Minnesota Lynx Celebrate 25th Season With North Loop Mural

As part of their weekend-long celebration of their 25th season, the Minnesota Lynx commissioned artist Simone Alexa to paint a giant mural near the entrance to Modist Brewing in the North Loop. And it’s a challenging project to pull off.

“It’s all spray paint and there’s a lot of text and so free-handing all of that is not the easiest thing in the world,” Simone said. “But I think it’s turning out really well and I’m very happy with it.”

The mural honors the Lynx’s four league championships with the words “The WNBA’s gold standard since ’99. Can’t tame us.”

For Simone, it was a thrill to be selected.

“Several artists were being looked at but they wanted to select an artist that was Black, that identified as LGBTQIA and was a woman and I fit all of those boxes,” she said. “Also because… I think I’m talented!” she said with a laugh. “I’m always happy just to be painting. I’m one of the luckiest people in the world that I get to just paint for my career.”

The team is celebrating the 25th anniversary at tonight’s (June 9th) game and the jersey retirement of Lynx legend Sylvia Fowles on Sunday, June 11th.
