SUMMARY:Forum: Water Over the Dam
DESCRIPTION:St. Anthony Falls is the only waterfall on the Mississippi River\, the birthplace of Minneapolis and the centerpiece of the St. Anthony Falls Historic District. While the falls is often celebrated as a centerpiece of beauty and history for our City\, less recognized are the myriad demands on the water flowing over the falls\, including power generation and research into future ways to enhance and protect the Mississippi River. \nWater Over the Dam will present a discussion of the different ways that our community depends on water flowing over the falls. We’ll talk about the falls from the Native American perspective\, the industrial perspective\, the recreational perspective and the economic one. Come join us! Light refreshments will be provided. \nDoors open at 5:30\, with the program starting at 6.

SUMMARY:The Friends of the Mill District Singers Are Back!
DESCRIPTION:SUNDAY\, FEBRUARY 26\, 2017 AT 11:43AM | CLAUDIA KITTOCK | SHARE ARTICLE \n\nWe are Back! \nThe Friends of the Mill District Singers are back! We have been on a short hiatus\, but rehearsals begin again on Saturday\, March 4\, from 2:00-3:30 on the 8th floor of the Guthrie\, classrooms 1 and 2. \nWe are a group of neighbors\, with a roster of over 140 members. Our mission is to be a choir that is open to all and embraces the true diversity of our neighborhood. There is no charge to sing with us\, nor is there any talent requirement. Our director\, JD Steele\, will have you singing as you never have before. \nOur goal is to perform at community events at least twice each session. The Guthrie\, the American Academy of Neurology and First Covenant Church have already partnered with us to provide rehearsal space. \nThe choir has already performed at Holidazzle\, the MacPhail Music Matters Luncheon\, at the Guthrie before a performance of “A Christmas Carol” and sang “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” at a Minnesota Twins game. \n \nWe welcome you to join us for one rehearsal or for everyone. However\, be very careful. After one rehearsal\, the chances of being ‘hooked’ are very high!!!

The exhibition includes a large-scale installation of black & white photographs of 12 stones accompanied with narratives written by 6 contributors. Incorporated are stones from evocative locations as a D-Day Beach\, Ganges River\, Pompeii and a beloved Lake Superior cove. Each “story” tells a history or description of the landscape/geology and a personal reaction to each site. The exhibition also includes 2 suites of photogravure prints and an artist book that thematically reference the installation. The Here/Now There/Then photogravure suite was created during an artist residency at Izote Editions\, in Mexico\, with a unique edition of color photogravures hand-printed by the artist for this exhibition. \nArtist Statement\nStones have been an important part of my imagery\, an interest that began as a 20-year-old map drafter working with geologists.  Prehistoric megalithic locations have also been sources of inspiration\, with visits to sites leaving impressions of monumental scale and a vast sense of time. Stone Voices was created after a “pilgrimage” to Carnac\, France where 3000 Neolithic stones older than the pyramids are aligned. In my Stone Voices installation I’ve expanded the metaphor of “stone” beyond a reference of landscape/time\, to implying environments touched by human presence. Photographed stones reflect places of historic relevance: a D-Day Beach\, a cremation site on the Ganges River and the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Bernice Ficek-Swenson \n \nBernice Ficek-Swenson\, Stone Voices\, detail\nPigment print installation of 12 photographs with accompanying text : 60  x 98 in. \nArtist Biography\nMinneapolis based artist Bernice Ficek-Swenson is known for her work in copper plate photogravure and digital installations that explore the elemental forces of nature using stone\, ashes\, fire and water. She has exhibited internationally and has had artist residencies in Athens\, Greece\, Chicago\, Hong Kong\, Xalapa\, Mexico and Newfoundland. Ficek-Swenson’s work is included in public printmaking and photography collections including the Museum of Contemporary Photography @ Columbia Chicago\, Minneapolis Institute of Art\, Frederick Weisman Art Museum and the Polaroid Collection. In 2012 she received a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant and the CAS Excellence in Creative Activities at University of Wisconsin River Falls where she is a Professor of Art. Her photogravures will be exhibited in the 2017 World Print and the 2018 International Printmaking Biennial\, Duoro\, Portugal. \nTraffic Zone Mission Statement\nTraffic Zone Center for Visual Art supports the work of mid-career professional artists with high-quality\, affordable studios and the engagement of audiences with gallery exhibitions\, open studio events\, art classes and workshops.

DESCRIPTION:Free Fulton brew with $10 membership to AAA! \nGlobal climate change causes dramatic effect on the migration of living things — plant\, animal\, and insect alike. The effect on many human communities can be hugely destructive. Extreme weather events such as floods and years-long droughts become intertwined with political instability\, resulting in the forced mass movement people away from their homelands. \nAt this edition of AAA we hear from Northern Spark artists whose projects address the connections between climate and refugees through performative installations. They are joined in conversation by a local foreign policy affairs consultant who will provide contextual data on climate-based mass migrations globally. \nAAA: Anthropocene Awareness Association\, a sometimes club\, sometimes support group\, always happy hour to discuss issues related to the core ideas of the Northern Spark festival’s year-long theme: Climate Chaos | Climate Rising. SUMMARY:BERNICE FICEK-SWENSON: STONE VOICES – TRAFFIC ZONE CENTER FOR VISUAL ART
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of artworks by Bernice Ficek-Swenson\n\nSTONE VOICES\nPigment print installation of 12 photographs with accompanying text : 60  x 98 in.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLecture Presentation\nTuesday\, April 11\, 2017\, 6:30 – 8:00 pm\nContemporary Copper-plate Photogravure \nFree and open to the public\nExhibit showing — March 13 – April 14\nGallery is open Monday – Friday\, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm\nMetered parking on the street \n \nBernice Ficek-Swenson\, Stone Voices\, detail \nDescription\nTraffic Zone Gallery presents Stones Voices\, exhibition of artworks by Bernice Ficek-Swenson.

