SUMMARY:Get free pizza at Black Sheep this weekend
DESCRIPTION:Emily Cassel : City Pages : October 18. 2018 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nEwe won’t want to miss it.Black Sheep Pizza \n\nQuestion: What’s better than the best pizza in the Twin Cities? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnswer: The best pizza in the Twin Cities\, but also\, you don’t have to pay for it.\n\n\nBlack Sheep Pizza\, makers of the magical\, just-charred\, coal-fired crusts you dream about\, turns 10 this month. And like any good birthday party host\, they’re providing the pizza: From noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday\, October 21st\, you can walk in and snag a totally free 12-inch pie. \nThe offer is shockingly catch-free\, too\, good for any pizza on the menu except the #7 (those oyster mushrooms demand your dollars\, thank you very much) or a build-your-own two-topping option. It’s up for grabs at both the Minneapolis and St. Paul Black Sheep locations\, and there’ll be happy hour drink deals throughout the full six-hour window to boot. \nNo purchase necessary—but they are going to limit you to one per person. Those monsters. \nKind of hard to believe it’s been a decade since we were first cooing over “the most perfect pizza crust in the metro area\,” as the shop now slings those crusts beneath its scribbly sheep-logo sign at two Minneapolis locations (the North Loop original and an annex on Eat Street)\, one in St. Paul\, and another in the MSP Airport. \nAnyway! Mark your calendars for Sunday accordingly\, or RSVP on Facebook and let ol’ Zuckerberg do the reminding for you.

SUMMARY:New Exhibition at Minnesota Center for Book Arts Explores the Storytelling Power of Quilts
DESCRIPTION:Quilt\, Not Quilt: The Afterlife is a new exhibition at Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA)\, on view from October 12th - December 2nd in the Open Book Cowles Literary Commons. This exhibition features artwork that repurposes old\, tattered quilts into new forms while still preserving the quilts’ heritage\, craftsmanship\, and legacy. The opening reception for Quilt\, Not Quilt will take place on Wednesday\, October 17 from 6-8pm. The reception includes an artist talk and poetry reading from 7-8pm in the Target Performance Hall on the second floor of Open Book\, as well as a meet and greet with the artists and poets. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. \nTwelve participating artists created paper\, poetry\, broadsides\, and other works from quilts\, drawing inspiration from the textiles themselves as well as from the stories they tell. The artists explored the political\, economic\, and social contexts surrounding the creation of the quilts\, making connections between the makers’ history and their work. The artwork created for the exhibition touches on themes of craftsmanship and labor\, scarcity and wealth\, and stories both recalled and forgotten. \nQuilt\, Not Quilt showcases artists from the MCBA community and beyond. Participating artists include Zoë Bird\, Katy Collier\, Tari “TJ” Goerlitz\, Georgia A. Greeley\, Darius Homayounpour\, Karen Kinoshita\, Dana LeMoine\, Rosa Maria de la Cueva Peterson\, Jerry McClelland\, Cathy Ryan\, Patty Wheeler Andrews\, and Morgan Grayce Willow. Each artist transformed their chosen quilt in unexpected and thought-provoking ways\, and the resulting exhibition both honors the practice of quilting and expands established notions about what it means to craft and make art. \nAs the largest and most comprehensive center of its kind in the nation\, Minnesota Center for Book Arts celebrates the book as a vibrant contemporary art form that takes many shapes. From the traditional crafts of papermaking\, letterpress printing\, and hand bookbinding to experimental artmaking and self-publishing techniques\, MCBA supports the limitless creative evolution of book arts through book arts workshops and programming for adults\, youth\, families\, K-12 students\, and teachers. MCBA is located in the Open Book building in downtown Minneapolis\, alongside partner organizations The Loft Literary Center and Milkweed Editions. To learn more\, visit www.mnbookarts.org. \n

SUMMARY:Art at 801 Gallery Presents it's 40th Show
DESCRIPTION:Work by artists Westy Copeland\, Shun Jie Yong\, Arianne Zager\nand Olli Johnson: \nTwo painters\, a photographer and a kinetic paper engineer. \nOpening reception Saturday\, October 13th\, 2018 from 6pm to 9pm\nOpening night music by Mike Michel\, Minnesota Music Academy award-winning songwriter\, guitarist\, and music educator. His music is upbeat\, melodic\, groove inspired and pop-oriented. MikeMichelMusic.com \nShow runs through January 2019\n801 Washington Avenue North\, Minneapolis\n(New parking ramp now on 10th Avenue and 3rd Street!!) \nWesty Copeland\nThe work of Westy Caswell Copeland is most often described as “whimsical\, happy” art. Her brightly colored paintings\, often depicting pensive women\, many with various animals on their heads\, strive to communicate a wise yet humorous look at life. Over 35 years of painting\, printing\, and collaging have turned Westy’s personal visions into a language of colors and layers that will leave you smiling.\nWestyCopeland.com \nShun Jie Yong\nShun is a second-generation Chinese immigrant from Malaysia and also a resident alien in the United States; he is a portrait photographer who documents immigrants and refugees in the United States and in Malaysia. His goal is to honor immigrants and refugees\, to have them present themselves as they want to be seen\, but not necessarily as we typically see them.\nShunJieYong.com \nArianne Zager\nHer large-scale pop surreal watercolor work represents a skewed depiction of feminine beauty. All of Arianne’s work is composed from natural waterways\, such as rivers and oceans from her travels to over 40 countries.\nArianneZager.com \nOlli Johnson\nShoots & Roots// A Forest in Four Stories is an interactive display of kinetic dioramas and paper sculpture that come to life with the turn of a crank. Using flat layers of cut paper in hree dimensions\, Olli whimsically illustrates the vertical layers of a forest in four distinct scenes. Olli is an aspiring paper engineer\, pop up book artist\, and maker of automata with a background in theater and puppetry.\nOliiMadeThis.com \nArt at 801 Gallery\, in 801 Lofts\, promotes art and music to neighborhood residents and art lovers thru periodic openings and gallery presentations. \nContact\nJan Elftmann\njanelftmann@gmail.com \nArt at 801 Gallery\n801 Washington Avenue North\, Minneapolis\nhttps://www.801washingtonlofts.org/art-at-801/

