Metro – 35W@94 Downtown to Crosstown in Minneapolis: 2017-2021 construction

Upcoming traffic impact details

Construction prep work is in full swing on the 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown project. The next couple of weeks are filled with a fair amount of traffic impacts depending on your travel route.  Here’s the scoop on the upcoming lane, ramp and bridge closures:

Ramp closures

Downtown S 12th St. to southbound I-35W

Beginning Mon, Sept. 11, the ramp from S 12th St/Hwy 65 in downtown Minneapolis to southbound I-35W will be reduced to two lanes through late 2017

31st St. to Southbound I-35W

Beginning Tue, Sept. 12, the 31st St. ramp to southbound I-35W will close. Crews will be working on the underground utilities in this area so motorists should follow the posted detour of 31st St. to Stevens Ave. to 36th St. We expect to keep the ramp closed through early October.

Southbound I-35W to 35th St.

We plan to close the SB I-35W ramp to 35th St. the week of Sept.18. CenturyLink will be relocating their private utility line. The work, is expected to take about a week.

Lane closures

MnPASS northbound shoulder

Crews will be closing the northbound MnPASS shoulder into downtown Minneapolis (starting around 24th St.) by 5 a.m. on Mon, Sept. 11. The shoulder is expected to reopen in early 2018.

I-35W at 40th St.

In mid-September, there will be periodic lane closures in both directions of I-35W near 40th St. while Xcel Energy does some utility work.  In addition, there will be a seven-day closure of the northbound I-35W right lane.

Bridge Closures

Franklin Ave. Bridge

Construction crews are closing the Franklin Ave. bridge over I-35W by 5 a.m. on Mon, Sept. 18 for reconstruction. The newly constructed bridge is expected to reopen some in mid-2018. When crews begin demolition of the bridge, there’ll be lane restrictions and weekend closures on I-35W. View the Franklin Ave. bridge detour map for motorist and pedestrian detour routes.

Portland Ave. Bridge

We’ll be closing the Portland Ave. bridge over I-94 and I-35W in late September for pier work. The bridge will be closed to motorists for two months. However, emergency vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists will still be able to use the bridge. Detour route and additional information will be sent out in advance of the closure.

Please note that construction activities are tentative and subject to change depending on weather and unforeseen impacts.
