Update on Work Groups Week of September 17, 2018

An update from Steven Gallagher, project coordinator for Neighborhoods 2020:

As the project coordinator, I will be sending weekly updates on the progress of our important work. In addition to these updates, you can discuss Neighborhoods 2020 directly with me either at my community office hours (listed in the section below), or via email to Steven.Gallagher@minneapolismn.gov or 612-673-2905.

The Program Guidelines, Funding and Implementation work group will meet this coming week. The tentative plan for each work group going forward is:

The Program Guidelines, Funding and Implementation

  • September 20 – Crown Roller Mill, Second Floor – 6:00 p.m. Solidifying program guidelines.
  • October 2 at the Crown Roller Mill, Second Floor – 6:00 p.m. Funding recommendations (tentative).

The Governance Advisory Structure for Neighborhood and Community Engagement

  • September 11 – Meeting spent discussing the scope of work a governance structure will encompass. Work group members felt that both neighborhood engagement and City department engagement processes should be addressed in the same commission. The group reviewed best practices throughout the country.
  • September 26 – Crown Roller Mill, Second Floor – 6:00 p.m. Setting framework for future governance structure.

The Citywide Community Engagement Policy

  • September 13 – Brett Hjelle, director of Business Administration and Patty Day, communications and outreach coordinator from Public Works reviewed their engagement structure, successes and failures with the members. They requested that the work group define a citywide engagement plan to assist them in their work. The work group discussed next steps and reviewed examples from other cities in North America.
  • September 27 – Crown Roller Mill, Second Floor – 6:00 p.m. Creating minimum expectations for the City and organizations.

Neighborhoods 2020 is a community process to identify the next generation of neighborhood programming, funding and governance structure to support the City’s 70 neighborhood organizations starting in 2020 and beyond. Three work groups have been established to cover the major function areas of this work: programming and funding; governance; and citywide engagement policy. The work groups consist of representatives from neighborhood organizations, cultural groups, those with equity/undoing racism experience and representatives appointed by City Council and the mayor. The goal is to have policy recommendations to the City Council by January 2019.