SUMMARY:ARTCRANK 2018
DESCRIPTION:ARTCRANK’s 2018 Minneapolis show will take place on Saturday\, October 13 at IDS Center. Staging a show in one of the most iconic buildings in Minneapolis is a far cry from our DIY bike shop roots\, but one thing remains the same: Affordable\, bike-inspired poster art created by local artists. This year’s edition of ARTCRANK features new bike-inspired posters created by more than 40 artists from around the Twin Cities. \nFor the fourth consecutive year\, ARTCRANK is teaming up with Fulton Brewing to provide adult refreshments and benefit a local nonprofit organization. A portion of proceeds from beer sales will benefit the Minnesota Cycling Federation and its programs that introduce kids to the sport of cycling\, let them try out racing for the first time\, and learn how to ride like pros. \nARTCRANK is also partnering with IDS Center — which is donating the space for the event — and the mpls downtown council to create a showcase of all the ways that cycling is transforming the downtown neighborhood\, from commuting to shopping to sightseeing. Show attendees will be encouraged to take advantage of the revamped\, Nicollet to arrive by bike\, with free valet bike parking near IDS Center’s Nicollet entrance provided by the Cultural Wellness Center’s My Bike Project\, another longtime ARTCRANK partner. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTISTS\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re proud to represent and support the work of these incredibly talented local artists. \nAdam Turman // Aleta Perez // Allan Peters // Amy Jo // Andria Chinander // Andy Wood // Anne Ulku // Brent Gale // Brian Geihl // Brooke Ekelund // Bruce Doscher // Courtney Thomas // Dana Kingery // Danielle Aba-Onu // David Schwen // Ellen Schofield // Erica Mathern // Erik T. Beyond the startling detail\, Jonathan applies his digital process in ways that transcend some accepted limitations of conventional film and digital imaging techniques—such as unwrapping a 360° room interior or presenting a very large group portrait that is viewable as individual portraits. These immersive prints grant the viewer permission to intuitively explore the scenes with a freedom not usually experienced with conventionally sized and shaped photographs. This exhibition is an opportunity to view these non-traditional images printed at mural scale. Previously these extremely large photographs were viewable only on-line using specialized server software jointly developed by Google\, NASA\, and CMU: https://jonathangross.art/#/trafficzone/. \n\n \nJonathan Gross\, Wallpaper (11′ 5″ X 2′) \nArtist Biography \nJonathan Gross has exhibited both 2D and 3D works in a number of group exhibitions at the Tychman Shapiro Gallery from 2013 through the present\, two group shows at Minneapolis College of Art and Design\, and in the 2017 Minnesota Fair Fine Arts Exhibition. This is his first solo show—and only the third time he will have on display large-scale prints using the digital imaging process with which he has been working since 2010. Gross also designs theater projections. He was a tour guide at the Walker Art Center for five years. \nMission Statement \nTraffic Zone Center for Visual Art supports the work of mid-career professional artists with high-quality\, affordable studios and the engagement of audiences with gallery exhibitions\, open studio events\, art classes and workshops. \n

SUMMARY:Nutz Oar Boltz at Underground Music Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Nutz Oar Boltz is the real deal when it comes to blues.  Led by front man Timmer Blue Horn\, the group is a seasoned bevy of skilled blues musicians.\n\nTimmer is the main man\, a fixture in the blues world of the northlands – a renowned singer\, songwriter\, and harp player who has played in blues bands since the last ice age receded.  Many remember Timmer from some of his former bands called Out of the Blue (OOTB)\, which ranged from biting electric strings with horns to acoustic roots guitars.  Many of Timmer’s original songs draw from the heartaches of his own life\, and his blues covers pay tribute to the great blues stars of yesteryear. \nTimmer has pulled together Nutz Oar Boltz as his current project – talented musicians who have graced an endless parade of dusty stages:  Greg Smokefish Lee (lead blues guitar)\, Craig Fingers Litsey (keyboards)\, Chris Flask (sax and guitar)\, Rattlesnake Richard (bass)\, and Joe Ride (drums). It’s the real deal. \n\n\n\n\n\n
