SUMMARY:Global Conversations MINNEAPOLIS: Turkey – A Partner in Crisis (Minneapolis Central Library)
DESCRIPTION:Of all NATO allies\, Turkey represents the most daunting challenge for the Trump administration. In the wake of a failed military coup in July 2016\, the autocratic trend in Ankara took a turn for the worse. One year on\, an overwhelming majority of the population considers the United States to be their country’s greatest security threat. In this age of a worsening “clash of civilizations” between Islam and the West\, even more important than its place on the map is what Turkey symbolically represents as the most institutionally Westernized Muslim country in the world.\n\nJoin us for a thought-provoking conversation with former Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson as he discusses the current situation in Turkey and its impact on foreign policy. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmbassador Ross Wilson is a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council\, visiting lecturer in international affairs at the George Washington University\, and Global Minnesota board member. Over the course of a 30-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service\, he served as American ambassador to Turkey and Azerbaijan and held assignments at the U.S. Embassies in Moscow and Prague and at the U.S. Consulate General in Melbourne\, Australia. In Washington\, Ambassador Wilson held several positions including chief U.S. negotiator for the Free Trade Area of the Americas. In 2010-2014\, Ambassador Wilson served as director of the Atlantic Council’s Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center\, where he led the Council’s work on the former Soviet states\, Turkey\, and regional energy and economic issues and organized the Council’s annual Energy and Economic Summit in Istanbul. Ambassador Wilson received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota and master’s degrees from Columbia University and the U.S. National War College.  He is a recipient of the president’s Meritorious Service Award\, as well as numerous Department of State awards and honors. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is produced in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library. \n\n\n\n\nRegistration Time: 5:30 pm

SUMMARY:Art at 801 Gallery
DESCRIPTION:801 Washington Lofts Art at 801 Gallery presents\nJaffa Aharonov\, Marc Lamm\, Kelley Meister\, Josie Winship\nArtists working with installation\, drawing\, photography\, woodcarvings and assemblage. \nOpening reception Saturday\, February 24th\, 2018 6pm to 9pm\nMusic by David Ruth and Friends \nShow runs through May 2018\n801 Washington Avenue North\, Minneapolis \nJaffa Aharonov\nWhile much of Jaffa’s photographic work centers around the (human) body\, this collection is focused on traces of human existence. These images have a stillness that\, while shot in 2016\, could be from a future that we haunt\, but no longer are part of. \nJaffaAharonov.com \nMarc Lamm\nMarc works with wood like a painter works with oils and a sculptor works with stone.\nWhen his art is seen from a distance\, it appears the lines and shapes are painted on the wood\, not the real\, natural colors of the various woods. As you move laterally\, the lines\, shapes and shadows flow over the carvings and change like a landscape seen from an airplane. Upon approaching Marc’s woodcarvings\, the shallow contours not seen from a distance suddenly appear like swells on a lake. And when viewing the art at night and the lights are set at a low angle\, the carvings make hard shadows and create an entirely new image. The artist encourages people to touch his art\, to feel the smooth undulating surface of the wood. These various aspects of the art give it life and invites interaction to the art in many ways.\nMarcLamm.com \nKelley Meister\nKelley Meister (pronouns: ze/hir/hirs) is a multidisciplinary artist who is currently making work in response to life during the Anthropocene\, the era where humans have irreversibly influenced the earth\, its climate and environment. This current work is a series of large-scale charcoal and pastel drawings examining the impact of the US’s nuclear program\, from war to radioactive contamination.\nKelleyMeister.com \nJosie Winship\nJosie’s orange\, pink\, blue and yellow mobiles\, made from wood scraps and recycled kitchen cabinet doors\, will hang from the giant beams of 801 Lofts. SUMMARY:BOOKS: ALTERED LANGUAGE DICTIONARY - Traffic Zone Public Reception
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Vesna Kittelson\, Language Dictionaries I\, 2017\, altered books \nBOOKS: ALTERED LANGUAGE DICTIONARY : PAINTING COLLAGE SCULPTURE \nAn exhibition of cut and mended language dictionaries transformed into paintings\, collages\, and sculptures\, by Vesna Kittelson \nMarch 1 – April 6\, 2018\nGallery hours: Monday – Friday\, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm\n \nvkittelson@aol.com \n \nVesna Kittelson\, Language Dictionaries II\, 2017\, altered books \nMINNEAPOLIS\, MN (November 5\, 2017) Traffic Zone Gallery presents Books: Altered Language Dictionary\, Painting\, Collage\, Sculpture\, an exhibition of new work by Vesna Kittelson. This exhibition is an exploration of how to discover possibilities of painting\, collage\, and sculpture\, through an intervention upon a book. A language dictionary\, this familiar\, user friendly object; this comforting collection of words and cultural identities; this soft\, thought provoking object; carries a quietly