SUMMARY:Artist Closing Reception: Form + Content Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Beth Bergman Closing Reception: Saturday\, January 3\, 2026\, 2 – 5 pm \nForm+Content Gallery is pleased to present “Awkward Moments”\, Beth Bergman’s second exhibit at Form+Content Gallery.  It includes paintings made in 2024-2025.  The works are acrylic on Thai Mulberry paper collaged to basswood panels.  The abstract images explore new ideas of the color palette\, the relationship of shapes and spaces\, and traditional approaches to composition.  One series of paintings explores ideas of cocooning\, nesting\, solitude.  Newer works explore “Awkward Moments” in color\, composition and shapes. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nBETH BERGMAN grew up in Chicago.  She traveled to St. Paul\, Minnesota\, to study studio arts at Macalester College.  In 1976\, she was a founding member of the WARM Gallery\,  A Feminist Art Collective\, in Minneapolis.  In 1984\, Bergman purchased Wet Paint\, an art supply store in St. Paul that grew to an internationally known business in the 33 years of her tenure.  In 2017\, Bergman sold her business to two employees and started a studio art practice again.  In 2022\, she joined Form+Content Gallery in Minneapolis.

SUMMARY:Form+Content Gallery: Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:On View: October 09 through November 15 (Thursdays\, Fridays\, Saturdays 12-6pm) \nOpening Reception: Sunday\, October 12\, 2025\, 3:00-5:00pm \nArtist’s Talk: Thursday\, October 23\, 7:00 – 8:30 pm \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRosa Kittsteiner and Mark Ostapchuk share time spent in Minneapolis developing artwork. Their pictures are typically informed by visual responses to personal history and broader concerns about our place in the world. Rosa’s multi media paintings often feature gatherings of fantastic fish. Mark’s recent paintings and intaglio prints include stylized profiles of ghosts and plant sprouts. Both Mark and Rosa embrace an eagerness to question and critically respond to decisions in individual pieces and the overall direction of their work. The pieces in this exhibition are rooted in this reflection and practice. \n

SUMMARY:Permutations at Form+Content Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Permutations: Print works by Beth Dorsey\, Gwen Partin\, Ingrid Restemayer\, Patty Scott\, and Dean Trisko \n \nForm+Content Gallery and five printmakers from the Northrup King Building present an exhibit of hand-pulled prints\nand mixed media artworks. \nExhibiting Artists\nBeth Dorsey\nGwen Partin\nIngrid Restemayer\nPatty Scott\nDean Trisko \nThese five printmakers are all seasoned artists\, knowledgeable in print processes as well as other fine art mediums. They have all shared the same studio building for many years\, yet only recently came together to share resources and to learn each others varied uses of printmaking. All are currently using printmaking as a mode of furthering their creative voices. \nBeth Dorsey is attracted to everyday objects with repeatable patterns. Venetian blinds\, windows\, and corrugated material in photogravure prints form the foundation of her imagery. Dorsey uses the ability to repeat an image to build singular compositions. Then through experimentation\, she adds layers\, sometime plaiting them to change and increase complexity and interest. \nGwen Partin works in drawing\, printmaking and book arts. Her focus comes from geometric and natural shapes and textures as well as from textiles with their systems of woven\, tiled or tessellated patterns. Partin prints in monotype\, with cut paper stencils\, relief blocks and collagraphs making a lexicon of parts that get collaged back together. Her textural 2-d works embody a unique balance of control and serendipity. \nIngrid Restemayer is a printmaker and fiber artist. Her work has a hint of storytelling with the inclusion of dry-point intaglio images as pseudo-illustrations when paired with shapes formed from hand-embroidery. Restemayer is interested in sustainable tactics in art creation. She uses discarded plastics for her printing plates. While printmaking is a form of mechanization\, she enhances the repetitive imagery with hand-sewing shapes that change the meaning of the overall image. \nPatty Scott works solely on paper. Part of an international community of urban sketchers\, her background in printmaking includes lithography\, etching\, monoprint and linocuts. Her current linocut images convey tension and feelings of confinement. Scott’s de-emphasis of line has her relying on large areas of flat color. She enacts a type of anthropomorphizing of the abstract. \nDean Trisko makes abstract art—drawings\, paintings\, and prints. Abstraction allows his pursuit of beauty without demanding narrative or specific reference. Trisko is often inspired by landscapes – observed then reduced\, exaggerated and edited until most representation is gone. Intaglio print methods spark ideas by allowing Trisko to rearrange imagery and free him to try different ways of printing plates. \nPermutations is a chance to see new work by accomplished artists who share a medium that\, in itself\, has several possible variations. \nMay 23 – June 29\, 2024 \nOpening Reception|\nSaturday\, May 25  3:00 – 6:00 pm \nFree and open to the public \n  \nArtist’s Talk \nA panel discussion featuring all five artists will be held in the gallery in June. SUMMARY:Form+Content Gallery: Rage. Remember. Renew.
