DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Big River’s biggest night\, as we celebrate Friends of the Mississippi River’s 25th anniversary. To mark the occasion\, this year’s annual signature event\, “An Evening Celebrating the Mississippi River\,” will focus on how the river inspires — shining the spotlight on the connection between the river and our thriving local arts community. Because the Mighty Mississippi is a muse for so much creativity and cultural expression\, our program will celebrate and feature local\, acclaimed artists of various media who rely on our Big River as a source of inspiration and rejuvenation\, including: \nJearlyn Steele\, vocalist and emcee\nSeitu Jones\, artist and storyteller\nLaura Caviani\, jazz pianist and composer\nBao Phi\, author\, poet\, and spoken word artist\nGwen Westerman\, educator\, poet and fiber artist\nSandy Spieler\, water lover\, artist and activist\nTom Reiter\, photographer and documentarian\nMniówe\, indigenous Water Bar\nWrite to the River\, compilation of river-inspired prose and poetry \nFrom our lovely venue\, Aria in Minneapolis’ North Loop\, together we will: \n\ncelebrate FMR’s 25th anniversary and all that we have achieved together\nlook to the next 25 years and beyond and what remains critical to advancing our urban river conservation mission\nsavor local\, seasonal fare and refreshments\nenjoy an entertaining river-themed live auction\nrelish the company of fellow friends of the river\n\nNeed another reason to attend? Proceeds from the event directly support Friends of the Mississippi River’s work to protect\, restore and enhance the Mississippi River\, a treasured resource in our midst. \nTickets are now available\nPlease consider a minimum $125 contribution for each attendee. This fabulous fundraising event will feature Jamel Brinkley (A Lucky Man)\, Tarfia Faizullah (Registers of Illuminated Villages)\, and Wayétu Moore (She Would Be King) in conversation with Graywolf director and publisher Fiona McCrae and executive editor Jeff Shotts. Music will be provided by the Davu Seru Trio. We’ll have a great time! Brinkley was raised in the Bronx and Brooklyn\, NY\, and is a graduate of Columbia University and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. His work has received fellowships from Kimbilio Fiction and the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing. \nTarfia Faizullah is the author of Registers of Illuminated Villages\, an urgent and highly-anticipated poetry collection that transforms her powerful accounts of violence\, war\, and loss into poems of many forms and voices—elegies\, outcries\, self-portraits\, and larger-scale confrontations with discrimination\, family\, and memory. Faizullah is also the author of Seam\, winner of the VIDA Awards and a Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award. She teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. \nWayétu Moore is the author of the forthcoming novel She Would Be King\, a powerful and exhilarating retelling of Liberia’s formation told through three unforgettable characters who share an uncommon bond. Moore is the founder of One Moore Book and is a graduate of Howard University\, Columbia University\, and the University of Southern California. She teaches at the City University of New York’s John Jay College and lives in Brooklyn\, NY.
