SUMMARY:Open Book Takeover Open House - Amos Paul Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:Open Book Takeover\nMinnesota Center for Book Arts is honored to host Amos Paul Kennedy\, Jr. as printer-in-residence for the entire month of July. Through generous funding from The Joyce Foundation\, Amos will lead a series of work sessions at MCBA where participants from community organizations across the Twin Cities will learn to print signage by hand. The prints will be featured in an exhibition spanning the entire 55\,000 square-foot Open Book facility as a building-wide “takeover.”   \nThis project uses the Open Book building as a central artery for distribution\, every wall covered with prints and placards with messages from the communities we’re working with. This work is about awakening within the masses the art that is already there. He uses letterpress printing and antique wood type to express his socio-political views about such topics as the vulnerability of children\, his African heritage\, and community activism. Much of his work centers around literary works by people of cultural heritage and civil rights activists\, raising questions of race\, class\, and equality in American society. As a public artist\, his art is not only the created work\, but also the process of facilitating engagement. \nThis programming is presented in conjunction with the 2017 Book Art Biennial\, Shout Out: Community Intervention\, Independent Publications\, and Alternative Distribution\, and is made possible through the Joyce Awards\, a grant-funded program through the Joyce Foundation that supports artists of color in major Great Lakes cities. The Chicago-based foundation has awarded nearly $3 million to commission 55 new works since the program started in 2003.

SUMMARY:MINNEAPOLIS 4TH OF JULY GUIDE
DESCRIPTION:Consider this the be-all end-all of everything that is\, was and will be for your 4th of July in Minneapolis. We guarantee that if you read this comprehensive\, expert-compiled list that you’ll have a day worthy of your name being etched into the history books next to the country’s most patriotically-awesome people. Click the options below for everything that is 4th of July in Minneapolis. \nPlaces to Watch Fireworks   |   Events in Minneapolis   |   Social Sharing   |   Events Outside Minneapolis \nPLACES TO WATCH FIREWORKS: \nPLEASE NOTE: The sound of fireworks may trigger the nervous system of dogs and other pets with hearing sensitivity\, causing them to become anxious or afraid. If you intend to bring your dog to an outdoor Minneapolis celebration\, make sure they are on a leash and close by during the fireworks display to ensure that they do not run away. \n\n\n \n1. Stone Arch Bridge: This is the absolute best place to see the skies. Watching fireworks on the Stone Arch Bridge is like watching history\, as the bridge is a link to the rich past of Minneapolis. You’ll be right above the Mississippi River and right below the action. Get here early though\, it fills up quick!\nMake it a day downtown and plan pre-firework activities! \n*Dogs allowed \n\n \n2. Gold Medal Park: One of the most underrated spots in downtown Minneapolis\, Gold Medal Park offers a more traditional viewing experience. Throw a blanket on the grass\, toss a ball around and gaze up at the fireworks while you lie down and relax. \nINSIDER TIP: “Bring bug spray.” -Scott \n\n \n3. Mill City Museum: Watching fireworks from the Mill City Museum Observation Deck is as close to a VIP setting as you’ll get. Only 50 people get access\, and you have to pay ($35)\, but the view is absolutely worth the cost. As an added bonus\, you get admission into the museum beforehand. \nINSIDER TIP: “If you’re reading this\, then you need to stop what you’re doing and order tickets NOW! These tickets go very quickly and the view is sublime.” -Kristen \nExplore the Flour Milling Capital of the World \n\n \n4. Guthrie Endless Bridge: A more unconventional place to watch fireworks\, true\, but it has that same VIP feel that the Mill City Museum Observation Deck has. You’ll be off the ground and closer to the action\, and you’ll have a completely unobstructed view of the fireworks. \nCheck out some of the best local talent in Minneapolis \n\n \n5. Restaurant Rooftops: A lot of people don’t generally think of restaurants as prime places to watch fireworks\, but we say\, “Why not?!” You’re up in the air\, you’ll have a great view AND there are people that will serve you food and drinks.  