DESCRIPTION:Seven Memorials to Victims of Gun Violence\n\nCurated by Patricia Olson \n\n\nKatayoun Amjadi\nLinda Brooks\nBetsy Dollar\nCory Favre\nCarolyn Halliday\nTim Harding with Nina Martine Robinson\nPatricia Olson\n\nWhat\nSeven artists have each chosen an incident of gun violence and created an installation to memorialize its victims. In these works\, we acknowledge our rage at this senseless violence\, remember its victims\, and offer the opportunity to renew our commitment to eradicating gun violence. \nWhen\nDecember 7\, 2023 – January 13\, 2024\nGallery hours: Thursday\, Friday\, Saturday\, 12:00 noon – 6:00 pm and by appointment\nFree and open to the public \nPublic Reception \nSaturday\, December 9\, 5:00 – 7:00 pm\nPerformance ritual by Kristina Fjellman at 5:30 pm\nFree and open to the public \nArtists’ Talk\nSunday\, December 17\, 1:00 pm in the Gallery\nModerated by Michal Sagar\nFree and open to the publicWhere\nForm+Content Gallery\nWhitney Square Building\n210 North Second Street\, Suite 104\, Minneapolis\, MN 55401\nOne block north of Washington Avenue North and two blocks west of East Hennepin Avenue.\nParking is available on the street (metered) and in neighborhood parking ramps. See our website for additional parking options. \nMore Information\nformandcontent@gmail.com    |    (612) 436-1151    |     www.formandcontent.org\nCurator’s email: patriciaolsonart@gmail.com \nArtists’ Statements and Biographies \nKatayoun Amjadi \n\nDetail of installation\,The Last Thing I Saw\,\nProtestor shot in the eye on September 20\, 2022\,\nin Bandar Abbas\, Iran. Media: medical eye patches\,\nthread\, paper roll\, vinyl wall text \nStatement: A screen of 504 eye patches sewn together with black thread bisects the gallery wall into two sections. On each side of the curtain\, part of a sentence is readable. The words are translated in English on the left\, and in the original Persian (Farsi) on the right. The black screen of eye patches partially obscures the rest of the text underneath\, while at the same time reveals blurred images of Iranians shot in the eye during the protests of the last year. One of the many Iranians wounded in the last year\, was a young law student from the southern city of Bandar Abbas\, Iran: Ghazal Ranjkesh. Ghazal was a 21-year-old protestor\, shot in the right eye on September 20\, 2022. Her story is one of many hundreds of protestors that have been wounded in this manner. The common perception is that targeting the eyes\, breasts and buttocks of female protestors in particular\, is intentional. The eyes are central to the idea of beauty in Iran\, and have a mythical status in Persian culture. To target them is to strike at the core of femininity\, to mutilate the essence of womanhood. I chose this event because I’m an Iranian woman. Violence to one woman’s body\, is violence to all. \nBiography: Katayoun Amjadi is an Iranian-born\, Minneapolis-based artist\, educator\, and independent curator. In her work\, she often considers the sociopolitical systems that shape our perceptions of Self and Other\, such as language\, religion\, gender\, politics\, and nationalist ideologies. Amjadi blurs these boundaries and creates an off-balance\, hybrid style that is slightly acerbic and a little bit tongue-in-cheek. Amjadi holds an MFA in ceramics and sculpture from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and currently teaches in the Art Department at Normandale Community College in Bloomington\, MN. She also teaches as a visiting lecturer at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design and the University of Minnesota. Her work has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions nationally and internationally\, including Minnesota Museum of American Art\, St. Paul; Rochester Art Center; Weisman Art Museum\, Minneapolis; Des Moines Art Center; Beijing Film Academy\, China; Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe\, Germany; and Haftsamar Gallery\, Tehran. Selected fellowships include MCAD-Jerome Emerging Artist and Artist Initiative Grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Amjadi co-runs a studio arts building and maintains a small ceramics business in the Q.arma Building in the northeast Minneapolis art district. \nLinda Brooks \n\nDetail of installation: Tree of Life Synagogue\nMassacre Memorial\, Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania\,\nOctober 27\, 2018\, Cheshvan 18\, 5779. Media:\nadhesive-backed fabric\, aqueous inkjet photograph\,\npine-framed archival pigment prints\, video projection \nStatement: The premeditated murder of eleven Jewish worshipers belonging to three congregations that found their spiritual home at the Tree of Life Synagogue filled me with sorrow and frustration. As a Jewish person on alert\, every incident of gun violence impacts me and contributes to a public trauma of terrorism in our country. This horrific act of violence and others like it proclaim a worsening tragic connection to histories of malicious\, ongoing hate crimes against Jews and other marginalized people. As a memorial to the Jewish victims\, the imagery references the inherent meanings of the tree of life in Judaism. It symbolizes the cycles of life\, death\, rebirth\, and connections to heritage and history. The tree of life is often used to refer to the sacred Hebrew text within the Torah. The Torah is a source of Jewish origins\, laws\, stories\, and guidance for being a good person. A life-affirming symbol\, the tree of life is commonly embraced by many cultures and religions. Mother\, enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation\, scientist\, Professor Robin Wall Kimmerer