SUMMARY:Minneapolis' iconic Grain Belt sign will light up again Dec. 30
DESCRIPTION: Photo: CARLOS GONZALEZThe historic Grain Belt Beer sign on the Minneapolis riverfront.\n\n\nThe Grain Belt Beer sign has been dark for years\, but is ready to shine again. \n\nBy Aimee Blanchette : Star Tribune : DECEMBER 1\, 2017\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of Minneapolis’ most recognizable signs\, the giant Grain Belt Beer bottle cap\, will finally shine bright again on Dec. 30. And you can help bring the relic back to life by purchasing one of the LED light bulbs.\n\n\n\nIn a Facebook post this week\, the August Schell Brewing Co. (which owns the landmark alongside the Hennepin Avenue bridge) said: \n“If you are interested in being a part of the action\, we will be offering a limited number of commemorative packages in which you can buy a bulb! Along with a certificate stating which letter you helped to restore\, you will also receive a T-shirt and porcelain Grain Belt sign.” \nThe package costs $100. \nThe New Ulm beer company bought the sign 15 years ago and there’s been a push to restore it ever since. The refurbishing process included replacing the neon tubes and 1\,100 incandescent light bulbs with LED lights. \nThe sign was originally placed over the Marigold Ballroom at 13th Street and Nicollet Mall\, now the Hyatt Regency Hotel. In 1950\, it was moved to its current location along the riverfront. The sign was lit\, then dark and re-lit several times over the years\, but hasn’t been illuminated since 1996.

SUMMARY:TESTIFY exhibit at Minneapolis Central Library\, January 8-February 6
DESCRIPTION:Football Hall of Famer and former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page\, along with Diane Sims Page\, Executive Director of the Page Education Foundation\, will publicly present TESTIFY\, a preview of their collection of Americana. The wide-ranging exhibit will feature art and artifacts from pivotal eras in American history while also providing a platform for visitors to share their thoughts\, feelings and personal experiences. \nThe free exhibit will be open January 8-February 6\, in Cargill Hall at Minneapolis Central Library. \nInspired by the recent resurgence of racial tension in our country\, TESTIFY gives context and definition to the conversation\, serving as a reminder of the history that brings us to today. \n“Before reconciliation there must be truth – and the truth can be ugly\,” said Justice Page. “But we cannot be reconciled and move forward if an increasingly louder group of people continue to deflect\, minimize and sweep history under the rug.” \nTESTIFY’S message of hope\n“At a time when the past seems ever more present\, the 100-plus objects in the exhibit will juxtapose artifacts from our often-painful\, shared history with inspiring imagery and works of art that help us rise above it\,” said Diane Page. “My hope is that by coming to grips with our past we can come together in the future.” \nObjects in the exhibit include: \n\nA slave collar used in Virginia in the 1820s. This brutal artifact is a sharp contrast to the irreverent depictions of slaves that soon flooded into popular culture.\nAn Abraham Lincoln funeral banner from 1865. The declaration “Our Country Shall Be One Country” greeted the funeral procession as it carried the slain president across the country.\nWorks by Carrie Mae Weems\, Charles White and Clementine Hunter\, which reclaim the African-American narrative and reflect a strong\, specific and beautiful history of self-representation.\n\nBe moved\nThe exhibit will also include a “Testification Station\,” an interactive display in front of a massing of Jim Crow-era signage and memorabilia\, where visitors will be invited to testify to their experiences on a judgment-free platform. \nThe public is invited to an opening viewing and reception\, sponsored by the Friends of the Hennepin County Library\, on Thursday\, January 11\, 7 to 8 p.m.\, at Minneapolis Central Library. \nThe exhibit was curated by the Pages in conversation with local curatorial consultants\, and is presented with the support of the Friends of the Hennepin County Library\, the National Football League\, the Minnesota Vikings\, The McKnight Foundation\, the Pohlad Family Foundation\, the Minneapolis Foundation and Robins Kaplan LLP. \nThe Diane and Alan Page Collection\nThe Diane and Alan Page Collection is a selection of art and artifacts that paints a portrait of race relations and representation in the 19th through 21st centuries. Gathered by Diane and Alan Page over decades of civic engagement and very personal work in their community\, the collection reflects their belief that even as we face the most painful aspects of our past so that they will not be repeated\, we must also find bright moments of transcendence that point another way forward. Justice Alan Page describes the significance of the collection in a recent episode of the Givens Foundation’s Black Market Reads podcast. \nAlan Page addresses difficult questions\nNFL Hall of Famer and former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page will present a talk titled “TESTIFY: It’s Not About the Flag or the Anthem\, It’s About Justice.” The address will respond to the controversy surrounding NFL protests and will attempt to shift the focus from whether player protests are appropriate back onto the underlying issue of racial justice. \nThe event will be held Wednesday\, January 31\, 2 to 4 p.m.