color and gesture to explore abstract ideas of humor\, beauty and absurdity. A former environmental engineer and science educator\, he also draws from that experience by abstracting forms and patterns from the natural world. Site-specific installations of Pryor’s work have appeared in more than 140 locations in Minnesota and Canada. As an interdisciplinary collaborator he’s worked in film and video\, and with dancers\, other visual artists and fashion designers\, including Christopher Straub from Project Runway. \nExhibition\nNovember 18 – December 29\, 2017\nGallery hours: Monday–Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and by appointment\nFree and open to the public \n\npatrick@patrickpryor.com\nhttps://patrickpryor.com/home.html \n\n \nPatrick Pryor\, Hypnerotomachia\, 2017\, acrylic on canvas\, 74 x 86 in. \n\nTraffic Zone Mission Statement\nTraffic Zone Center for Visual Art supports the work of mid-career professional artists with high-quality\, affordable studios and the engagement of audiences with gallery exhibitions\, open studio events\, art classes and workshops.

SUMMARY:Minneapolis 2040 - Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Minneapolis Department of Community Planning and Economic Development wants to hear from YOU! Join your neighbors in shaping our city to become a healthy\, sustainable\, and thriving place for all. \nMinneapolis 2040 is an update to the City’s Comprehensive Plan\, a document that shapes how Minneapolis will grow and change. The plan will cover topics such as housing\, job creation\, the design of new buildings\, and how we use our streets. \nOver the past year\, City planners have learned a lot from Minneapolis residents about the future of our city. We’ve heard that as the city grows\, everyone must benefit from that growth. You told us that it can be difficult to access jobs that are not located nearby. We’ve heard concerns about the rising cost of housing\, and that not everyone has access to the type of housing that meets their needs. We’ve also heard that people value well-designed and environmentally sustainable buildings\, and that there is a desire for the city to be more walkable\, bikeable\, and mass transit-friendly. \nPlease attend one of four upcoming family friendly\, interactive open houses in early December. Enjoy complimentary refreshments from local vendors.
