SUMMARY:New Exhibition at Minnesota Center for Book Arts Explores the Storytelling Power of Quilts
DESCRIPTION:Quilt\, Not Quilt: The Afterlife is a new exhibition at Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA)\, on view from October 12th - December 2nd in the Open Book Cowles Literary Commons. This exhibition features artwork that repurposes old\, tattered quilts into new forms while still preserving the quilts’ heritage\, craftsmanship\, and legacy. The opening reception for Quilt\, Not Quilt will take place on Wednesday\, October 17 from 6-8pm. The reception includes an artist talk and poetry reading from 7-8pm in the Target Performance Hall on the second floor of Open Book\, as well as a meet and greet with the artists and poets. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. \nTwelve participating artists created paper\, poetry\, broadsides\, and other works from quilts\, drawing inspiration from the textiles themselves as well as from the stories they tell. The artists explored the political\, economic\, and social contexts surrounding the creation of the quilts\, making connections between the makers’ history and their work. The artwork created for the exhibition touches on themes of craftsmanship and labor\, scarcity and wealth\, and stories both recalled and forgotten. \nQuilt\, Not Quilt showcases artists from the MCBA community and beyond. Participating artists include Zoë Bird\, Katy Collier\, Tari “TJ” Goerlitz\, Georgia A. Greeley\, Darius Homayounpour\, Karen Kinoshita\, Dana LeMoine\, Rosa Maria de la Cueva Peterson\, Jerry McClelland\, Cathy Ryan\, Patty Wheeler Andrews\, and Morgan Grayce Willow. Each artist transformed their chosen quilt in unexpected and thought-provoking ways\, and the resulting exhibition both honors the practice of quilting and expands established notions about what it means to craft and make art. \nAs the largest and most comprehensive center of its kind in the nation\, Minnesota Center for Book Arts celebrates the book as a vibrant contemporary art form that takes many shapes. From the traditional crafts of papermaking\, letterpress printing\, and hand bookbinding to experimental artmaking and self-publishing techniques\, MCBA supports the limitless creative evolution of book arts through book arts workshops and programming for adults\, youth\, families\, K-12 students\, and teachers. MCBA is located in the Open Book building in downtown Minneapolis\, alongside partner organizations The Loft Literary Center and Milkweed Editions. To learn more\, visit www.mnbookarts.org. \n

SUMMARY:Freud on the Couch: Psyche in the Book
DESCRIPTION:Open Book Cowles Literary Commons\nOn view July 20 – September 30\, 2018 \n\n\nOPENING RECEPTION THURSDAY\, JULY 26; 6-8PM\nFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC\nCurated by Susanne Padberg\, Galerie Druck & Buch\, Vienna\, Austria \nThe science of psychoanalysis has always held a great fascination for artists – both as a medium for reflection and as an instrument for creating meaning. Indeed\, Freud’s “cultural work” (per Thomas Mann) remains a popular subject for many contemporary artists. Similar to how images in dreams are visualizations of hidden thoughts\, artistic creations probe the depths and meanings of our cultural self-perception\, they portray the forces shaping not only the individual but also the collective unconscious. We are surrounded by the issues Freud named and analyzed\, and we are also moved by them. The artwork in this exhibition is based directly or indirectly on these concepts and theories or are closely associated to specific themes. \nIt is striking how many psychoanalytic concepts Freud discovered and named; they can be found as source material or catalysts in contemporary book art\, such as: \nWish – Dream – Ego – Id – Memory – The Unconscious – The Oedipus Complex – Fixation – multiple personalities – (Victorian repression of) sexuality – Libido – Death Drive — and so on. \nIn addition\, the many techniques Freud developed\, such as the use of free association\, parapraxis\, and his discovery of transference & countertransference are aspects in the analytic process as well as potent inspirations for artistic work. The works in this show are based specifically on these concepts and theories. \nArtists include: Thorsten Baensch\, Sarah Bryant\, Crystal Cawley\, Ken Campbell\, Maureen Cummins\, Anne Deguelle\, Gerhild Ebel\, Stefan Gunnesch\, Karen Hanmer\, Anna Helm\, Susan Johanknecht\, M. M. Lum\, Jule Claudia Mahn\, Patrizia Meinert\, Simon + Christine Morris\, Didier Mutel\, Susanne Nickel\, Yasutomo Ota\, Waltraud Palme\, Veronika Schäpers\, Robbin Ami Silverberg\, Herbert Stattler\, Marian St. Laurent\, Ines von Ketelhodt\, Carola Willbrand\, and Sam Winston. \nFreud on the Couch was organized by Susanne Padberg of Vienna’s Galerie Druck & Buch\, which is located next door to the famous Berggasse 19\, the house where Freud founded psychoanalysis. The traveling exhibition comes to Minnesota Center for Book Arts from the Center for Book Arts in New York\, where it made its U.S. debut. Following its showing at MCBA\, the exhibition will continue on to the San Francisco Center for the Book. \nImage: Detail of Anatomy of Insanity by Maureen Cummins

