Become An Informed Voter: Attend Our Forums

With the crucial Minneapolis city elections fast approaching, the North Loop Neighborhood Association is joining forces with the Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association to help our voters be as informed as possible before heading to the polls.

Every city council member’s seat will be on the ballot. (Most of the North Loop is in Ward 3, although a section of the neighborhood, the northwest corner, is in Ward 5).

Voters will also decide the next mayor, Park Board commissioners and a proposed amendment to the city charter that could dramatically change the way public safety is handled in Minneapolis, as well as another proposed amendment that could change the mayor’s powers within city government.

The NLNA and DMNA are hosting two online forums on the charter amendments, with both sides laying out their case for each issue. On Tuesday, August 24th at 7pm, you can join the Zoom discussion about the city’s governing structure, by registering here.

On Wednesday, August 25th at 7pm, you can join the Zoom discussion about the public safety amendment by registering here.

And on Monday, September 13th, we’re inviting the candidates for Ward 3 city council member: Steve Fletcher, Michael Rainville, Merv Moorhead and Hope Hennessey to take part in a debate via Zoom from 5:30-6:30pm. This was originally scheduled to be in-person at Modist Brewing, but because of Covid concerns, it is being moved online. Check back for a Zoom link as we get closer.

“Local elections are always important, but especially so this year,” said Bri Sharkey-Smith of the North Loop Neighborhood Association. “These ballot initiatives will shape the future of our city, and who we elect this fall will help guide and enact how those changes are implemented — which makes these 2021 elections crucial. I’m so excited that we’re hosting these educational forums for our residents, and I’m so glad we were able to partner with the Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association to bring them about.”
