Friends Check Out Tower Tunnel’s Acoustics; “Like A Cathedral”

North Loop resident Wendy Holmes and her husband, David Frank, have a group of long-time friends who know how to keep things interesting.

“We’re four couples, we’ve been friends for years and we love doing goofy, kind of unusual things,” Wendy said. “This group of people challenged ourselves in 2025 to do a creative activity every quarter.”

In the first quarterly challenge of the year, one of the friends chose pottery-making for the group. For the second quarter, it was Wendy’s turn to choose and she finally got to try something she’s been wondering about.

“I’ve been walking through this tunnel for years and I’ve always noticed that the acoustics were amazing,” she said. “And I thought I should get a group of people together to sing in the tunnel and just see how people react and what it would sound like.”

The tunnel is in the historic Tower Lofts, built in 1920 as a flour bag factory. But Wendy and her friends found out, the old building can also carry a tune.

“The sound is a little bit like a cathedral,” she said. “It’s a smaller version of a cathedral but it definitely has that echo effect when you’re in there.”

Not all the friends are trained singers–or even comfortable singing–but their melodious versions of Dona Nobis Pacem and the Canoe Song provided lighthearted entertainment for the group and passersby alike.

“I’m just grateful for a neighborhood that has cool spaces like this,” Wendy said.