SUMMARY:Formation: A Juried Exhibition of the Guild of Book Workers
DESCRIPTION:MCBA Main Gallery \n\n\nJune 15 – October 21\, 2018\nOPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY\, JUNE 22; 6-8PM\nARTIST TALK BY CURATOR AND PARTICIPATING ARTIST JACKIE SCOTT AT 7PM\nFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC\nFormation includes 50 works by members of the Guild of Book Workers. These works span the genre of “book arts”\, including artist books\, fine bindings\, and broadsides. The exhibition is juried by three outstanding artists and Guild members – Sarah Smith\, Coleen Curry\, and Graham Patten. The exhibition will travel to five locations around the country\, beginning at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and closing at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia\, PA. The annual Guild of Book Workers Standards of Excellence conference will coincide with the show being at MCBA\, hopefully providing opportunity for added conversation and exposure of the world of book production to a larger community of people. \nThe Guild of Book Workers was founded in 1906 to “establish and maintain a feeling of kinship and mutual interest among workers in the several hand book crafts.” Among its early members are well-known artist-craft workers such as bookbinder Edith Diehl and printers and typographers W.A. Dwiggins and Frederic W. Goudy. \nThe Guild still believes\, as did its founders\, that there is a responsibility to sustain the crafts involved with the production of fine books. Its members hope to broaden public awareness of the hand book arts\, to stimulate commissions of fine bindings\, and to stress the need for sound book conservation and restoration. One of the ways the Guild maintains interest in the crafts involved with book production is through a triennial national juried exhibition. \nImage: In-Between by Denise Carbone

SUMMARY:2018 Minnesota Book Artist Award: Works by Erica Spitzer Rasmussen
DESCRIPTION:February 1\, 2018 – March 13\, 2018\nOpen Book Cowles Literary Commons\nErica Spitzer Rasmussen is the 2018 Minnesota Book Artist Award winner for her work entitled The Love Affair. This annual award\, presented by Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA) and the Minnesota Book Awards\, and sponsored by Lerner Publishing Group\, recognizes a Minnesota book artist or book artist collaborative group for excellence of a new artistic work\, demonstrated proficiency and quality in the book arts through their body of work\, as well as an ongoing commitment and significant contributions to Minnesota’s book arts community. \nThe Love Affair is a mixed-media sculptural book handcrafted from pieces of old family letters. Rasmussen was inspired to create the piece when she inherited two handmade wooden boxes filled with love letters exchanged between her maternal grandparents in the 1930s. She delicately cut the letters apart and interspersed them\, binding them with a Coptic stitch. To retain the couple’s privacy\, Rasmussen cut the pages small enough that significant content couldn’t be read by others. She then placed the book inside one of the wooden boxes crafted by her grandfather\, in the twisted form of an infinity symbol\, to suggest that the couple might continue their communion from life to death. \nMembers of the award committee praised the project as “playful\, clever\, and reverential in its reference to the art of love letters\, 17th century fashion\, stitching\, and symbolism.” Said one judge\, “the classical essence in Rasmussen’s piece gives way to an avant-garde play on the notion of a book\, with the written letters rendered inaccessible\, untouchable and unreadable…and yet\, the narrative\, the history\, and the intimacy are mysteriously palpable.” \nErica Spitzer Rasmussen is an artist who creates handmade paper garments\, neckware and small editions of hand-bound books. She received her BFA and MFA at the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis)\, which included coursework in Mexico and Greece. Her current work explores issues of identity and corporeality. Rasmussen is a recipient of an Artist’s Assistance Fellowship (1999) and an Artist’s Initiative Grant (2015) from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Other professional highlights include a papermaking residency in Vienna\, Austria (2010)\, a solo exhibition in Mexico City\, Mexico (2012)\, and a bookbinding residency in Venice\, Italy (2016). Her work has been featured in such publications as FiberArts magazine\, Surface Design Journal\, American Craft magazine\, Hand Papermaking magazine\, and the Huffington Post. Rasmussen teaches studio arts as a full professor at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul\, Minnesota. Her artwork is exhibited and collected internationally. Visit her website. \nFor more information on Erica and to view past winners\, please visit our Minnesota Book Artist Award page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:New Patterns/Breaking Patterns - MCBA