in her book Braiding Sweetgrass asserts\, “Old-growth cultures\, like old-growth forests\, have not been exterminated.” \nBiography: The personal content of Brooks’ photographic practice is connected to larger cultural contexts. Individuals\, scenarios\, or objects are situated within relationships\, experiences\, and external circumstances. Over more than 40 years\, she has worked as an artist\, teacher\, curator\, and parent in the Twin Cities. She was a Hermitage Fellow for 2018-2020. Artist fellowships have been granted from the NEA\, Rimon: The Minnesota Jewish Arts Council\, Minnesota State Arts Board\, and the McKnight Foundation. Her photographs have been included in more than 80 group exhibitions including Pier 24\, San Francisco; Aperture\, NYC; Hallwalls\, Buffalo\, NY; and the 5th Vienna Biennale\, Austria. More than a dozen venues including Walker Art Center; the Cultural Center\, Chicago; and the Sabes Jewish Community Center\, MN\, have installed solo exhibitions. Photographs are in the collections of The Bibliothèque Nationale de France\, Minnesota Historical Society\, George Eastman Museum\, and The Brooklyn Museum. Young Voices: photographs of/by girls/teens/women\, and the Jerome Hill Centennial Photography Exhibition 2005 are among the shows Brooks has curated. Images from between the birthdays are included in Reframings: New American Feminist Photographies. PROXIMITIES art\, education\, activism was published by TC Photo in late 2020. \n  \nBetsy Dollar \n\nDetail of installation: Dancing the Year Away\,\nLunar New Year Tragedy\, The Star Ballroom\nin Monterey Park\, California\, during the Lunar\nNew Year Celebration\, January 21\, 2023.\nMedia: handmade paper \nStatement: On the evening of January 21\, 2023\, during the Lunar New Year Festivities in Monterey Park\, California\, a man entered the Star Ballroom and opened fire. He shot twenty dancers; eleven died\, nine survived. The shooter fled to the Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio in Alhambra\, north of Monterey Park where he was disarmed in a struggle at the door and fled. He was later discovered in his van where he took his own life. The shooter\, Huu Can Tran\, is the oldest mass shooter on record. He was Vietnamese. All the victims of the shooting were Chinese\, Taiwanese\, Vietnamese or Filipino\, over the age of 55\, most in their 60s and 70s. All were passionate about ballroom dancing. The shooter\, a ballroom dancer himself\, chose this ballroom as his target. He killed himself before any motivations could be found or questions could be answered. For me\, this tragedy is tempered by the fact that these people were struck down doing something they loved. They all lived long\, rich lives and left legacies of love and respect. As a paper artist it seems fitting to create a memorial of paper scrolls since their roots are in the Asian tradition. \nBiography: Betsy Dollar grew up in a family of artists in the Chicago area. After high school she attended Minneapolis College of Art & Design for two years. Ultimately\, she moved to Boulder\, Colorado\, where she completed both her BFA and MFA in printmaking and papermaking at the University of Colorado\, Boulder. She stayed in Boulder where she had an audio-visual production company\, taught art at every level\, and worked as both a commercial and fine artist. In 2006 she left Boulder and returned to Minnesota\, where she spent four years working as an artist\, curating exhibitions\, and teaching. In 2009 Betsy returned to Illinois to become the Executive Director of the Springfield Art Association. Betsy works primarily in handmade paper\, printmaking\, book arts\, and with installations that are walk-through books made from her handmade papers. Her work is in both private and public collections in the United States. \nCory Favre \n\nDetail of installation: Land of the Free\, Homeroom\nof the Brave; Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting\,\nNewtown\, Connecticut\, December 14\, 2012.\nMixed media installation \nStatement: In less than five minutes on the morning of December 14\, 2012\, Adam Lanza entered the doors of Sandy Hook Elementary and murdered 20 students and six faculty members after first shooting his mother in the head while in her bed. Lanza died by suicide before police entered the building. As a mother of three\, my oldest being in first grade (the same age as these children were at the time of their deaths)\, I am acutely aware of all the things that could come to harm them. Sending them off to school should not be on that list. It should be a safe place. I’m using recognizable imagery and everyday school items as a way to connect the horrific deaths of these children to what we put our children through currently\, and what we expect them to process and deal with even when no gun is present. Firearm deaths are the number one cause of death in children in the United States as of 2020. This should be shocking to everyone\, every single person\, who purports to care about the wellbeing and safety of children. Yet\, no significant legislation has been passed. We aren’t supposed to politicize these moments. \nBiography: Cory Favre is a visual artist living and working in Roseville\, Minnesota. She has a bachelor’s degree from Ball State University with focuses in Studio Art and Interior Design and is an alumna of the Women’s Art Institute Studio Intensive in 2019. