Two North Loop Restaurateurs Up For Prestigious James Beard Awards

This year’s winners of the most highly-coveted awards in the restaurant and hospitality industries, the James Beard Awards, will be announced in the coming months. But we already know that two North Loop restaurateurs are among the semifinalists.

Spoon and Stable, from Chef Gavin Kaysen is a national semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurant. Kaysen himself is a past James Beard winner for Rising Star in 2008 and Best Chef Midwest in 2018.

“It’s incredible to see how important Minneapolis has become to the national food scene,” Kaysen told the Star Tribune.

Meanwhile, Chef Shigeyuki Furukawa of Kado no Mise is nominated in the Best Chef: Midwest category.

“Our name is still not well known,” Furukawa told the Star Tribune. “So, I would like to take this opportunity to spread the word about Japanese food culture.”

In all, eleven Twin Cities restaurants were named semifinalists in the national and regional categories, which is a record.
