SUMMARY:Twin Cities Zine Fest
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT TCZF\nThe Twin Cities Zine Fest is an annual celebration of zines and self publishing in the Twin Cities and beyond. TCZF aims to sustainably support self publishing and the DIY ethic in our communities\, with an intersectional focus on politically and socially engaged zines\, community partnership\, and amplifying the voices of those who have been historically unheard.\n\n\nThe Twin Cities Zine Fest has taken place (nearly) annually since 2004. You can find more information about the history of the fest from 2004 through the present. \nFAQ  \nWhat’s a zine? \nA zine (pronounced “zeen\,” like magazine) is a noncommercial\, small-circulation work that is self-published. Zines can be handwritten\, hand drawn\, typewritten\, or computer printed\, and are usually photocopied and bound with staples. They’re a part of DIY (Do It Yourself) culture; zine creators (“zinesters”) are motivated by passion and the desire for self-expression\, not making a profit. Zines can consist of any genre you can imagine: they can be personal or educational or humorous or politically controversial\, featuring topics such as art\, music\, history\, culture\, and more. A common feature that zines share is that they’re outside the mainstream—by reading a zine\, you’re probably hearing from someone who doesn’t have access to traditional publishing. Importantly\, zines provide unfettered access to often underrepresented voices\, including those of young people\, poor people\, people with disabilities\, and people of color. \nWhat can I expect at TCZF? \nA zine fest is any place people gather to sell\, trade\, and talk about zines. At TCZF\, we’ll have about 70 people selling their zines. It’s free for anyone to attend and it’s a great way to support the local zine scene. Bring some cash and get ready to be inspired to create your own zine! \nHow can I help? \nOne of the best ways you can help TCZF is to spread the word—follow us on social media and let others know about the fest. We’re very interested in community partnerships with like-minded organizations. Sponsorship allows us to keep TCZF free to attendees and to maintain a sustainable event for years to come. And we’re always looking for new volunteers and organizers! Please get in touch!

SUMMARY:Illuminate the Lock: Returning the River (3 nights)
DESCRIPTION:Illuminate the Lock: Returning the River \nA night of poetry\, projection\, and music illuminates a future where both rivers and people are liberated\, where we celebrate wildness\, and where we practice reciprocal relationships between all bodies of water\, including one another’s. \nReturning the River tells the story of a daughter born into a time of walls whose life is intrinsically linked to the life of a paddlefish. Participants will take in visual projections on the water by Mike Hoyt\, a soundscape composed by Dameun Strange and a libretto by Molly Van Avery sung and spoken by performers above and below the lock chamber. Come listen and sing along. Hold water drawn up from below\, imbue it with blessings for descendants\, and then pour it back into the river to make its way towards liberation. \nPresented as part of Illuminate the Lock by Northern Lights.mn\, Mississippi Park Connection\, the National Park Service with support from St. Anthony Falls Heritage Board and the US Army Corps of Engineers.

SUMMARY:World Car Free Day
DESCRIPTION:Launched in 1996\, World Car-Free Day is celebrated in over 1\,500 cities around the world by encouraging sustainable commuting. Minneapolis joined the celebration in 2016 when nearly 1\,800 downtown commuters pledged to go “car-free” for a day\, and improve their commute. With a little transportation coaching\, commuters kept their cars at home and used transit\, bicycled\, carpooled\, walked\, or teleworked. \nMinneapolis celebrates World Car-Free Day 2018 on Friday\, September 21st. Move Minneapolis demonstrates just how easy\, inexpensive and fast car-free commuting can be. Commuters can enter to win a bicycle by sharing their commuting story.  Employers can vie for the “Best Car-Free Workplace” award. \nMORE INFORMATION
