Metro – I-394 and Third Avenue in Minneapolis: 2023 construction

line

Plan ahead! Construction on I-394 ramps and North 3rd Avenue begins April 10

Construction on the I-394 ramps to and from Washington Ave. and N. 3rd Ave. in Minneapolis is starting soon! Continue reading to see upcoming road and ramp closures.

I-394 on/off ramps and North 3rd Avenue closure

Beginning Mon, April 10, crews will close the ramps to and from I-394 and Washington Ave. in downtown Minneapolis through late June. North 3rd Ave. between Washington Ave. and the C parking ramp will also be closed. These closures are necessary so crews can begin work to redesign the intersection and rebuild the ramps.

If you use I-394 to get to and from downtown Minneapolis, you can use these detours:

  • Eastbound I-394 to downtown Minneapolis: Use the North 4th Ave. ramp to North 2nd Ave. to Washington Ave.
  • Downtown Minneapolis to westbound I-394: Use Washington Ave. to 1st Ave. to 7th St. to Twins Way

Access to C parking ramp

3rd Ave. from North 5th St. up to the construction area will temporarily become a two-way road to maintain access to the C parking ramp. If you need to park in the ramp, you can use Washington Ave. to North 5th Ave. to North 5th St. as a detour.

Please note that timeframes are all approximate, subject to change and weather and schedule permitting.

More about this project

We are redesigning the intersection at Washington Ave. and North 3rd Ave. in Minneapolis, adding a left turn lane to Washington Ave. from I-394, and rebuilding the ramps to and from I-394. We are also replacing the signal system at the intersection of I-394/Washington Ave. The intersection has a history of safety issues for pedestrians, and motorists that turn left at this intersection from Washington Ave. on to I-394.

For more information, including upcoming traffic impacts, visit the I-394 and Third Ave. webpage. If you have any questions about the project, contact the project team.

MnDOT invites and encourages participation by all.
