Mural Project Underway Around Farmers Market

We’re starting to see the first of a series of colorful murals go up around the Minneapolis Farmers Market, created by young artists from Juxtaposition Arts in north Minneapolis, and funded by several community partners. The project, Mural at the Market, was conceived and realized as part of the Root District vision to bring vibrancy and attract new potential to the area.

One of the artists, Bereket Adamu, 18, has done murals on the sides of businesses before, but said this project is special because it’s for the general public to enjoy. “It’s truly a public space,” she said, “so I was like, hands down, the most excited for this project.”

Fittingly, for the Farmers Market, this first mural features images of farm produce as well as urban structures. “I think this area has always had kind of like this push and pull between being like an agricultural space and living space,” Bereket said. “So I think what the actual initiative is is to show how they can both co-exist together.”

Bereket is joined on the project by artists Essence Enwere, Isaiah Hunter and Ashley Mary.

We’d like to thank our project funders and supporters NuLoop Partners, Minneapolis Downtown Council, MN Ballpark Authority, North Loop Neighborhood Association, Neighbors For North Loop Livability, United Properties, and Great River Energy.

Additional murals will be painted live on weekends throughout the summer. Check the North Loop Neighborhood Association website and Instagram for ongoing updates.
