These paintings are created by embedding photographs printed on tissue paper in the wax as collage. Artist Jodi Reeb developed this new body of artwork after researching how to support the pollinator/bee species in Minnesota. \nReeb has been painting with encaustic paint (molten beeswax\, pigment and resin) for over 15 years. These mixed-media works have the luminosity of beeswax while maintaining the graphic nature of photography. It was natural for Reeb to partner with the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum as a sanctuary for bees with several hives\, acres of diverse pollinator habitat and an outreach education program partnered with the University of Minnesota. \nTo expand on this series\, the artist has also included landscape images that are a superimposition of double exposures taken on film to create a single image and printed on tissue paper.  These photos were taken at the Prairie Wetlands Center near Fergus Falls\, Minnesota\, during a Hinge Arts Residency awarded through Springboard for the Arts. \nArtist Statement \nWorking with beeswax as my primary painting medium has me very concerned about the recent decline of the pollinator population. Modern encaustic is primarily composed of 85% natural wax\, produced by honeybees. There are over 400 species of native bees in Minnesota and pollinators are declining at alarming rates due to lack of habitat and pesticide use. This installation of paintings is a way to celebrate our region’s unique pollinator diversity and our individual and collective responsibility to ensure that future generations get to experience fields of wildflowers abuzz with pollinators. \n \nJodi Reeb\, Transcendence\, Mixed media \nArtist Biography \nJodi Reeb lives in Minneapolis\, Minnesota creating art for over 27 years as a full-time artist.  She is the recipient of the 2021 Artist’s Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. In 2021\, she was chosen for the Hinge Arts Residency program through Springboard for the Arts in Minnesota. Her work has been shown nationally\, receiving numerous awards and is in many private and corporate collections nationally.  She received a Bachelor’s degree from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design where she instructed printmaking in the Continuing Studies program for over 9 years.  Reeb creates her mixed-media paintings and sculptures in the co-op studio at the Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art.  She is a Golden Paint Artist Educator as well as an R & F Paint Core Artist teaching monthly workshops in acrylic and encaustic paint. \n  \nMission Statement \nTraffic Zone Gallery is operated by Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art. Circle\, oval\, ellipse\, all share this in common\, their circumference defined by one line. It seems straight forward\, yet this one simple shape describes so much of our lives and the world in which we live: circle of life\, circle of thought\, circle of time – full circle. Circles permeate our existence – from a single cell\, to a group of friends\, to a far flung galaxy. Circles imply connection – who is included\, who is excluded\, and ideally\, how groups might connect and interact. DESCRIPTION:Playfulness\, experimentation and judgement are the principles behind my art.  I begin all work whimsically not knowing exactly how it will look in the end.  I experiment to make the visual relationships taut and constantly judge if formal artistic elements are resolving themselves into lasting relationships.  It is difficult to make abstract art\, because\, as I see it\, there are no–nor should there be–rules for how to create.  I love to see something I have completed.  But\, it is the process in reconciling the relationships between line\, mass\, color\, value and subject that most intrigue me. \n My imagery is drawn from remembered experiences.  I complete work in my studio relying on memories of places and events. \n\nJon’s work has been placed in the following museums: Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art\, St. Joseph\, MO • DuPage Children’s Museum\, Wheaton\, IL • Ellen Noel Museum of the Permian Basin\, Odessa\, TX • El Paso Museum of Art\, El Paso\, TX. Free and open to the public. \ntrafficzoneart@gmail.com\nhttps://www.trafficzoneart.com/ \nWith a career that spans over 50 years\, Harriet Bart has produced a prolific body of multidisciplinary artwork. Throughout\, her early work in textile and continued fascination with the written word informs both her process and artistic outcome. Material Matters is an intimate exhibition that features five select works\, all utilizing cloth and text. These works reference topical experiences of war\, migration\, displacement\, erasure\, and looming threats to democracy.  Included in the exhibition is an excerpt from the site-specific installation\, Leavings/Belongings\, a durational work focused on the continued crisis of women and children refugees in the United States.  A large-scale installation of this work was most recently shown at SITE: Santa Fe in the exhibition DISPLACED\, 2020.  In addition\, three works on canvas will be on view\, including Sunset Gates\, 2020.  This work uses paint\, collage\, stitching and stencil\, incorporating text from Emma Lazarus’s poem\, The New Colossus\, inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty. The piece speaks to current discord over issues of immigration and the erosion of the American values of freedom and hospitality. The sweeping theatricality of Bart’s work invites the viewer to make layers of associations\, to ask questions about the self\, culture and history\, and calls on us to reexamine and remember—to not forget. \nArtist Biography \nHarriet Bart (Minneapolis MN) is a conceptual artist working across disciplines and media that addresses urgent contemporary issues including the devastations of war\, the complexities of memorialization\, the emotional dimensions of space\, and the gendering of labor. Bart’s artwork has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and Germany\, and she has completed more than a dozen public art commissions in the United States\, Japan\, and Israel.  