A community-led event, Juneteenth – Celebrating Freedom Day features family activities, a parade, music and dance performances and great local food!

Join us for Juneteenth – Celebrating Freedom Day returning to Bethune Park in North Minneapolis this Saturday, June 15.

The all-day celebration is preceded by a parade for everyone to join or watch. The parade begins at 10 am at the parking lot north of the Minneapolis Public Schools building, heading south on Fremont Avenue to Bethune Park.

From 11 am to 6 pm, enjoy great live music, dance, DJs and other entertainment at the park, along with youth activities, a historical sharing area, and merchandise and food for purchase. Event details, a stage schedule and volunteer opportunities are available at www.minneapolisparks.org/juneteenth.

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and the Juneteenth Legacy Committee host this day-long, community-led celebration. Bethune Park is the site of the first Freedom Day celebration in Minneapolis, led by two of its original founders, Michael Chaney and Spike Moss.

The 2019 Juneteenth Stage: 

  • Music from Christopher Williams, MAXX Band, Blvck Madonna, 4 Play, Niles, Mac Turner, Nuny Da Gypsy, SoloStar and Swagg Movement / Xross
  • The Art of Dance Studio, Mt. Vernon Choir, New Salem Choir, Harrison Park Dance Group and DJ performers
  • Storytelling, history, poetry and more

Youth activities:
Bounce house, bike rodeo (kids should bring their bikes and helmets), Pop-up Park offerings and much more.

More than 50 vendors:

Including food stands offering jerk chicken, rib tips, walking tacos, fish, chicken, hot dogs and ice cream.

About Juneteenth

Also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. It is one of two freedom celebrations held throughout the United States; the Fourth of July is the other.
