SUMMARY:10th Annual Give to the Max Day
DESCRIPTION:10th Annual Give to the Max Day is November 15\nKIM ESLINGER : Mill City Times : November 11\, 2018\n\nA letter from Jake Blumberg\, Executive Director\, GiveMN: \nDear friends\, \nGenerosity isn’t new to Minnesota. We take pride in our reputation of civic engagement\, near the top of national lists of highest voter turnout and charitable giving year after year. \nWhen we started Give to the Max Day in 2009\, it was meant to be a one-time event to help raise awareness for the new GiveMN.org. But after $14 million was donated in just 24 hours\, we knew something truly special had just happened in Minnesota. \n10 Years of Give to the Max Day from GiveMN on Vimeo. \nYou’ve help to build Minnesota’s giving holiday from the ground up. More than 300\,000 generous people like you have given $10\, $100\, $1\,000 or more at a time\, adding up to nearly $200 million through GiveMN.org to support more than 10\,000 organizations all across the state. \nFor us\, Give to the Max Day is a celebration of generosity in countless ways. We see groups of volunteers come together to pack meals for 24 hours straight. We hear from teachers who use the day to teach the importance of giving back\, even offering students their own $5 and $10 Golden Tickets. There are countless displays of generosity each year as we shine a light on what’s good in our communities. \nSupport your favorite causes for GTMD18 \nAs we get ready for the 10th annual Give to the Max Day this Thursday\, we encourage you to reflect on the causes you are passionate about\, whether it’s a national or statewide movement\, or a neighborhood group down the street. Your donations will help them continue to meet their missions\, but we also hope in the days to come you will consider volunteering\, donating goods and clothing…realizing generosity in all its forms. \nOn behalf of Minnesota’s nonprofits and schools\, thank you for your support on Give to the Max Day\, and all year round. \nSincerely\, \n \nJake Blumberg\nExecutive Director\, GiveMN\n\n. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .\n\nEditor’s Note: If you’d like to participate in Give to the Max Day\, but aren’t familiar with local organizations\, here are some to consider:People Serving People\, Minnesota Center for Book Arts\, Mill City Summer Opera\, The Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul\, Minneapolis Parks Foundation\, Friends of the Hennepin County Library\, MacPhail Center for Music\, Friends of the Mill District\, St. Stephen’s Human Services\, House of Charity\, YouthLink\, Minnesota Historical Society\, Minneapolis Foundation\, Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity

SUMMARY:Public Hearing: Funding our Trees
DESCRIPTION:Do you care about our trees in Minneapolis? We need your help in contacting your elected Park Board Commissioners! \nIn the current Superintendent’s proposed budget\, tree planting and stump grinding are proposed to be cut by more than $140\,000\, which will mean 563 fewer trees planted in 2019. On the bright side\, the proposed budget funds a new Forestry outreach coordinator position dedicated to working with Minneapolis kids and communities to care for our trees. This will ensure that more of the trees we plant will be watered and pruned\, which will make sure that more young trees survive. \nThe Minneapolis Tree Advisory Commission (MTAC) needs people to advocate for keeping the Outreach Coordinator funded\, and for undoing the proposed cuts to tree planting. \nPlease come to the public hearing on November 14 at 5:00pm\, in the Minnehaha Conference Room of the Park Board’s headquarters\, 2117 West River Road. \nIf you can’t make it\, please reach out to your Park Commissioners on social media or here: https://www.minneapolisparks.org/about_us/leadership_and_structure/commissioners/ District 2 commissioner (including the North Loop: Kale Severson kseverson@minneapolisparks.org \nOther Commissioners:- jcowgill@minneapolisparks.org\, bbourn@minneapolisparks.org\, mforney@minneapolisparks.org\, lfrench@minneapolisparks.org\, ahassan@minneapolisparks.org\, cmeyer@minneapolisparks.org\, smusich@minneapolisparks.org\, kseverson@minneapolisparks.org\, lvetaw@minneapolisparks.org \nA healthy tree canopy is vital to combating climate change\, managing storm water\, reducing heat island effect\, and improving neighborhood health and livability. As we lose tens of thousands of mature trees to Emerald Ash Borer and Dutch Elm disease\, we need to do everything we can to increase our canopy. \nhttps://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/sustainability/trees/index.htm

