Splashy New Modist Event Space Getting Close To Opening

Modist Brewing is just a couple weeks away from opening its colorful new two-story event space that’s unlike any the North Loop has ever seen.

“I think people who are used to booking your traditional hotel banquet room or whatever will really appreciate that this is a unique layout, unique ambience,” said co-owner Dan Wellendorf. “You’ll be able to see the brewery production, you’re overlooking the North Loop, it’s pretty cool.”

Overhead is a 20-foot lighted M, the Modist logo, that can change colors and become part of the event’s light show.

Many of the walls have been painted by the same artist whose work is on display in the taproom as well as on some of Modist’s beer labels, Wes Winship.

“It’s just colorful, I mean I think we coined the term ‘punk rock chic,’ said Wellendorf. “Kind of ‘in your face’ but still clean and modern.”

The space can hold as many as 120 guests and Wellendorf expects to attract everything from corporate parties to wedding celebrations. On the ground level is a bar with eight tap lines that can serve Modist’s beer and THC drinks.

“We’ll have our mainstay beers, we’ll offer THC when people want it and then people are always welcome to bring in a caterer,” said Wellendorf. “So if you want something that Modist doesn’t carry, if it’s spirit-based, it would have to be run through a caterer.”

Before construction began, Modist had been using this space for employee offices and a lab. Those have now been upgraded in a different part of the building.

The company hopes to launch its booking platform in mid-to late November, just in time for holiday parties.
