SUMMARY:Lisa Nankivil: Paintings and New Media Prints (Traffic Zone)
DESCRIPTION:                                                     Lisa Nankivil\, Rubicon\, 2015\, 48 x 54 in.\, oil on canvas \nOpening Reception (open to the public)\nExhibit showing from September 9 – October 21\nMonday – Friday\, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm and by appointment \nTraffic Zone Gallery presents Lisa Nankivil: Paintings and New Media Prints\, a radiant selection of traditionally created oil paintings\, and archival pigment prints composed on an iPad. Nankivil’s abstract paintings feature richly hued bands of color and luminous intervals of black and white. The paintings\, with their ambiguous spaces and surface texture\, engage the viewer from a distance. The smaller\, intricate digital prints invite closer contemplation of their architecture. Riffing on her signature stripes as well as paint as a subject\, Nankivil documents and uploads images of her painted marks\, layering them with original photography\, and drawing. On how it feels to work digitally after so many years in front of a 12 ft. wall easel\, Nankivil laughingly admits\, “In a perfect world the iPad would be at least eight feet wide.” \nArtist Biography \nA native of Minnesota and graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design\, contemporary artist Lisa Nankivil is widely recognized for her distinctive linear abstractions. She exhibits her paintings and original prints nationally and internationally\, most recently in Metes and Bounds\, McCormick Gallery\, Chicago; 2016 Delta National Small Print Exhibition\, Bradbury Art Museum\, Arkansas; Art on the Plains XII\, Plains Art Museum\, Fargo ND.; and New Hampshire Institute of Art’s Biennial 2015\, New Hampshire Institute of Art. Nankivil’s work is found in public and private collections including the Minneapolis Institute of Art\, Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum\, Minneapolis; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art\, Arizona; Borusan Contemporary Museum\, Istanbul\, Turkey; Minnesota Museum of American Art\, St.Paul\, MN; Surdna Foundation\, NY\, New York; and the US Department of State\, Washington\, DC \nTraffic Zone Center for Visual Art Mission \nTraffic Zone Center for Visual Art supports the work of mid-career professional artists with high-quality\, affordable studios and the engagement of audiences with gallery exhibitions\, open studio events\, art classes and workshops. \ntrafficzoneart@gmail.com \n

Those interested in participating can sign up free of charge at www.ExploreDTLiving.com. \n“Downtown’s residential growth is as thriving as ever\, and as we strive to reach 70\,000 residents as part of The 2025 Plan we know showcasing the benefits of living in the downtown area is crucial\,” said Steve Cramer\, President & CEO of the Minneapolis Downtown Council and Downtown Improvement District. “Thanks to the Explore Downtown Living committee and leadership\, more people are getting a chance to see first-hand what life could be like for them in the heart of our city.” \nThose participating in Explore Downtown Living can enjoy free parking options at designated locations\, and they can find their destinations through an interactive map on ExploreDTLiving.com. SUMMARY:Festival Palomino moving to Hall's Island in Mpls. from Canterbury Park
DESCRIPTION:By Chris Riemenschneider : Star Tribune : AUGUST 30\, 2016 \n\n\n\nThe last big outdoor music festival of the year will now be the second such event to take over Hall’s Island near downtown Minneapolis this year.\n\n\nFestival Palomino — the third annual eclectic rock and roots music fest helmed by Trampled by Turtles — will now be held in the riverfront park on Sept. 17\, a change in locations from Canterbury Park in Shakopee. \nThe switch was purportedly made due to recent rain storms in the Shakopee area\, which delayed construction of a new festival site inside the horse track. No doubt\, Hall’s Island was also seen as an advantageous substitute\, thanks to its central\, accessible location and the good reception the park received as the host of Wilco’s concert two weekends ago with Kurt Vile. \nFirst Avenue’s staff\, co-organizers of the festival\, praised the city’s park staff for allowing the late change. The club also put together the Wilco concert and last summer’s Alabama Shakes and Father John Misty double-header. \n“We’re incredibly thankful to the Minneapolis Park Board for allowing us to move to such a beautiful location\,” First Avenue general manager Nate Kranz said in the club’s announcement. “While we love working with our partners at Canterbury Park\, we both agreed it was in the best interest of the fans to move the festival this year.” \nNearly everything else about Festival Palomino will stay the same. Well\, except for the chance to hit the card room to play blackjack or do some off-track betting\, like at Canterbury. In addition to Trampled by Turtles — who haven’t played in town since last year’s festival — the Palomino 2016 lineup includes Dan Auerbach’s new-ish band the Arcs\, Andrew Bird\, Jake Bugg\, Houndmouth\, Frightened Rabbit\, Elephant Revival\, the Cactus Blossoms\, Margaret Glaspy and many more spread over two main stages and a smaller third stage. Tickets are on sale for $52 general admission or $151 for VIP viawww.FestivalPalomino.com. \n\nPhoto: Festival Palomino’s dueling stages will be erected on Hall’s Island next month instead of Canterbury Park. / Aaron Lavinsky\, Star Tribune