She has received fellowships from the Bush Foundation\, McKnight Foundation\, MacDowell Colony\, Virginia Center for Creative Arts\, Yaddo\, NEA Arts Midwest\, and the Minnesota State Arts Board\, and three Minnesota Book Awards. Her work is part of numerous museum\, university\, and private collections including the Jewish Museum\, Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Minneapolis Institute of Art\, National Gallery of Art\, National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Walker Art Center\, and the Weisman Art Museum. Any material is fodder for her art making.  Primarily a painter\, she also works with discarded items and three-dimensional forms\, glass and vintage beads\, monoprinting and collage. She has exhibited all over the world and is known locally for her lushly painted cakes\, still lifes and figurative paintings. Her studio in the Traffic Zone Center for Visual Arts is brimming with colorful\, joyful paintings and sculpture\, outrageous props\, vivid paints and a grand variety of tools. Her work has traveled across the United States in the National Sketchbook Project Tour\, across the ocean to Israel\, at In Book Form\, and was shown locally in The Northside Today: Memory\, Place\, Home and Community at The Homewood Studios and the Minnesota State Fair\, to name a few. Recently she participated in Diverse Inquiries: Curious Passions at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts\, Art4Shelter\, Burnet Gallery\, SAMEE Sustainable Acts: Mother Earth’s Embrace at Hamline University\, Or Chadash\, A New Light\, Unfiltered\, The Waters of Creation and most recently\, Voices of Wisdom.  Gratitutions\, a series of 100 small painting on quotidian moments was presented as a solo show at Traffic Zone Center for Visual Arts Gallery and repeated as Gratitutions Revisited two years later in St. Paul. Installation\, curbside pickup or delivery is available. \nArtist Statement \nI am a painter and printmaker venturing into the realm of sculpture as a way to create a narrative of physically experiencing the work. I am painting organic shapes that are elevated off the wall moving in groupings such as circles\, seeds and biomorphic forms that oscillate between painting and sculpture. I’m painting with encaustic (beeswax and damar resin) on acrylic panels and primed aluminum as well as incorporating metal leafing\, rust and copper patina. My goal in this new series of work is for a pushing-pulling\, folding-opening and evolving\, its parts beginning to take form into something new\, connected yet still raw. Combinations are discovered\, explored\, proposed\, rejected and accepted as I combine individual shapes to create the whole. Through this approach\, I discover relationships between the natural elements of a place creating rhythms\, patterns and forms that are nature-based as well as abstract. Process and repetition are also an important part of my work and is a constant subtext throughout. The designing and making of the work becomes something of a meditation\, a common theme throughout my paintings and installation works in part evidenced by simplicity of line and negative space. \nArtist Biography \nMy artwork has been shown nationally receiving numerous awards and is in many private and corporate collections. I was the recipient of the Artist’s Initiative Grant funded by Minnesota State Arts Board in 2018.  I received a BFA degree from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design\, MCAD\, where I instructed printmaking for over 9 years.  I am a CORE instructor for R&F Handmade Paints teaching monthly workshops in my studio as well as nationally. I also offer workshops as a GOLDEN Acrylic Arts Educator\, Ampersand Arts Ambassador and Silverbrush Educator. DESCRIPTION:Traffic Zone Gallery presents Phatic Food\, an exhibition of paintings by Bonnie Heller. Phatic is an adjective for “speech used to express or create an atmosphere of shared feelings\, good will and sociability.” For decades Bonnie Heller’s work has included foods in celebratory situations — still lifes with misshapen fruit overflowing bowls\, tabletop landscapes and most notably and consistently — cakes. Lushly frosted or plain\, cakes and the celebrations surrounding them are filled with the goodwill and joy of conversation. Phatic Food extends the metaphor to other foods — soups\, wines\, full meals and always cakes. The editing process varies due to earthquakes\, fires\, floods and those deliberately done by man. In spite of the origin we’re still able to marvel at the beauty of the Rocky Mountains\, the Sierra Madre\, Swiss Alps or the wastelands of the deserts. The prairie is not the easiest thing to love; the sublime of it is one of patience and looking. It can feel impossible to depict\, for the prairie refuses to be framed in. Ellie Kingsbury\, a life-long Midwesterner\, has captured the spirit of land and sky in her photographs. They lean into each other\, each creating the horizon of the other. Vastness of space gives way to feelings of motion\, the vital essence of being everywhere and nowhere at the same time. \n \nEllie Kingsbury\, Sandhill Cranes Migrating\, photograph \nArtist Biography\nEllie Kingsbury has used photography as her principle art form for the past 40 