Unleashed Hounds and Hops Among Best Dog Bars in the USA
North Loop dog bar Unleashed Hounds and Hops just made USA Today’s Top Ten list of Best Dog Bars in America. For the second consecutive year, Unleashed came in at Number 6.
“I’m just extremely honored because we’re just a small business in Minnesota, and to get a national recognition from USA Today just makes me really, really happy,” said Jami Berkness, Unleashed’s CEO and owner.

USA Today describes dog bars as “unique establishments [which] offer a space where dogs can mingle and play, while their owners relax and enjoy a drink.”
Jen Clement was thrilled to learn about the honor. “They deserve it!” Her dog, Desmond, is a 14-month-old energetic Doberman. “I’m a regular here. And I’m not a regular anywhere. It’s just nice to come here and know I can name the staff and at least 50 percent of the people here right now.”

Humans can bring their dogs to Unleashed on a walk-in basis and purchase a day pass, but Berkness says most guests end up being annual members. Proof of vaccinations is required, as is following Unleashed’s rules for good behavior.
“Being a dog park bar and restaurant is really unique. And people love their dogs. But what Unleashed does that’s really special is this community. Our employees and our annual members, they’re becoming like family.”
Berkness isn’t sure how she made the list again. USA Today explains that establishments are “nominated by an expert panel and voted by readers as the best in the U.S.” Berkness is grateful for guests and members who cast their votes for Unleashed.
“I love the diversity of the people. Everybody, no matter what race, sexual orientation, how much money someone makes, that’s what I love about Unleashed,” said Berkness. “That we can actually bring all those people here and then build such a community of people who then become friends.”