DESCRIPTION:New Patterns/Breaking Patterns\nAugust 25 – October 22\, 2017\nCowles Literary Commons\, MCBA\nReception\, Sept 10\, 2 – 4pm\, 3pm performance\nFree and open to the public\nNew Patterns/Breaking Patterns\, an exhibit featuring new works by MN artists Robyn S. Awend and Robin Schwartzman. This two person exhibit explores various forms of gender identity through dimensional paintings and handmade paper from clothing. Wardrobe patterns and clothing scraps inspire these works in obvious and subtle ways commenting on gender stereotypes and softening the binary divide that has\, in many ways\, informed our current culture. \n“I borrow forms from some of the tools that I use on a regular basis and adorn them with patterns inspired by a selection of my favorite skirts and dresses that\, for practical reasons\, are saved for rare and special occasions\,” states Schwartzman \n“This new work speaks to gender identity as it becomes more transparent in our world today\, especially in young children. I used my child’s old clothing to make powerful statements that reflect the importance of living your truest self\,” states Awend. \nAs part of this exhibition\,  there will be special performances at 3 pm on September 10th by artists Anthony Neuman  (Build A Boy Workshop) and  Freya Richman  (Sailing Upwind). Performances are appropriate for ages 12+. \n\nVisual Artists:\nRobyn S. Awend uses words and word fragments to inspire her letterpress prints and interactive mixed media installations\, exploring various elements of identity and cultural influences. She invites the viewer to get up close and personal to experience the delicate nature of her work and often times leaves work unfinished for the viewer to complete. Awend holds a BFA from the University of Arizona and an MFA from the University of Dallas. Robyn recently completed a residency at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts where this series of work was created. Robyn is a past Rosalux Gallery member and a founding member of Form+Content Gallery in Minneapolis. \n\n\nRobin Schwartzman is an artist who creates playful\, often large-scale public art. She is best known for her interactive installations which have been featured at the Walker Art Center\, the Indianapolis Museum of Art\, the Northern Spark festival and the Art Shanty Projects\, to name a few. She is a recipient of a Jerome Foundation Fellowship for Emerging Artists as well as an Award for Innovation from the American Institute of Architects. Schwartzman’s obsession with leisure and play has led her to take inspiration from theme parks and miniature golf courses around the world. In this series of work\, Schwartzman explores the space between routine pragmatism and novel self-expression. On a daily basis\, her visual surroundings in an industrial shop conflict with her love of bright colors and fun prints.\n\nPerformers:\n\nAnthony Neuman works as a theater maker and teacher in the twin cities. He has been the director of the youth performance program at the Sabes Jewish Community Center for five years\, and teaches preschool in the same center during the school year. Anthony also facilitates conversations with fellow educators and caregivers about mindfulness in language\, specifically around gender identity. He has been seen on stage and worked as a playwright with 20% Theater Company\, Freshwater Theater Company\, the Twin Cities One Minute Play Festival\, and more. His piece\, “Build a Boy Workshop\,” is a storytelling of his own gender journey in which he really disassembles his transition with just enough humor to keep it all cuddly. \n\n\nFreya Richman is a theater artist – teacher\, director\, actor and producer of arts experiences working throughout the Twin Cities. She has collaborated with some of the area’s leading theater companies and developed creative workshops for youth at numerous schools and non-profits\, including Steppingstone Children’s Theater and Linwood Monroe Arts Plus School in St. Paul. For seven years served as Director of Cultural Arts at the St. Paul Jewish Community Center\, producing music and performing arts series\, an annual Jewish book festival\, visual arts exhibitions and more to engage center members and the broader community. Most recently her theatrical endeavors have taken her to 20% Theater Company\, serving as a creative consultant and writing and performing her original work “Sailing Upwind” exploring her experience of gender transition in the Naked I performance series.

He uses letterpress printing and antique wood type to express his socio-political views about such topics as the vulnerability of children\, his African heritage\, and community activism. Much of his work centers around literary works by people of cultural heritage and civil rights activists\, raising questions of race\, class\, and equality in American society. As a public artist\, his art is not only the created work\, but also the process of facilitating engagement. \nThis programming is presented in conjunction with the 2017 Book Art Biennial\, Shout Out: Community Intervention\, Independent Publications\, and Alternative Distribution\, and is made possible through the Joyce Awards\, a grant-funded program through the Joyce Foundation that supports artists of color in major Great Lakes cities. The Chicago-based foundation has awarded nearly $3 million to commission 55 new works since the program started in 2003.
