Cha-Ching! Why Rise Bagel Has Such An Old Register

The antique cash register on the counter of Rise Bagel in the North Loop can’t calculate change or swipe credit cards. In fact, it doesn’t even hold any cash.

But it does hold a lot of memories for the two sisters who own the shop, Jen and Kate Lloyd.

It’s been in their family since the 1930s when their grandfather used it in a grocery store and a bar he operated on the Iron Range. Their grandmother later opened a children’s clothing store and used the same cash register to handle all her transactions.

In the video above, Kate Lloyd talks about what it means to her and her sister to have it in the North Loop.
