SUMMARY:Ward 3 Happy Hour- Location Change: Honey MPLS
DESCRIPTION:Join Council Member Steve Fletcher next Wednesday\, June 19 for a state legislative session debrief at our Ward 3 Happy Hour! We have moved the location to Honey MPLS. \nHe will be joined by Senator Kari Dziedzic\, and has invited Senator Bobby Joe Champion and Representatives Ray Dehn\, Diane Loeffler\, and Mohamud Noor. \nThis was a difficult legislative session at the state capitol\, with a lot of great policy and budget priorities blocked by the Senate. In the end\, the budget deal signed by Governor Walz was considered by many to be a draw\, but we still saw some important provisions pass into law. \nJoin us next week to discuss the legislative session and what it means for Minneapolis!

SUMMARY:Betula at Form+Content Gallery
DESCRIPTION:BETULA\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n June 27 – August 3\, 2019 \nForm + Content Gallery presents “Betula”\, exploring the tension of the unrestrained woods. There is both darkness and light\, fear and awe. By examining decaying birch trees\, Annie Irene Hejny questions the parallels between our human bodies and the natural world. \nOpening reception:  Thurs\, June 27th\, 6:00 – 8:00 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Statement \nLast September\, I spent two weeks at the Pine Needles Residency in Marine on St. Croix. Every day\, I walked in the woods and listened to the trees. In those woods\, language dissolved and I melted into the environment. I listened deeply and was called to a site along the trail where seven pieces of fallen birch bark lay on the forest floor. I respectfully gathered the decaying tree skins and carried them back to my art studio to continue our conversation.* \n The seven abstract artworks exhibited for “Betula” are directly inspired by the spirits of those fallen trees. Sitting with them\, I reflected on my past experiences in the woods. As a child\, the dark trees and the sounds of unseen life within the woods filled me with fear. During those years\, I was taught to obey the patriarchal systems that restricted my spirit and skewed my perception of the wild. As time has passed from childhood to adulthood\, my consciousness has altered and I am no longer a stranger in the woods. Today\, I practice looking directly into the shadows as an act of re-wilding my spirit. \n*I have borrowed the birch bark and I will return it to those woods. \n Artist Biography \nAnnie Irene Hejny studied at the University of St. Thomas and St. Catherine University\, earning a double-major B.A. in Elementary Education and Studio Art\, Summa Cum Laude. She has successfully completed nearly 50 commissioned projects for galleries\, private collections\, and public institutions\, locally and nationwide. The Women’s Art Institute (WAI) at St. Catherine University and the Women’s Art Resources of Minnesota (WARM) Mentor Program have been influential in her art journey. \nHer work has been included in many solo and group exhibitions (Minnesota Marine Art Museum\, Winona; Catherine G. Murphy Gallery\, St. Catherine University; Paul Whitney Larson Art Gallery\, University of Minnesota; Public Functionary\, Minneapolis; Minnesota State Fair Juried Exhibition; The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis and Galería Municipal Rosario Sanchez de Lozada in Querétaro\, México). Hejny was an artist-in-residence with Lanesboro Arts (2017)\, The Science Museum of Minnesota Pine Needles Residency (2018)\, and has been invited for a residency at the Grand Marais Art Colony (September 2019). She works at the Casket Arts Building in NE Minneapolis and is a current member of Form + Content Gallery.

SUMMARY:Peavey Plaza Grand Opening
DESCRIPTION:Grand opening event · Thursday\, July 18 at 11:30 a.m. \nThe City of Minneapolis is pleased to unveil the revitalized Peavey Plaza! \nPlease join elected officials and project partners for the ribbon cutting celebration of this downtown treasure. \n\nBuilt in 1974\, the plaza on Nicollet Mall designed by landscape architect M. Paul Friedberg is a notable example of modernist architecture. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. \nHighlights of the revitalization project include restoring the plaza’s fountains and water features\, adding more durable and environmentally friendly paving materials\, updating lighting and making design updates to ensure the plaza is compliant with the Americans with Disability Act. The City has a contract with the landscape architecture firm Coen+Partners and Global Specialty Contractors for the rehabilitation work. \nConstruction on the plaza began in May 2018 and the grand opening is planned for July 2019 to coincide with the Minnesota Orchestra summer season. The project is funded with $4 million from the City of Minneapolis\, $2 million from the State of Minnesota and $4 million in private donations raised by the Minneapolis Downtown Council and Green Minneapolis\, a not-for-profit multi-project conservancy. \nThe Peavey Plaza revitalization project team held more than 50 meetings in the last year to gather feedback from a variety of stakeholders\, including residents\, safety specialists\, historic preservationists and accessibility representatives\, among others. \nPlease note: If you are interested in information about permits\, please contact Green Minneapolis at info@greenminneapolis.org or 904.404.2669.