Check out more about Minneapolis’ best outdoor dining locations and different brews and bites to try before and after the fireworks show! \n\n \n6. Lake Calhoun: Parks are great\, and buildings are very cool places to get closer to the fireworks. But\, if you want the most authentic 4th of July “I LOVE AMERICA” experience\, Lake Calhoun is where you want to be. Grill out\, play some volleyball\, kayak/paddle on the lake and chill on the beach while you get a great view of the downtown fireworks. Make a night of it! Hang out in Uptown before and after the fireworks show for more entertainment and cuisine. \n*Dogs allowed everywhere but the beaches

SUMMARY:Global Water Dances - Dancing for Safe Water Everywhere
DESCRIPTION:Choreographer(s): \nLori Mercil\nShe is a BFA trained dancer\, choreographer\, & instructor who has been part of the Twin Cites dance scene for the last 20 years\, working with many local artists and groups\, including Hauser Dance\, Becky Heist\, Link Vostok\, Una Setia\, Marciano Silva Dos Santos\, MotionArt\, Off-Leash Area\, Young Dance\, and Marylee Hardenbergh on many site-specific works in the area\, including as project manager for Solstice River XIX/Global Water Dance 2015. Her own work has been shown at Dances at the Lake\, Hauser Dance\, Kinetic Kitchen\, & Solstice River. Lori currently dances with Christopher Watson Dance Company\, where her work was shown in last year’s 25th Anniversary Show\, and is one of 7 other choreographers presenting work in the upcoming “16 Feet: Assorted Dances” being presented at Intermedia Arts June 8-10th. Lori is thrilled to be part of Global Water Dances again this year! \nRae Eden:\nRae Eden Frank trained with the Minnesota Dance Theater before pursuing a career in social justice. Rae currently works in the environmental health field\, and is in training to be a dance movement therapist. Rae offers community workshops using embodied movement as the medium for communication. Rae sees nature and dance as her healers and can be found dancing on the street corners or wandering in the forest. Rae is also a ritual artist and priestess of public rituals\, including the fire dance performance at an annual Brighid Festival. In 2012\, Rae was the recipient of two Irrigate Placemaking grants to develop “The Flowering Dance Project”. When not dancing\, Rae can be found spending time with her two daughters and grandson or picking up litter along the freeway. This is her fourth Global Water Dances. \nHistory of Site and Related Water Issues: \nMinnesota is home to more than 10\,000 lakes and more than 90\,000 miles of rivers and streams. Many of these waterways are threatened by pollution and agricultural practices. An estimated 40 percent of the state’s lakes and streams are polluted making them unsafe to fish from or swim in. These factors led to negative impacts on the quality of life in Minnesota. \nThe Stone Arch Bridge is a former railroad bridge crossing the Mississippi River at Saint Anthony Falls in downtown Minneapolis\, Minnesota. It is the second oldest bridge crossing the Mississippi and the only arched bridge made of stone on the entire length of the Mississippi River. \nThe word Mississippi comes from Messipi\, the French rendering of the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe or Algonquin) name for the river\, Misi-ziibi (Great River). St. Paul and Minneapolis rely on the Mississippi River as its source water supply. \nMusic: \nLive drumming \nThe Performance: \n16 to 20 dancers will perform in the center of the Stone Arch Bridge to live drumming. \n \nEnvironmental Impact: \nRaising awareness about general water issues and local concerns\, and giving audience members specific information about how they can help improve water quality in the area by providing access to information tables by local water organizations at the site on the day of the performance. \nDirections to the Site of Performance: \nGoogle directions by geographical coordinates \nEmail for more information: \n\nlmercil.dancer@gmail.com\nrae8eden@hotmail.com\n\nHow can I get involved? \nDance\, drum\, water organization informational tabling\, audience participation. \nLocal Website: \nwww.globalsiteperformance.org