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Art Resources of Minnesota\, has been a long-time member of the Northeast Minneapolis Artists Association and North Suburban Center for the Arts. She has exhibited work both locally and regionally and has been the recipient of two Minnesota State Arts Board Grants as well as an Artist Initiative Grant in 2020 for her White Knuckled Project and a Creative Support Grant in 2022 for her series on motherhood called The Thick of It. Favre works  primarily in drawing and oil painting\, but has recently been experimenting with felt and embroidery in her work. Inspired by social justice issues and politics\, particularly those issues facing women\, she explores uncomfortable topics through bright\, vibrant and fun imagery\, using these techniques to draw the viewer into the conversation. Creating work this way\, she is able to make these topics approachable and gives people a safe place to explore and think on their own experiences. \nCarolyn Halliday \n\nDetail of installation: Mourning Cloths: Hate Crime\nat Tops Friendly Market\, Buffalo\, NY\, May 14\, 2022.\nMedia: handstiching on hand-made substrates of animal\nmembrane and used dryer sheets; cast animal membrane \n  \nStatement: My ongoing body of work\, Mourning Cloths\, began with the unexpected death of my brother. I was compelled to intuitively embroider random stitching on substrates I made of animal membrane. My use of animal membrane plays homage to the many early communities in the world that have devised some form of parchment from animal skin. I stitched with black thread to symbolize death and mourning. Additionally\, after starting this work\, I discovered through research that for centuries\, women in the United States have used embroidery to mark mourning. This historic connection with others who embroidered as a way to mourn\, grounds my commitment to textile tradition. My sensitivity to racism and individual oppression formed the basis for my choice of memorializing the hate crime at the ironically named Tops Friendly Market mass shooting. In addition to the black silk threads that I use on other mourning cloths\, I have incorporated red threads.  On the substrates I also incorporated soil pigments to reference dried blood. I repurposed the red threads that I removed from a swastika flag that hung in Cherbourg\, France\, during the WWII Nazi occupation. My father-in-law removed the flag on the day his army troop liberated the town. \nBiography: Carolyn Halliday is a contemporary visual artist grounded in textile traditions. Ecological/evolutionary/biological concerns and her relationship with nature inform much of her work. Her art has been exhibited for over two decades nationally and internationally. In the past three years her work has traveled to New York City\, Miami\, Madrid\, Boston area\, Arizona and Korea. Her work is in the collection of the Minnesota Historical Society and the Weisman Art Museum. She has received a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant and Textile Center’s Spun Gold Award for a lifetime commitment to textile art and Textile Center. She was appointed the first member and Chair of the National Artists Advisory Council for Textile Center. Her art has been featured on MN Originals and in a variety of publications. For three years she has been awarded merit-based artist residencies at Vermont Studio Center. She is a 2023 Project Space recipient from the Kolman Reeb Gallery. \nTim Harding with Nina Martine Robinson \n\nDetail of installation: Stand Your Ground: Trayvon\nMartin Murder\, Stanford\, Florida\, February 26\, 2012.\nMedia: cotton knit sweatshirt fleece with rayon\nembroidery thread \nStatement: On the evening of February 26\, 2012\, a 17-year-old\, black male was walking home from a neighborhood convenience store\, having purchased a box of Skittles. After a brief confrontation with a neighborhood watch volunteer\, Trayvon Martin was killed with a close-range gunshot to his chest. The white\, male shooter\, George Zimmerman\, was eventually acquitted of the murder based on Florida’s Stand-Your-Ground Law. That evening Mr. Martin was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt with the hood up.  With the ensuing national news coverage\, the “hoodie” became an iconic symbol of the young\, black thug racial stereotype. A hoodie wearer\, if black\, could then become a target for preemptive gun violence. What was particularly alarming to me and so many others\, above and beyond the horrific event claiming the life of an innocent teenager\, was the legal sanction in Florida criminal codes that condoned the action Zimmerman took. The state’s Stand-Your-Ground Law actually creates an incentive to shoot first when encountering any situation where one\, however subjectively\, feels some vague sense of a threat. The NRA gun lobby\, as part of its aggressive misinterpretation of the Second Amendment\, has continued to promote these laws throughout the United States. \nBiography: Tim Harding earned a BA with a Studio Arts major in 1973 at Hamline University with additional coursework at the University of Minnesota\, Minneapolis College of Art & Design\, and Macalester College. In1975 he established a silk screen print textile studio\, Colorfield Fabrics. In 1983 he began a decades-long collaboration with his spouse/partner\, Kathleen Harding\, as Harding Design Studio\, in the art-to-wear movement. His current studio practice\, Tim Harding Studio\, is focused on large-scale commissioned textile art wall pieces. He has received visual arts fellowships from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, Arts Midwest\, and the NEA. Harding’s work is represented in numerous museum and corporate collections. \nNina Martine Robinson is Harding’s studio manager. In her own artistic practice\, Robinson creates site-specific textile installations utilizing discarded clothing to