years\, and has recently incorporated mixed media into her projects. Her ideas have always been rooted in the beauty and life force found in ordinary places and beings. Ellie received a McKnight Fellowship for her project “Automatic Beyond Belief”\, a story of Industrial Design Age kitchen appliances. She is also a twice recipient of the Artist Initiative grant through the Minnesota State Arts Board. She has shown both nationally and internationally\, including group shows in Beijing\, Helsinki\, San Francisco\, Philadelphia\, and Portland OR. She has been included in many group shows in Minneapolis area galleries\, including the Katherine Nash Gallery\, the Catherine G. Murphy Gallery\, the Phipps\, and the Bloomington Arts Center. She has had solo shows at the Vine Arts Center in 2016 and Form + Content Gallery in 2018. \nArtist Statement\nThe prairie — what’s considered flyover to some is a wonderment in others. The prairie is about undulation. Winds billow\, the land flows and swells\, the sky goes from calm to calamity in the blink of an eye. Summer surges in verdant growth\, which gives way to a slate gray winter\, and when spring comes it’s not just something you see but a vibration you feel. The prairie is not so much a thing as it is a spirit. The prairie refuses to be boxed in\, which can be frustrating to an artist.  One’s tendency is to use a tree or a fence to anchor the picture\, but you’ve only recorded things within the prairie\, not the prairie itself. My work relays land and sky in metered form; they swell and pulse in rhythmic modes. Beyond the startling detail\, Jonathan applies his digital process in ways that transcend some accepted limitations of conventional film and digital imaging techniques—such as unwrapping a 360° room interior or presenting a very large group portrait that is viewable as individual portraits. These immersive prints grant the viewer permission to intuitively explore the scenes with a freedom not usually experienced with conventionally sized and shaped photographs. This exhibition is an opportunity to view these non-traditional images printed at mural scale. Previously these extremely large photographs were viewable only on-line using specialized server software jointly developed by Google\, NASA\, and CMU: https://jonathangross.art/#/trafficzone/. \n\n \nJonathan Gross\, Wallpaper (11′ 5″ X 2′) \nArtist Biography \nJonathan Gross has exhibited both 2D and 3D works in a number of group exhibitions at the Tychman Shapiro Gallery from 2013 through the present\, two group shows at Minneapolis College of Art and Design\, and in the 2017 Minnesota Fair Fine Arts Exhibition. This is his first solo show—and only the third time he will have on display large-scale prints using the digital imaging process with which he has been working since 2010. Gross also designs theater projections. This exhibition is an exploration of how to discover possibilities of painting\, collage\, and sculpture\, through an intervention upon a book. A language dictionary\, this familiar\, user friendly object; this comforting collection of words and cultural identities; this soft\, thought provoking object; carries a quietly mysterious power of addressing politics\, economics\, and identities. The exhibition is a depiction of Kittelson’s compelling fascination with the material process of transforming a book into painting\, and collage – by cutting and covering it with encaustic\, rust\, tar\, gold leaf\, metallic leaf\, adhesive letters – thus restoring and transforming it into a sculptural object to be displayed on a plinth\, while remaining a book in its appearance and meaning. \nArtist Statement \nFor several years\, I have been pondering how as an artist to draw together threads of my thinking about human conflict and violence between different human groups. I decided to address this universal philosophical question by abstracting an ancient myth – Tower of Babel – where people spoke different languages and could not understand each other\, today Trump vs. Kim Yong-un. By altering and transforming language dictionaries – stores of identity – I create Babel Books and Babel Libraries. Each dictionary is an exploration of crossing the boundary between an everyday object\, a book; and painting\, collage\, and sculpture. Displayed\, they present a possibility relevant to our time – a peaceful co-existence\, where no language dominates. Vesna Kittelson \n  \n \nVesna Kittelson\, Language Dictionaries III\, 2017\, altered books \nArtist Biography \nVesna Krezich Kittelson was born in Bosnia-Herzegovina\, and is of Croatian descent.  She grew up in Split\, Croatia where she obtained a B.A. in Law. Later she obtained a B.A. in Fine Arts and an M.A. in Design\, both from the University of Minnesota. Kristie Bretzke’s portraits are simple\, quiet and introspective. Her focus is specific and personal. Her current exhibition\, Coal Room\, features portraits inspired by the moody\, cool light of the basement coal room at an artist retreat on the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland. This exhibition is a culmination of many years of intense study and obsessive observation. Bretzke’s work has been described as strikingly straightforward and classical\, but her slightly voyeuristic perspective lends a modern edge. \nArtist Biography \nKristie Bretzke is a painter and sculptor with a BFA degree from the University of Minnesota. Kristie has had solo exhibitions at Groveland Gallery\, XYandZ Gallery\, Premier Gallery\, and the Traffic Zone Gallery\, all in Minneapolis. Kristie has participated in numerous group exhibitions\, including Winfield Gallery in California and Kaiping Art Museum in Kaiping\, China. She has been an artist-in-residence