SUMMARY:Global Conversations: The Waning of Pax Americana - Minneapolis Central Library
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. has begun a historic shift away from Pax Americana\, the liberal international order that was established in the wake of World War II. Since 1945\, Pax Americana has sought peaceful international relations and an open economy\, buttressed by U.S. military power. In championing “America First” isolationism and protectionism\, President Trump has shifted the political direction toward selective U.S. engagement\, where foreign commitments are limited to areas of vital U.S. interest and economic nationalism is the order of the day.\n\nJoin the conversation with former U.S. Foreign Service Officer\, Tom Hanson\, as he examines what this shift means for U.S. geopolitics and foreign policy. \nAbout the Speaker\nTom Hanson currently serves as Diplomat in Residence at the Alworth Institute for International Affairs at the University of Minnesota – Duluth. He is a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer whose postings included East Germany\, France\, Norway\, the Soviet Union\, Sweden\, and the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. He also participated in the opening of new U.S. embassies in Mongolia and Estonia\, worked on the Foreign Relations Committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives\, and served as director for NATO and European Affairs at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington\, D.C. A member of Global Minnesota’s Great Decisions advisory committee\, Tom speaks frequently on international issues and contributes to local and international media. He is also a board member of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights\, the International Leadership Program at the University of St. Thomas\, and the Cultural Entrepreneurship Program at the University of Minnesota – Duluth. Tom holds a BA degree from the University of Minnesota and graduate degrees from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy; the Institute of Advanced International Studies in Switzerland; and the National School of Administration in France. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is presented in partnership with the Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central.

DESCRIPTION:Of all NATO allies\, Turkey represents the most daunting challenge for the Trump administration. In the wake of a failed military coup in July 2016\, the autocratic trend in Ankara took a turn for the worse. One year on\, an overwhelming majority of the population considers the United States to be their country’s greatest security threat. In this age of a worsening “clash of civilizations” between Islam and the West\, even more important than its place on the map is what Turkey symbolically represents as the most institutionally Westernized Muslim country in the world.\n\nJoin us for a thought-provoking conversation with former Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson as he discusses the current situation in Turkey and its impact on foreign policy. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmbassador Ross Wilson is a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council\, visiting lecturer in international affairs at the George Washington University\, and Global Minnesota board member. Over the course of a 30-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service\, he served as American ambassador to Turkey and Azerbaijan and held assignments at the U.S. Embassies in Moscow and Prague and at the U.S. Consulate General in Melbourne\, Australia. In Washington\, Ambassador Wilson held several positions including chief U.S. negotiator for the Free Trade Area of the Americas. In 2010-2014\, Ambassador Wilson served as director of the Atlantic Council’s Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center\, where he led the Council’s work on the former Soviet states\, Turkey\, and regional energy and economic issues and organized the Council’s annual Energy and Economic Summit in Istanbul. Ambassador Wilson received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota and master’s degrees from Columbia University and the U.S. National War College.  He is a recipient of the president’s Meritorious Service Award\, as well as numerous Department of State awards and honors. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is produced in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library. \n\n\n\n\nRegistration Time: 5:30 pm

SUMMARY:Global Conversations: The Rise of ISIS
DESCRIPTION:Born out of an umbrella organization of al-Qaeda in Iraq\, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) burst onto the international stage after it conquered Fallujah in December 2013. Since then\, the group has seized control of a number of critical strongholds in both countries and declared itself a caliphate. Still\, the question remains: what is ISIS\, and what danger does it present to today’s global community? \n\nMolly Hayes\, formerly with the U.S. Department of State\, will lead a discussion on these questions and more. \nMolly Hayes worked for the U.S. Department of State as an advisor on the Middle East\, and North Africa\, with an emphasis on counterterrorism and human rights issues. She served as the State Department’s counterterrorism advisor for East Africa; desk officer for Kenya\, Morocco\, Western Sahara\, Libya\, and Tunisia; and assistant to the Coordinator for Counterterrorism. She also served as deputy coordinator of the State Department’s Egypt Task Force during the 2011 Arab Spring. Molly holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Arabic from the University of Notre Dame and will pursue a mid-career policy degree at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs as a Thomas H.