highlight her exploration into neurodiversity. \nPatricia Olson \n\nDetail of installation: The Montréal Massacre Memorial\,\nMontréal\, Québec\, Canada\, December 6\, 1989\,\nMedia: oil on panel paintings with a shelf of ceramic bowls\nholding glassine envelopes of morning glory seeds \nStatement: On December 6\, 1989\, a man with a rifle walked into a classroom at the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. He divided the women from the men\, released the men\, and shot six women there. He prowled the building\, searching out women\, ultimately killing 14 women and wounding 12 other people before he committed suicide. He was heard to say\, ”You’re all a bunch of feminists!” This particular tragedy affected me deeply. I wondered\, in my rage: What could I do? The next year\, on the first anniversary of what became known as the Montreal Massacre\, I made 14 cards\, one for each of the women killed\, and mailed them to 14 people as a remembrance. I also sent morning glory seeds\, asking the recipients to plant them in the spring as an act of renewal. On each anniversary through 1999\, I made a memorial piece for each of the 14 women killed in Montreal and mailed them. In this version of the Montreal Massacre Memorial\, I invite you to remember the lives and deaths of these 14 young women. If you are so moved\, please take an envelope with morning glory seeds and plant them this spring as an act of remembrance and renewal. \nBiography: Patricia Olson earned a BA in studio art “with distinction” at Macalester College in St. Paul. She received an MFA in Visual Studies from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She is a founding member of WARM\, the Women’s Art Registry of Minnesota. Exhibitions include Art Speaks\, a 170-year overview of Minnesota art and artists at the Minnesota History Center (2022); The House We Built: Feminist Art Then and Now at the Katherine E. Nash Gallery\, University of Minnesota (2013). Her war memorial and protest piece\, Operation Mopping Up\, was purchased by the Minnesota Museum of American Art in 2005. Olson’s work is in the permanent collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts\, Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota\, Minnesota Museum of American Art\, St. Catherine University\, Minnesota Historical Society and Walker Art Center. Olson is Professor Emerita at St. Catherine University. Beginning in 1999\, she taught\, with Elizabeth Erickson\, the Women’s Art Institute\, a summer intensive course for advanced women artists. In 2009 and in 2014\, she and Elizabeth Erickson were honored as Changemakers by the Minnesota Women’s Press for their work with the Women’s Art Institute. Olson is currently a member of Form+Content Gallery in downtown Minneapolis. \nKristina Fjellman\nStatement: Performance art asks the viewer to engage with artwork and concepts in a different way – instead of a static object in your space\, you are confronted with another person. It’s a fleeting\, collectively shared moment that cannot be duplicated or recreated no matter the similar components. In our current world where so much is recorded and on demand\, it’s these ephemeral elements that I find special and important in performance. Over the years\, gun violence has become commonplace in our daily lives. Despite the horrific act\, we sigh and shake our heads\, and then move on with our day. But the fabric of our society has still been torn.  This performance is about acknowledging that this subject matter is difficult\, but sharing the moment with others can bring us together\, help us heal\, and (hopefully) work to make change. \nBiography: Kristina Fjellman is a visual artist and performer and is drawn to creative projects that combine both of these passions. She is the co-founding member of the theater troupe\, The Winding Sheet Outfit\, and an ensemble member of Sandbox Theatre. She is a graduate of the College of St. Catherine with a MAED in Art and Theater Education\, has exhibited her sculpture in venues around the Midwest and Twin Cities\, and was a recipient of a Jerome Fiber Art Project Grant for 2010-2011 at the Minnesota Textile Center. \nForm+Content Mission Statement\nForm+Content Gallery nurtures diverse artistic practice and thoughtful dialogue. SUMMARY:Form + Content Presents: Ellie Kingsbury "Some Body"
DESCRIPTION:Ellie Kingsbury\, “Coco Dupree”\, mixed media\, 23”w x 17”h x 3”d\, 2023 \nEllie Kingsbury has long studied cultural expectations of the body\, largely through photographic images of “ordinary” people.  She has started a new chapter of this work by photographing burlesque performers.  Removed from the stage\, set onto plain black backgrounds\, and printed on large panels of silk\, these bodies undulate\, ripple\, and transform\, summoning thoughts of spirit over skin.  She furthers the effect by utilizing physical dimension as well as the dimension of time and space. \nWhat do we share with these sequined\, glamorous performers?  Do we equate the burlesque community as just bodies on a stage\, or do we contemplate the person behind the costume?  Do we all put ourselves on stage from time to time?  Do burlesque performers feel limited by the same cultural expectations that we live with?  When we watch burlesque do we understand a difference between sexualizing a body and celebrating sensuality? \nWorking with these questions\, the artist reception will feature everyday (non-burlesque) performers who will interact with the silks\, and invite the audience to do the same. \nPublic Reception: Saturday\, September 23\, 6:00 – 8:30 pm \nInterpretive performance will start around 6:45\, after which the audience will be invited to interact with the work. \n“Some Body” will also be included in Twin Cities Art Week\nSeptember 27 – October 1.  