Pedestrians Getting Bonus Time On West River Parkway
While the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board has taken down most of the barricades around the city that allowed pedestrians to use them for social distancing, a section of West River Parkway that leads in and out of the North Loop remains closed to vehicle traffic for at least a few more weeks.
It’s because of the continuing work on the new park project by the Stone Arch Bridge, known as Water Works.
Dawn Sommers, spokesperson for the Park Board, said some of the pedestrian and bike trails in that area will need to be rerouted to create a better traffic flow around Water Works. So starting in mid-August, trail users will be diverted onto West River Parkway for about two weeks while those trails are being reconstructed.
Since West River Parkway doesn’t have any turn-offs between Portland Avenue South and 4th Avenue North, the entire section will remain closed to vehicle traffic until this latest work is finished–likely in early September.