\, at Pohlad Hall\, 2nd floor\, Minneapolis Central Library\, 300 Nicollet Mall\, Minneapolis. \nFilm screenings explore Page’s life story\nNFL Films chronicles Alan Page’s life in “Black Star Risen\,” a film produced by David Plaut. As a player\, Page redefined the defensive tackle position in pro football and made the Hall of Fame – only to leave the game behind for a new career in law and education. Another film\, “A Football Life: Alan Page” is a documentary about Page’s journey in sports and beyond. \nBoth movies will be screened in Pohlad Hall\, Minneapolis Central Library on 3 consecutive days: Thursday\, February 1-Saturday\, February 3\, 3-5 p.m. \nRecommended Books\n\nBlack Art and Memorabilia: Representations of Race\nThe Courts\, The Constitution and Race

SUMMARY:The Mill Yard at Stonebridge Lofts Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:“Nature: In the Eye of the Beholder” \n EVENT DATES: \nOpening and Reception Saturday\, January 13\, 2:00-5:00PM \nExhibit runs January 13 to March 31 \nFIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: \nFacebook:  The Mill Yard – Art Collective at Stonebridge Lofts \nTwitter:  @TheMillYardMpls \nDESCRIPTION: \nWe will present the work of eight artists in response to the theme Nature: In the Eye of the Beholder: \nBevie Labrie (painting)\nOwen Brown (painting)\nRichard James Nelson (printmaking)\nJulie Carson (photography)\nMarilyn Cuellar (graphite) \nOpening reception only: Potters Ernest Miller\, Nick Earl and Audra Smith \nThe Mill Yard at Stonebridge Lofts \nThe Mill City. Residents celebrate our area’s industrial heritage of the mighty Mississippi River and the mills. Today\, what we see are the most recognizable Minneapolis landmarks. However\, this is only part of the story. Rail lines were key to Minneapolis’ growth\, and were particularly integral to the Mill District\, bringing in wheat and timber and shipping out flour and lumber. We also honor the history of the mills\, the reason for the rail yard’s existence.  The Mill Yard aims to be both a gathering place for art and artists and a conduit by which art can be shared with and disseminated into the wider community. \nThe Mill Yard at Stonebridge Lofts thanks Luke Kleckner\, Condo Development and Sales\, for his generous sponsorship. \nContact us at: TheMillYard.Stonebridge@gmail.com \nGALLERY AND ARTIST DETAILS: \nBevie Labrie\,  “Hundreds of days and nights spent in nature over the course of my life have imbedded the colors\, textures\, smells and intricacies of my natural surroundings into my mind’s eye.  Each of these paintings were completed from a very intuitive\, expressive place inside of me.” \nOwen Brown\, “These works were painted during a residency I received last year in the south of France\, in the little village of Pampelonne.  The French countryside was beautiful\, low hills\, small fields\, rivers and streams\, copses of wood\, barns and tiny storerooms. The sun was spellbinding on the earth.” \nRichard James Nelson\, “My woodblock prints are inspired by the Inuit and Japanese printmaking and echo the spiritualness of nature.” \nJulie Carson\, “On any given day\, you will find me scouring the ground looking for objects\, patterns and colors to photograph. Photography captures and holds the moment to draw upon later.  No matter where I go\, I find ideas in a rusted trash can\, leaf or  flower.”  \nMarilyn Cuellar\, “I find my vision in the details of life. My art brings out the subtle details in its subjects\, creating a picture of life more particular than the fleeting glance with which we normally look at the world. “  \nErnest Miller\, “As a maker\, inspiration comes from field landscape\, farm implements\, and architectural features such as barns found in the Midwest as starting points for ceramic vessels and glaze surfaces. Observations of source material may be interpreted literally or sometimes abstracted using elements to complement functional or sculptural forms.” \nNick Earl\, “I am continually fascinated by the softness and reception of the clay from which my pots are made. These qualities translate into the finished pieces\, objects that will hopefully enrich the regular ceremonies of life. I have a strong interest in art history and I try to exhibit the strength and beauty I see in old pots in my own work.” \nAudra Smith\, “My goal is to make well-made\, utilitarian pottery. I continually explore color\, pattern\, space\, and shape in the surface decoration\, all of which inform the ongoing discovery of my personal language as a ceramic artist.” \n