Visit www.tcartweek.org for more info. \nGallery hours: Thursday\, Friday\, Saturday\, 12:00 noon – 6:00 pm and by appointment. \nAll events are free and open to the public. \nForm+Content Gallery\nWhitney Square Building\, 210 North Second Street\, Suite 104\, Minneapolis\, MN 55401\nOne block north of Washington Avenue North and two blocks west of East Hennepin Avenue.\nParking is available on the street (metered) and in neighborhood parking ramps. She translates the vibrancy and complexity of reflected images using the sensual medium of oil stick and the gestural engagement of drawing. These works become expressions that hover between recognition and mystery. The artist plays on the double meaning of reflection\, attentive to the sometimes ambiguous images projected onto the water (is this real or mirrored\, is this what I see?) while engaging in meditations on the natural cycles of life and the intertwined journeys of the human and natural world. \n  \nArtist’s Biography \nJoyce Lyon has used drawing and digital imagery / artist’s books to address issues of identity\, ecology and ageing from a personal and female perspective. Recent exhibitions include Crosby Farm Park (Groveland Gallery\, Minneapolis)\, Passing Radiance and Some Pages for a Book of Hours (Form+Content Gallery) and Shifting Perspectives: Dialogue in Place with Andrea Thoma (University of Leeds\, England). In support of her work she has received grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, the Jerome Foundation and the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Her work is in many public and private collections\, including the Minnesota Historical Society; the Georgetown University Law Library\, Washington\, D.C.; the Florida Holocaust Museum / Tampa; the Federal Reserve Bank / Minneapolis; and the Weisman Art Museum\, Minneapolis. She was a founding member of the feminist collective\, WARM: Women’s Art Registry of Minnesota\, and has shown her work regularly at Groveland and Form+Content Galleries. In them\, she captures the isolation and resilience of a damaged but unbroken child making her way decisively towards adulthood. “My work has always been driven by a desire to create a safe place for myself and for those who consider themselves outsiders. We live in a world of cataclysm and upheaval\, not by accident but as a result of the crushing limitations and controls set by centuries of patriarchal misgovernance. Can we make a better place that includes all of us? For me that is one of the tasks of art: to create a world where everyone can breathe and live free. Through our art\, we can help make a world where differences flourish and love obliterates hate.”\n \nArtist’s Biography\nChris has had careers as a theater artist (writer\, director\, performer)\, ELL teacher\, and visual artist. She toured her one-woman trilogy of plays\, “Growing Up Queer in America”\, throughout the US from 1985 to 1996. As a teacher\, she was deeply engaged with and influenced by her students. Both of these careers have had a profound effect on her life as a visual artist. Chris has received grants from the Bush and Jerome Foundations\, as well as the Minnesota State Arts Board. Her work has been exhibited by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts\, ARC Gallery in Chicago\, Hopkins Center for the Arts\, as well as in Texas\, Kansas\, Michigan\, Oregon and throughout Minnesota. She will be showing a large body of her work at the Phipps Center for the Arts in the Fall. Chris has been a member of Form+Content since 2020. This is her second solo exhibition at the gallery. SUMMARY:Form + Content: The Laughter of Nature by Elizabeth Erickson
DESCRIPTION:THE LAUGHTER OF NATURE:\nNEW AND BELOVED WORK BY ELIZABETH ERICKSON\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForm + Content presents new and beloved paintings and poured drawings by Elizabeth Erickson\, curated by Joyce Lyon and Patricia Olson. \nExhibition Dates: March 30 – May 6\, 2023 \nOpening Reception Saturday\, April 1\, 1:00 – 3:00 pm\nFree and open to the public \n\n\n\n\nElizabeth Erickson’s intensely colored gestural works on canvas and paper focus on nuances of tone and stroke. Seeking with intention\, welcoming serendipity\, she works to open to meaning and spirit. In new works such as the series In the Boat\, the movement of paint strokes conjures the elemental experience of being in a small craft on big water. In the nine-foot square modular painting Temple to the Ebb and Flow\, the play of shape and gesture approaches a sacred geometry. A continuity throughout her work is the sense of discovery\, a lush\, joyful engagement with art and life. \n Artist’s Biography Elizabeth Erickson has worked as a painter\, poet and educator for over fifty years. She was a founding member of WARM (The Women’s Art Registry of Minnesota)\, was founder and Director of the Women’s Art Institute at Minneapolis College of Art and Design and St. Catherine University\, and is Professor Emerita at MCAD. Her work is included in many public\, corporate and private collections\, including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts\, Walker Art Center\, Macalester College\, General Mills and 3M. She has received grants from the Bush\, Ragdale and Mellon Foundations as well as the Minnesota State Arts Board. Among her exhibitions are Painting as Journey at St. Catherine University and Praising Creation at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. She was a member of Form+Content Gallery from 2013 – 2015.

