If you’re sticking around the Cities\, put this at the top of your list for Monday night: the Minnesota Orchestra’s free Symphony for the Cities concert at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis. The music starts at 8:30 p.m.\, the annualRed\, White and Boom! Fireworks at 10 along the river (thank you\, Minneapolis Park and Rec). \nThe program includes “The Star-Spangled Banner”; some Verdi\, Smetana\, Wagner\, and Rossini crowd-pleasers; Sousa’s “Foshay Tower Washington Memorial March”; music from John Williams’ scores for “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”; the “Armed Forces Salute” and the rousing finale\, Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.” Roderick Cox leads the band in a concert that lasts about an hour. Cox\, BTW\, who joined the Orchestra in April 2015\, is one of only two black conductors on staff at major U.S. symphony orchestras. (The other is Joseph Young at the Atlanta Symphony.)Thanks to Graydon Royce for that interesting fact. \nMonday’s concert will cap a week of free Symphony for the Cities concerts\, a 40-year tradition. This year’s series started last night in Hudson. SUMMARY:Global Conversations: The Rise of ISIS
DESCRIPTION:Born out of an umbrella organization of al-Qaeda in Iraq\, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) burst onto the international stage after it conquered Fallujah in December 2013. Since then\, the group has seized control of a number of critical strongholds in both countries and declared itself a caliphate. Still\, the question remains: what is ISIS\, and what danger does it present to today’s global community? \n\nMolly Hayes\, formerly with the U.S. Department of State\, will lead a discussion on these questions and more. \nMolly Hayes worked for the U.S. Department of State as an advisor on the Middle East\, and North Africa\, with an emphasis on counterterrorism and human rights issues. She served as the State Department’s counterterrorism advisor for East Africa; desk officer for Kenya\, Morocco\, Western Sahara\, Libya\, and Tunisia; and assistant to the Coordinator for Counterterrorism. She also served as deputy coordinator of the State Department’s Egypt Task Force during the 2011 Arab Spring. Molly holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Arabic from the University of Notre Dame and will pursue a mid-career policy degree at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs as a Thomas H.