SUMMARY:Traffic Zone: An exhibition of new portraits by Kristie Bretzke
DESCRIPTION:Image: Kristie Bretzke\, Coal Room (BH)\, 2017\, Oil on linen\, 30 x 30 in. \nWhen: January 8 – February 16\, 2018 \nGallery hours: Monday–Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and by appointment \nFree and open to the public \nTraffic Zone Gallery presents Kristie Bretzke: Coal Room\, an exhibition of new psychological portraits by this Minneapolis-based artist. Kristie Bretzke’s portraits are simple\, quiet and introspective. Her focus is specific and personal. Her current exhibition\, Coal Room\, features portraits inspired by the moody\, cool light of the basement coal room at an artist retreat on the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland. This exhibition is a culmination of many years of intense study and obsessive observation. Bretzke’s work has been described as strikingly straightforward and classical\, but her slightly voyeuristic perspective lends a modern edge. \nArtist Biography \nKristie Bretzke is a painter and sculptor with a BFA degree from the University of Minnesota. Kristie has had solo exhibitions at Groveland Gallery\, XYandZ Gallery\, Premier Gallery\, and the Traffic Zone Gallery\, all in Minneapolis. Kristie has participated in numerous group exhibitions\, including Winfield Gallery in California and Kaiping Art Museum in Kaiping\, China. She has been an artist-in-residence at the Kunstlerhaus in Salzburg\, Austria\, CAMAC in Marnay sur Seine\, France and Palazzo Rinaldi in Noepoli\, Italy. Kristie is currently represented by Groveland Gallery in Minneapolis. \nMission Statement: Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art supports the work of mid-career professional artists with high-quality\, affordable studios and the engagement of audiences with gallery exhibitions\, open studio events\, art classes and workshops.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations MINNEAPOLIS: Turkey – A Partner in Crisis (Minneapolis Central Library)
DESCRIPTION:Of all NATO allies\, Turkey represents the most daunting challenge for the Trump administration. In the wake of a failed military coup in July 2016\, the autocratic trend in Ankara took a turn for the worse. One year on\, an overwhelming majority of the population considers the United States to be their country’s greatest security threat. In this age of a worsening “clash of civilizations” between Islam and the West\, even more important than its place on the map is what Turkey symbolically represents as the most institutionally Westernized Muslim country in the world.\n\nJoin us for a thought-provoking conversation with former Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson as he discusses the current situation in Turkey and its impact on foreign policy. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmbassador Ross Wilson is a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council\, visiting lecturer in international affairs at the George Washington University\, and Global Minnesota board member. Over the course of a 30-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service\, he served as American ambassador to Turkey and Azerbaijan and held assignments at the U.S. Embassies in Moscow and Prague and at the U.S. Consulate General in Melbourne\, Australia. In Washington\, Ambassador Wilson held several positions including chief U.S. negotiator for the Free Trade Area of the Americas. In 2010-2014\, Ambassador Wilson served as director of the Atlantic Council’s Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center\, where he led the Council’s work on the former Soviet states\, Turkey\, and regional energy and economic issues and organized the Council’s annual Energy and Economic Summit in Istanbul. Ambassador Wilson received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota and master’s degrees from Columbia University and the U.S. National War College.  He is a recipient of the president’s Meritorious Service Award\, as well as numerous Department of State awards and honors. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is produced in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library. \n\n\n\n\nRegistration Time: 5:30 pm