SUMMARY:Form + Content Gallery: Chemistry and Glue
DESCRIPTION:A collaboration between Jon Neuse and Ellie Kingsbury\nWhen: January 27 – March 5\, 2022\nJon Neuse and Ellie Kingsbury have not been slowed by the pandemic\, in fact they have taken the opportunity to consider the power of curiosity and inquiry as an endless expanse of possibilities. \nBoth artists\, with studios in the Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art\, work independently with their loose methodologies and continually ask what more they can do with their mediums. Neuse has reworked old paintings and monotypes\, and Kingsbury has taken expired photographic paper to a new dimension. They are both intrigued by seeing how formal artistic principles are reconciled. In each of their work they share a process of evaluating line\, mass\, color\, value\, and subject\, using their preferred tools and materials. Experimentation is the life-force of their creativity\, always asking what’s next while not asking what anything means. \nCHEMISTRY AND GLUE \n\n\n\n\nForm and Content Gallery presents Chemistry and Glue\, an exhibition of new work by Jon Neuse and Ellie Kingsbury. \nJon Neuse and Ellie Kingsbury have not been slowed by the pandemic\, in fact they have taken the opportunity to consider the power of curiosity and inquiry as an endless expanse of possibilities. Both artists\, with studios in the Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art\, work independently with their loose methodologies and continually ask what more they can do with their mediums. Neuse has reworked old paintings and monotypes\, and Kingsbury has taken expired photographic paper to a new dimension. \nThey are both intrigued by seeing how formal artistic principles are reconciled. In each of their work they share a process of evaluating line\, mass\, color\, value\, and subject\, using their preferred tools and materials. Experimentation is the life-force of their creativity\, always asking what’s next while not asking what anything means. \nArtist’s Biography\nJON NEUSE \nPlayfulness\, experimentation and judgement are the principles behind my art. I begin all work whimsically not knowing how the work will look in the end. I experiment to make the visual relationships taut\, and I constantly evaluate if formal artistic elements resolve themselves into lasting relationships. \nIn these collages I attempted to create a counterpoint to Ellie’s experimental work. I worked with oil stick and pieces of old paintings and prints glued to black paper\, while she worked with white photo paper and chemicals. My work is more geometric and less organic than hers. \nI have been represented nationally in galleries from Connecticut to San Francisco and Chicago to Santa Fe. I have been in many solo and group exhibitions in area galleries\, including the Katherine E. Nash Gallery\, the Phipps\, the old Circa Gallery\, and the Traffic Zone Gallery. \nELLIE KINGSBURY \nMy goal is to stretch the capacity of photographic paper to new ends\, not to create an “image”. Working without a negative\, I strive for pure abstract form. Sharp contrasty edges sit alongside muffled tones\, creating a rather galactic look. \nI have used photography as my principle art form for the past 40 years\, and am currently incorporating mixed media into my projects. I am a recipient of the McKnight Fellowship and twice recipient of the Artist Initiative grant through the Minnesota State Arts Board. I have shown both nationally and internationally\, including group exhibitions in Beijing\, Helsinki\, San Francisco\, Philadelphia\, and Portland Oregon. I have had several solo exhibitions\, including the Bloomington Center for the Arts\, Cameraworks Gallery\, the Vine Arts Center. \nExhibition Dates: January 27 – March 5\, 2022 \nOPENING RECEPTION\nFriday\, January 28\, 2022 6:00 – 8:30pm\nVirtual artist talk will be uploaded on the Form and Content website by February 4\, 2022 \nGallery hours: Thursday – Saturday\, 12:00 – 6:00pm and by appointment\nFree and open to the public \nArtist Conversation: Virtual gallery tour with pre-recorded artist talk will be made available on the Form + Content website by February 4\, 2022 \nExhibition Hours: Thursday\, Friday\, Saturday\, 12:00 – 6:00 pm \nAppointments are not required. SUMMARY:Betula at Form+Content Gallery
DESCRIPTION:BETULA\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n June 27 – August 3\, 2019 \nForm + Content Gallery presents “Betula”\, exploring the tension of the unrestrained woods. There is both darkness and light\, fear and awe. By examining decaying birch trees\, Annie Irene Hejny questions the parallels between our human bodies and the natural world. \nOpening reception:  Thurs\, June 27th\, 6:00 – 8:00 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Statement \nLast September\, I spent two weeks at the Pine Needles Residency in Marine on St. Croix. Every day\, I walked in the woods and listened to the trees. In those woods\, language dissolved and I melted into the environment. I listened deeply and was called to a site along the trail where seven pieces of fallen birch bark lay on the forest floor. I respectfully gathered the decaying tree skins and carried them back to my art studio to continue our conversation.* \n The seven abstract artworks exhibited for “Betula” are directly inspired by the spirits of those fallen trees. Sitting with them\, I reflected on my past experiences in the woods. As a child\, the dark trees and the sounds of unseen life within the woods filled me with fear. During those years\, I was taught to obey the patriarchal systems that restricted my spirit and skewed my perception of the wild. As time has passed from childhood to adulthood\, my consciousness has altered and I am no longer a stranger in the woods. Today\, I practice looking directly into the shadows as an act of re-wilding my spirit. \n*I have borrowed the birch bark and I will return it to those woods. \n Artist Biography \nAnnie Irene Hejny studied at the University of St. Thomas and St. Catherine University\, earning a double-major B.A. in Elementary Education and Studio Art\, Summa Cum Laude. She has successfully completed nearly 50 commissioned projects for galleries\, private collections\, and public institutions\, locally and nationwide. The Women’s Art Institute (WAI) at St. Catherine University and the Women’s Art Resources of Minnesota (WARM) Mentor Program have been influential in her art journey. \nHer work has been included in many solo and group exhibitions (Minnesota Marine Art Museum\, Winona; Catherine G. Murphy Gallery\, St. Catherine University; Paul Whitney Larson Art Gallery\, University of Minnesota; Public Functionary\, Minneapolis; Minnesota State Fair Juried Exhibition; The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis and Galería Municipal Rosario Sanchez de Lozada in Querétaro\, México). Hejny was an artist-in-residence with Lanesboro Arts (2017)\, The Science Museum of Minnesota Pine Needles Residency (2018)\, and has been invited for a residency at the Grand Marais Art Colony (September 2019). She works at the Casket Arts Building in NE Minneapolis and is a current member of Form + Content Gallery.