SUMMARY:New 46-Unit Housing Development In Downtown Minneapolis Aims To Transform Lives Of Homeless Youth
DESCRIPTION:April 10\, 2017 \n 5-story YouthLink & PPL partner project to provide housing and services for youth\, 18 – 24 \n MINNEAPOLIS\, Minn. (April 10\, 2017) – Downtown View\, a $17 million\, five-story partner development project with YouthLink and Project for Pride in Living (PPL) will begin construction next week to provide 46 units of high quality housing and supportive services for youth experiencing homelessness\, ages 18 – 24.  YouthLink\, which serves more than 2\,000 homeless youth every year\, can change the life trajectory for youth experiencing homelessness by connecting them to housing\, education\, employment\, mental and physical health support\, and other resources that eliminate suffering and dependence on social services. \nOn any given night\, 6\,000 young people are experiencing homelessness in Minnesota. Downtown View will support this population by providing critical units of housing and collaborating with nearly 30 agencies working to end youth homelessness. By transforming the individual lives of young people experiencing homelessness\, Downtown View will contribute in a significant and measurable way to reducing disparities\, lowering social-service costs\, and improving the workforce outlook across the Twin Cities region. \nDowntown View\, which will connect to YouthLink’s existing Minneapolis headquarters\, will provide a unique resource to residents in three key ways: by serving older youth; by focusing services on youths’ long-term goals; and by utilizing the wealth of services offered in YouthLink’s existing Youth Opportunity Center. The development will also include a Career Pathways Center\, a resident fitness area\, access to mental health support\, and employment/education navigation. \nAll of the $11.8 million in public funding has been secured to complement YouthLink’s $6 million comprehensive campaign\, which includes a lead gift of $500\,000 from the Pohlad Family Foundation.  Other major donations include: Buuck Family Fund of The Minneapolis Foundation\, Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association\, The Patrick & Aimee Butler Family Foundation\, Ronald and Joan Cornwell\, and the John and Denise Graves Family Foundation. \n“We know investing in young people experiencing homelessness has long-term positive outcomes for both the young person and for our community\,” says Dr. Heather Huseby\, executive director of YouthLink.  “With the creation of 46 much-needed units of safe\, supportive housing\, expansion of the Youth Opportunity center\, and a Career Pathways Center\, we will increase economic and education opportunities and equity for young people.” \nDesigned by UrbanWorks Architecture\, the unique housing project will be developed by PPL and built by Greiner Construction.  Groundbreaking ceremonies will be held at 4:00 p.m.\, Tuesday April 18 at the new site\, located at 41 N. 12th St. in downtown Minneapolis. \nConstruction is expected to be completed by late 2017 before cold weather season begins. \nAbout YouthLink \nFor over 40 years\, YouthLink (www.youthlinkmn.org) has provided a safe and supportive refuge\, along with the resources needed by young people experiencing homelessness. Last year\, more than 2\,200 young people from the Twin Cities accessed YouthLink—which is also home of the Youth Opportunity Center (YOC)—in downtown Minneapolis. At the YOC\, YouthLink and over 30 community partner agencies come together to provide a holistic array of services to help young people become educated\, employable\, and stably housed. \n About Project for Pride in Living \nFounded in 1972\, Project for Pride in Living (PPL) empowers thousands of individuals and families with lower incomes to reach self-reliance through affordable housing\, employment readiness and job placement. We work together with participants to create vibrant\, equitable\, and diverse communities filled with residents who have achieved stability and are contributing to the regional economy. Last year alone\, more than 14\,200 people moved into affordable housing\, earned higher incomes\, improved their academic skills and gained economic independence with the help of PPL. SUMMARY:Portraits: Looking Forward\, Looking Back - Zamya Theater Project
DESCRIPTION:Did you know seniors and youth ages 18-24 are the fastest growing populations experiencing homelessness in Minnesota? zAmya brings youth and seniors together from a variety of backgrounds to tell their stories and get creative in this variety showcase to generate public will to fix this problem! \nJoin zAmya as we share with you the fruits of the last several months of theater workshops at St. Stephen’s Human Services and Ebenezer Park Apartments. Witness as 20 seniors share nuggets of incredible experience\, an underprepared camper encounters a seasoned river dweller\, a baseball player learns an unexpected lesson\, three bag lady’s go into a thrift store and transform\, and together we build a machine of health and wealth. \nzAmya\, a Sanskrit word that means\, “aiming at peace”\, supports St. Stephens’ mission to end homelessness by increasing awareness and understanding through community-based theater. Led by local artist\, Maren Ward\, zAmya has created and toured 13 original full length theater productions at numerous locations throughout Minnesota including the Guthrie Theater in September\, 2016 of Home Street Home Minneapolis. \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. \n** ASL Interpreted