mysterious power of addressing politics\, economics\, and identities. The exhibition is a depiction of Kittelson’s compelling fascination with the material process of transforming a book into painting\, and collage – by cutting and covering it with encaustic\, rust\, tar\, gold leaf\, metallic leaf\, adhesive letters – thus restoring and transforming it into a sculptural object to be displayed on a plinth\, while remaining a book in its appearance and meaning. \nArtist Statement \nFor several years\, I have been pondering how as an artist to draw together threads of my thinking about human conflict and violence between different human groups. I decided to address this universal philosophical question by abstracting an ancient myth – Tower of Babel – where people spoke different languages and could not understand each other\, today Trump vs. Kim Yong-un. By altering and transforming language dictionaries – stores of identity – I create Babel Books and Babel Libraries. Each dictionary is an exploration of crossing the boundary between an everyday object\, a book; and painting\, collage\, and sculpture. Displayed\, they present a possibility relevant to our time – a peaceful co-existence\, where no language dominates. Vesna Kittelson \n  \n \nVesna Kittelson\, Language Dictionaries III\, 2017\, altered books \nArtist Biography \nVesna Krezich Kittelson was born in Bosnia-Herzegovina\, and is of Croatian descent.  She grew up in Split\, Croatia where she obtained a B.A. in Law. Later she obtained a B.A. in Fine Arts and an M.A. in Design\, both from the University of Minnesota. Kittelson’s work is included in the following public collections: Brooklyn Museum Artist Book Collection\, Brooklyn\, NY\, Bush Foundation Collection\, Saint Paul\, MN\, Cafesjian Center for the Arts\, Armenia\, Minnesota Center for Book Arts\, Minneapolis\, MN\, Minnesota History Center\, Saint Paul\, MN\, Minnesota Museum of American Art\, Saint Paul\, MN\, Smithsonian National Library\, Dibner Library\, Washington\, DC\, Tate Library\, Tate Britain\, London\, GB\, Walker Art Center\, Minneapolis\, MN\, Weisman Art Museum\, Minneapolis\, MN\, Yale University Art Library\, New Haven\, CT. \nTraffic Zone Mission Statement \nTraffic Zone Center for Visual Art supports the work of mid-career professional artists with high-quality\, affordable studios and the engagement of audiences with gallery exhibitions\, open studio events\, art classes and workshops.

SUMMARY:2018 Minnesota Book Artist Award: Works by Erica Spitzer Rasmussen
DESCRIPTION:February 1\, 2018 – March 13\, 2018\nOpen Book Cowles Literary Commons\nErica Spitzer Rasmussen is the 2018 Minnesota Book Artist Award winner for her work entitled The Love Affair. This annual award\, presented by Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA) and the Minnesota Book Awards\, and sponsored by Lerner Publishing Group\, recognizes a Minnesota book artist or book artist collaborative group for excellence of a new artistic work\, demonstrated proficiency and quality in the book arts through their body of work\, as well as an ongoing commitment and significant contributions to Minnesota’s book arts community. \nThe Love Affair is a mixed-media sculptural book handcrafted from pieces of old family letters. Rasmussen was inspired to create the piece when she inherited two handmade wooden boxes filled with love letters exchanged between her maternal grandparents in the 1930s. She delicately cut the letters apart and interspersed them\, binding them with a Coptic stitch. To retain the couple’s privacy\, Rasmussen cut the pages small enough that significant content couldn’t be read by others. She then placed the book inside one of the wooden boxes crafted by her grandfather\, in the twisted form of an infinity symbol\, to suggest that the couple might continue their communion from life to death. \nMembers of the award committee praised the project as “playful\, clever\, and reverential in its reference to the art of love letters\, 17th century fashion\, stitching\, and symbolism.” Said one judge\, “the classical essence in Rasmussen’s piece gives way to an avant-garde play on the notion of a book\, with the written letters rendered inaccessible\, untouchable and unreadable…and yet\, the narrative\, the history\, and the intimacy are mysteriously palpable.” \nErica Spitzer Rasmussen is an artist who creates handmade paper garments\, neckware and small editions of hand-bound books. She received her BFA and MFA at the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis)\, which included coursework in Mexico and Greece. Her current work explores issues of identity and corporeality. Rasmussen is a recipient of an Artist’s Assistance Fellowship (1999) and an Artist’s Initiative Grant (2015) from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Other professional highlights include a papermaking residency in Vienna\, Austria (2010)\, a solo exhibition in Mexico City\, Mexico (2012)\, and a bookbinding residency in Venice\, Italy (2016). Her work has been featured in such publications as FiberArts magazine\, Surface Design Journal\, American Craft magazine\, Hand Papermaking magazine\, and the Huffington Post. Rasmussen teaches studio arts as a full professor at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul\, Minnesota. Her artwork is exhibited and collected internationally. Visit her website. \nFor more information on Erica and to view past winners\, please visit our Minnesota Book Artist Award page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n
