Controversial Project Is No Longer Moving Forward Here
After weeks of community meetings and passionate pushback from opponents, a Virginia developer has dropped its plans to buy the former Star Tribune printing facility in North Loop and convert it into a data center.
“The Minnesota Star Tribune remains committed to maximizing the value of the Heritage Printing Facility for the benefit of our community and our journalism,” said spokesperson Chris Iles.
The North Loop Neighborhood Association helped facilitate several community meetings about the data center proposal over the past several weeks. NLNA president Mary Binkley said, “We’re surprised and relieved. We hope that the next potential buyer has plans that will benefit the people who live in the neighborhood.”
North Loop’s Instagram and Facebook followers had a big reaction to today’s news. While an overwhelming majority cheered the fact that the project is being abandoned, many chimed in with suggestions of what should go there instead: grocery store, drug store and more housing were among the most common.
