SUMMARY:Forum: Water Over the Dam
DESCRIPTION:St. Anthony Falls is the only waterfall on the Mississippi River\, the birthplace of Minneapolis and the centerpiece of the St. Anthony Falls Historic District. While the falls is often celebrated as a centerpiece of beauty and history for our City\, less recognized are the myriad demands on the water flowing over the falls\, including power generation and research into future ways to enhance and protect the Mississippi River. \nWater Over the Dam will present a discussion of the different ways that our community depends on water flowing over the falls. We’ll talk about the falls from the Native American perspective\, the industrial perspective\, the recreational perspective and the economic one. Come join us! Light refreshments will be provided. \nDoors open at 5:30\, with the program starting at 6.

People Serving Peopleis always in need of diapers\, and any size is welcome.  YouthLink needs hats\, mittens and scarves\, as well as any type of outerwear for youth ages 16-24. Donations of money or gift cards can also be dropped off. \nIf you love to sing\, join the Friends of the Mill District Singers who will be caroling during the Winterfest. We will begin at the Guthrie\, and will sing at various locations along 2nd Street. Join us! All are welcome! You don’t have to be a member of the Singers to join us. We just want to sing together. \nClaudia can be reached at claudia@millcitymedia.org

SUMMARY:Riverfront Vitality Forum
DESCRIPTION:NEWS RELEASE\nMay 16\, 2016\nMedia Contact Kathleen Boe\ne / kathleen.boe@minneapolisriverfront.org\np / 612.746.4987\nReturn to a more natural river? River ecology after the lock \nJoin us for the next Riverfront Vitality Forum: 6 pm to 7:30 pm\, May 26\, 2016 at the Mill City Museum\nMinneapolis\, Minn. – Nearly a year ago\, in an unusual move\, the lock at Upper Saint Anthony Falls was closed to boat and barge traffic. The closure was the result of an act of Congress\, designed\, in part\, to slow the spread of invasive carp up the Mississippi River in Minneapolis\, to rivers and lakes beyond.\nInevitably\, the closure and the end of dredging the area for a shipping channel is having an impact on the area’s ecology. What is the impact on the shape of the river bottom? How are invertebrates and mussels impacted? What is the impact on water chemistry? \nThe Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership\, the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization and the St. Anthony Falls Lab and River Life Program at the University of Minnesota have partnered to delve into these questions. \nJoin us\, along with a panel of experts to discuss the kinds of impact we may see on our river environment: \n\nMike Davis\, River Ecologist for the Minnesota DNR\nCarrie Jennings\, Director of Research and Planning Director for the Freshwater Society\nJane Mazack\, Ph.D. candidate in Water Resources Science at the University of Minnesota\nAlan Robbins-Fenger\, Chief of Resource Management for the National Park Service\, Mississippi National River and Recreation Area\nScott Vreeland\, Vice President of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and longtime river advocate\n\nThe Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership is a state-chartered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that facilitates and supports coordinated revitalization of the Mississippi Riverfront in the City of Minneapolis. MRP brings diverse community partners together to shape a vital role for the Mississippi River in enhancing the economic\, social and natural life of the City of Minneapolis and to ensure that this development benefits all segments of the community. \nFor more information\, visit https://www.minneapolisriverfront.org/\n###
