The City of Minneapolis has approved the closure of the Hennepin Energy Recovery Center (HERC), which is located in the North Loop.
Students pursuing Masters Degrees in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Minnesota are studying potential future uses of the site. They’ll present their mid-semester ideas and ask for feedback from the public.
The HERC, (commonly referred to as “the garbage burner”) has been controversial for many years from a pollution and health safety perspective. Closure is scheduled for the end of 2027, with a full shut down at the end of 2033.
The closure resolution is attached.