SUMMARY:Get free pizza at Black Sheep this weekend
DESCRIPTION:Emily Cassel : City Pages : October 18. 2018 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nEwe won’t want to miss it.Black Sheep Pizza \n\nQuestion: What’s better than the best pizza in the Twin Cities? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnswer: The best pizza in the Twin Cities\, but also\, you don’t have to pay for it.\n\n\nBlack Sheep Pizza\, makers of the magical\, just-charred\, coal-fired crusts you dream about\, turns 10 this month. And like any good birthday party host\, they’re providing the pizza: From noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday\, October 21st\, you can walk in and snag a totally free 12-inch pie. \nThe offer is shockingly catch-free\, too\, good for any pizza on the menu except the #7 (those oyster mushrooms demand your dollars\, thank you very much) or a build-your-own two-topping option. It’s up for grabs at both the Minneapolis and St. Paul Black Sheep locations\, and there’ll be happy hour drink deals throughout the full six-hour window to boot. \nNo purchase necessary—but they are going to limit you to one per person. Those monsters. \nKind of hard to believe it’s been a decade since we were first cooing over “the most perfect pizza crust in the metro area\,” as the shop now slings those crusts beneath its scribbly sheep-logo sign at two Minneapolis locations (the North Loop original and an annex on Eat Street)\, one in St. Paul\, and another in the MSP Airport. \nAnyway! Mark your calendars for Sunday accordingly\, or RSVP on Facebook and let ol’ Zuckerberg do the reminding for you.

SUMMARY:New Exhibition at Minnesota Center for Book Arts Explores the Storytelling Power of Quilts
DESCRIPTION:Quilt\, Not Quilt: The Afterlife is a new exhibition at Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA)\, on view from October 12th - December 2nd in the Open Book Cowles Literary Commons. This exhibition features artwork that repurposes old\, tattered quilts into new forms while still preserving the quilts’ heritage\, craftsmanship\, and legacy. The opening reception for Quilt\, Not Quilt will take place on Wednesday\, October 17 from 6-8pm. The reception includes an artist talk and poetry reading from 7-8pm in the Target Performance Hall on the second floor of Open Book\, as well as a meet and greet with the artists and poets. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. \nTwelve participating artists created paper\, poetry\, broadsides\, and other works from quilts\, drawing inspiration from the textiles themselves as well as from the stories they tell. The artists explored the political\, economic\, and social contexts surrounding the creation of the quilts\, making connections between the makers’ history and their work. The artwork created for the exhibition touches on themes of craftsmanship and labor\, scarcity and wealth\, and stories both recalled and forgotten. \nQuilt\, Not Quilt showcases artists from the MCBA community and beyond. Participating artists include Zoë Bird\, Katy Collier\, Tari “TJ” Goerlitz\, Georgia A. Greeley\, Darius Homayounpour\, Karen Kinoshita\, Dana LeMoine\, Rosa Maria de la Cueva Peterson\, Jerry McClelland\, Cathy Ryan\, Patty Wheeler Andrews\, and Morgan Grayce Willow. Each artist transformed their chosen quilt in unexpected and thought-provoking ways\, and the resulting exhibition both honors the practice of quilting and expands established notions about what it means to craft and make art. \nAs the largest and most comprehensive center of its kind in the nation\, Minnesota Center for Book Arts celebrates the book as a vibrant contemporary art form that takes many shapes. From the traditional crafts of papermaking\, letterpress printing\, and hand bookbinding to experimental artmaking and self-publishing techniques\, MCBA supports the limitless creative evolution of book arts through book arts workshops and programming for adults\, youth\, families\, K-12 students\, and teachers. MCBA is located in the Open Book building in downtown Minneapolis\, alongside partner organizations The Loft Literary Center and Milkweed Editions. To learn more\, visit www.mnbookarts.org. \n
