SUMMARY:Illuminate the Lock: Aaron Dysart\, Surface
DESCRIPTION:The 49-foot tall chamber of Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam will become a canvas for experimental artworks during this two-part series. \nSurface by artist Aaron Dysart kicks off the series\, using years of handwritten data recorded by Army Corps of Engineers staff at the Lock as the basis for a light show. Daily pool heights and lockages will translate into shifting colors projected on atmospheric effects created in the lock chamber. The spectacle will display the 52-year operating history of this iconic Minneapolis space through near daily observations by the people who tended it. \nPresented by Northern Lights.mn\, Mississippi Park Connection\, theMississippi National River and Recreation Area\, and as part of Here & There by The Soap Factory with support from St. Anthony Falls Heritage Board and the US Army Corps of Engineers. \nSeptember 15 & 16\n8-10:30 pm\nFree\nUpper St. Anthony Falls Lock Visitor Center \nAbove image: Aaron Dysart\, Surface. SUMMARY:Traffic Zone Exhibition Reception - Jodi Reeb
DESCRIPTION:Encircle\nJodi Reeb\, Chroma Sequence\, 2017\nEncaustic and metallic paint on acrylic disks\, 156 x 45 x 2 in. \nAn exhibition of new work by Jodi Reeb\nOctober 12 – November 10\, 2017\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and by appointment\ntrafficzoneart@gmail.com \n \nJodi Reeb\, Stellar Realm (7 disks)\, 2016\nOxidized metallic paint on acrylic disks\, 60 x 36 x 2 in. \nDescription \nTraffic Zone Gallery presents Encircle\, and exhibition of new work by Jodi Reeb. In this new series of work\, Reeb has created circular works in an installation that oscillate between painting and sculpture. The artist uses contrasting materials and substrates made of wood\, found objects and circular acrylic panels using encaustic (beeswax) and acrylic paint as well as metallic paints that transform or react when combined. Combinations are discovered\, explored\, proposed\, rejected and accepted as part of the art-making process. Components are moved around in varying compositions. These paintings are created to be part of a series and some are partnered through discovery to utilize the entire gallery wall space. The disk paintings will flow from one wall to another continuously\, disregarding where walls conjoin as a way of exploring contrasting and common elements that form connections. Through this approach Reeb discovers relationships between the elements creating rhythms\, patterns and visual textures that are nature-based as well as abstract. \nArtist Statement \nCircles have been a subject matter for me for over 20 years. I identify with the obvious references to the shape; centered\, wholeness\, sphere\, etc. However\, the attraction for me is the negative space that a circle or sphere evokes through shadow and space. I appreciate the fact that a circle is both an organic and a geometric shape. I apply changes in texture and color by painting diverse surfaces with materials such as beeswax and metallic paints that patina when they interact and create something new. I begin with a layer of paint or a structure\, and from that point on\, it becomes about process; making marks and textures\, applying materials\, responding to each action with a reaction. In this way\, spontaneous connections are valued as highly as are planned compositions.  As each work evolves\, it gains an identity that eventually solves itself through process\, positive and negative space and dimension. Jodi Reeb \n \nJodi Reeb\, Corner View\, 2016\nEncaustic and metallic paint on acrylic disks\, 108 x 72 x 3 in. \nArtist Biography \nJodi Reeb lives in Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, and has been creating art for over 25 years since childhood. Her artwork has been shown nationally receiving numerous awards and is in many private and corporate collections nationally. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design where she instructed printmaking in the Continuing Studies program for over 9 years. Reeb creates her mixed-media paintings from her studio at the Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art in Minneapolis\, but travels to the countryside to receive her inspiration\, combining contrasting landscapes and environments in her work. \nMission Statement \nTraffic Zone Center for Visual Art supports the work of mid-career professional artists with high-quality\, affordable studios and the engagement of audiences with gallery exhibitions\, open studio events\, art classes and workshops.
