Here\, Brian Runzel\, SWLRT construction director\, walked under the I-394 Bridge near the Bryn Mawr Station Area in Minneapolis. \n\n\n\nA proposed concrete wall separating freight and light-rail trains along a short stretch of the Southwest light-rail line will “adversely affect” a historic rail district in Minneapolis\, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) said this week.\n\n\n\nThe 1.4-mile wall\, which will be 10-feet high in some places\, was added to the project at the behest of BNSF Railway\, which owns the right of way between the Royalston Avenue/Farmers Market and Bryn Mawr LRT stations. \nThe $20 million wall would be located within the St. Paul\, Minneapolis & Manitoba Railroad/Great Northern Railway Historic District. Because the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) determined the historic district is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places\, a review of the proposed changes was required. \nThe FTA found the wall would “adversely affect” the historic district because building it would involve widening “the historic cut\, removal of several historic retaining walls\, replacement of historic stone and concrete walls and earthen embankment\, changing its character.” \nThe wall will also serve as a “physical and visual barrier” between freight track and the historic rail yards\, the review stated. \nNow the Met Council\, which is building and operating the $1.9 billion Southwest line\, will work with MnDOT to prepare a “mitigation plan” to minimize the concrete wall’s effects on the historic property. \n\n\n\n\nDAVID JOLES – STAR TRIBUNE FILE\nRunze showed an artist’s rendering of the Bryn Mawr Station Area during a tour in September. S. in Minneapolis.\nThe 14½-mile Southwest light-rail line would connect downtown Minneapolis with Eden Prairie\, with passenger service beginning in 2022.

SUMMARY:Proposed Freight Rail Corridor Protection Wall
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the design of the proposed corridor protection wall between freight rail and light rail tracks in Minneapolis\, and give your input on aesthetic design options.  \nBetween Glenwood Avenue and Bryn Mawr Station in Minneapolis\, METRO Green Line Extension tracks will run parallel to high volume mainline freight rail tracks (the Wayzata Subdivision). The current design of the Southwest LRT project includes protection for bridge piers and other corridor elements in this area. The additional corridor protection wall between the freight rail and light rail tracks is required by BNSF as a condition for allowing the LRT tracks to be built on its right of way. \nFor more information about the proposed corridor protection wall and to view a video of the area\, visit the project’s website at www.swlrt.org. If you can’t attend this meeting\, a comment form and open house materials will be posted on the website to receive your feedback. \nAbout the Project:  \nThe planned Southwest Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project (METRO Green Line Extension) will operate from downtown Minneapolis through the communities of St. Louis Park\, Hopkins\, Minnetonka\, and Eden Prairie\, passing in close proximity to the city of Edina. The line will connect major activity centers in the region including downtown Minneapolis\, Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park\, downtown Hopkins and the Opus/Golden Triangle employment area in Minnetonka and Eden Prairie. Ridership in 2040 is forecasted at approximately 34\,000 average weekday boardings. The project will interline with the METRO Green Line\, which will provide a one-seat ride to destinations such as the University of Minnesota\, state Capitol and downtown St. Paul. It will be part of an integrated system of transitways\, including connections to the METRO Blue Line\, the proposed METRO Blue Line Extension\, the Northstar Commuter Rail line\, a variety of major bus routes along the alignment\, and proposed future transitway and rail lines. The Metropolitan Council will be the grantee of federal funds. The regional government agency is charged with building the line in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The Southwest Corridor Management Committee\, which includes commissioners from Hennepin County and the mayors of Minneapolis\, St. Louis Park\, Edina\, Hopkins\, Minnetonka\, and Eden Prairie\, provides advice and oversight.