SUMMARY:Form+Content Gallery ‎Layers of Time : Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a vibrant evening of art and community! \nForm + Content Gallery presents Layers of Time\, an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Clarence Morgan\, Stuart Nielsen\, and Howard Oransky. The exhibition celebrates the perspective of artistic change over time\, in recognition of the decades-long dedication each artist has brought to their studio practice. The artists also have a shared connection to the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota: Clarence Morgan is a member of the faculty\, Stuart Nielsen is an alumnus\, and Howard Oransky is a member of the staff. Morgan and Oransky showed their work together twice before at Form + Content Gallery: in Shared Distance in 2009 and in Patterns of Dialogue in 2016. \nClarence Morgan Statement \nI am interested in an approach to art making that explores the often-conflicted relationship between the decorative traditions in geometric patterns found in other cultures and western modernism. However\, the recent paintings\, prints and drawings avoid culturally specific subject matter in favor of a more elusive pictorial terrain of contemporary abstraction. I am interested in making work that serves as a catalyst for the imagination\, speculation and unscripted modes of knowing. Inasmuch\, my work attempts to reflect a broader generational curiosity where the familiar and unfamiliar both come together and potentially clash with each other in-order to open alternative portals of thought. \nClarence Morgan Biography \nClarence Morgan is a visual artist whose studio focus is centered on painting\, drawing and printmaking – often of an abstract nature. Utilizing random shapes and biomorphic forms within an intricate network of drawing\, Morgan’s work ranges from highly patterned organic painting compositions to meticulously articulated and somewhat minimal collage-drawings. He approaches each work intuitively allowing the forms and elements to find their own natural cadence and visual pulse. Morgan is a native of Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania where he also earned his MFA and formal education and currently resides in Minneapolis\, MN where he is a Professor of Art Practice at the University of Minnesota. \nStuart Nielsen Statement \nPaintings are the intersection of many elements\, factors\, signals\, and ingredients. Those ingredients include history and mystery\, patterns and puzzles. The painting process seesaws between systems and suspicions\, addition and subtraction. In the single work in this exhibition\, Strada (2015)\, layers of grids are employed to construct a pattern/image. This matrix contains a luminous array and configuration of spectral and radiant color. In viewing\, color registers an emotional response\, conscious curiosity and links us to the infinite cosmic regions. Paintings are always about discovery. \nStuart Nielsen Biography \nTrained as a painter Stuart Nielsen holds a BFA (1970) from the University of Minnesota. He has exhibited widely for over 50 years and his paintings are in many private\, corporate\, and public collections. He has also completed some 20 commissioned sculptures for public spaces and served on design teams for urban design projects. He received fellowships from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Bush Foundation. Teaching includes Minneapolis College of Art and Design and the University of Minnesota. He has served on the Minneapolis Arts Commission and the boards of Artspace\, Northern Clay Center and Highpoint Center for Printmaking. \nHoward Oransky Statement \nThere is an elegant\, peaceful space in my imagination\, full of balance and possibility. It is the edge where pictorial structure and improvisation share the same space at the same time. It is the moment when the work is leading me and I am ready to follow. \nHoward Oransky Biography \nHoward Oransky was born and grew up in Los Angeles\, surrounded by the work of artists his parents knew and admired\, such as Leopoldo Mendez and Arnie Mesches. He completed a BA in painting at California State University\, Northridge in 1981 and an MFA in painting at CalArts in 1984\, where he was mentored by John Baldessari. His studio is at Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art and he is a founding member of Form + Content Gallery in Minneapolis. Since 2011 he has been director of the Katherine E. Nash Gallery at the University of Minnesota. \nMay 16\, – June 22\, 2019 \nOpening reception: Saturday\, May 18\, 8:00 – 10:00 PM

DESCRIPTION:Form+Content Gallery presents Some Pages for A Book of Hours\, an exhibition of image and text\, artist’s books and photographs that explores and honors the final years of four women in her life: her mother\, cousin and two friends. \nIn the sixteen months between her father’s death and that of her mother\, Joyce Lyon was privileged to spend more time with her mother than she had during her previous adult life.  Their time together was full of challenge as well as sweetness and Lyon has no hesitation in naming it blessed. \nDrawing upon journal entries\, memory and photographs\, she has created twenty 22”x17” broadsides displayed on the wall that chronicle the experiences of their time together.  The work is bittersweet—they both knew where the path led— but ultimately joyful\, an affirmation of bravery and the possibilities of human connection. \nThe development of Some Pages for a Book of Hours was influenced by an exhibition at the Morgan Library in New York on the medieval Book of Hours: visually rich prayer books whose radically democratic structure\, including perpetual calendar\, prayers for each time of day and the Office for the Dead\, allowed the owner to worship independently.  In a secular manner\, Lyon applies the rhythms of attention and praise to the time she spent with her mother. \nThe works in this exhibition are created from a personal perspective but the hope is that the experiences chronicled will allow others to consider their own stories\, to find points of connection and difference\, and to be moved to celebrate our human potential. \nJoyce Lyon is an artist\, teacher and curator whose work focuses on memory and place.  She is represented in public and private collections internationally.  In Minneapolis she exhibits at Groveland and Form + Content Gallery.  She has received grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, Jerome Foundation and Minnesota Center for Book Arts and was a founding member of WARM: Women’s Art Resources of Minnesota.  She is Professor emerita at the University of Minnesota. \nSeptember 06 – October 13\, 2018 \nOpening reception:  Saturday\, September 8\, 6:00 – 8:30 PM