at the Kunstlerhaus in Salzburg\, Austria\, CAMAC in Marnay sur Seine\, France and Palazzo Rinaldi in Noepoli\, Italy. DESCRIPTION:Patrick Pryor\, Maquettes\, 2017\, painted wood\, 23 x 4 x 4 in. \n\nMINNEAPOLIS\, MN (October 20\, 2017) Traffic Zone Gallery presents Constructions\, an exhibition of new work by Patrick Pryor. Ever intent on exploring the potentials for creativity and expression with painting and sculptural processes\, Pryor’s new series of works demonstrates his findings. In these works\, Pryor juxtaposes intuitive mark making and systematic patterns\, layering and erasure. Just as Pryor’s new ventures into three-dimensional work entail processes of construction or building\, so do his acrylic and graphite works on canvas. For his large paintings\, Pryor’s current artist practice begins with intuitive mark and pattern making\, which he outlines with tape. Over time\, the paint he applies builds up along tape in slight relief creating a crisp edge. Pryor photographs the results and generates a digital file of that image. He then further manipulates the pattern digitally\, or physically by cutting up transparencies of the digital file so he can use the same pattern to discover vastly different results. In the completed paintings\, after the painted layers are sanded down\, he applies graphite on top or highlights painted lines in a grey so they appear as drawn graphite lines. \nArtist Statement\n“Creating this strata of work and strata of material\,” Pryor explains\, “is like burying something\, then unearthing it again. The process becomes one that is similar to archaeological discovery. While the focus of the creative process is a back and forth between intuition and a highly planned\, structured arrangement of lines on the canvas\,” he continues\, “the sense of discovering something originally hidden from view\, that represents a remnant or part of the history of the canvas\, is what interests me.” Pryor’s sculptural works take their cues from his paintings. Using plaster\, wood and graphite\, he generates intuitive forms based on the paintings\, transforming them into three-dimensional objects. Once again\, he says\, “the graphite lines\, layers of paint and sanding to reveal remnants of the original lines is a celebratory part of my process. The sculptures are\, then\, another physical manifestation of the almost sculptural-like layering of paint that happens on my canvases.” \nArtist Biography\nPatrick Pryor works from a place of spontaneous intelligence. He generates bold statements that engage mind and heart by using color and gesture to explore abstract ideas of humor\, beauty and absurdity. A former environmental engineer and science educator\, he also draws from that experience by abstracting forms and patterns from the natural world. Site-specific installations of Pryor’s work have appeared in more than 140 locations in Minnesota and Canada. In this new series of work\, Reeb has created circular works in an installation that oscillate between painting and sculpture. The artist uses contrasting materials and substrates made of wood\, found objects and circular acrylic panels using encaustic (beeswax) and acrylic paint as well as metallic paints that transform or react when combined. Combinations are discovered\, explored\, proposed\, rejected and accepted as part of the art-making process. Components are moved around in varying compositions. These paintings are created to be part of a series and some are partnered through discovery to utilize the entire gallery wall space. The disk paintings will flow from one wall to another continuously\, disregarding where walls conjoin as a way of exploring contrasting and common elements that form connections. Through this approach Reeb discovers relationships between the elements creating rhythms\, patterns and visual textures that are nature-based as well as abstract. \nArtist Statement \nCircles have been a subject matter for me for over 20 years. I identify with the obvious references to the shape; centered\, wholeness\, sphere\, etc. However\, the attraction for me is the negative space that a circle or sphere evokes through shadow and space. I appreciate the fact that a circle is both an organic and a geometric shape. I apply changes in texture and color by painting diverse surfaces with materials such as beeswax and metallic paints that patina when they interact and create something new. I begin with a layer of paint or a structure\, and from that point on\, it becomes about process; making marks and textures\, applying materials\, responding to each action with a reaction. In this way\, spontaneous connections are valued as highly as are planned compositions.  As each work evolves\, it gains an identity that eventually solves itself through process\, positive and negative space and dimension. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design where she instructed printmaking in the Continuing Studies program for over 9 years. Linking #BLM\, austerity governance and the Commodity Fetish to their colonialist roots\, the work challenges the authority of historical cartography and contemporary statistics. Its appropriations\, collage and performances reconfigure territories\, symbology and propaganda. Universal Capital puts the value of art itself in question as prints are employed in protest zones\, galleries and other seats of power. \nSean Smuda is an artist\, curator\, photographer and writer living in Minneapolis\, Minnesota. He works in a variety of mediums including collage\, video\, and performance. Recent projects have taken place in Iraq\, on Wall Street\, and at the Minnesota State Capitol. His work is in the permanent collection of the Walker Art Center.
